Thailand Cave Rescue and aftermath

The longer I see this in the news since they were rescued the more something feels wrong about this. It has this distinct feeling to me that this whole event serves as a type of "reality entertainment" to people as much as something real. Maybe that's just me being cynical, but... If people were just hoping for a rescue and wanting to help, why would anyone give a fuck about such minute details like this? It seems to me exactly like the kind of behavior you seem displayed for things like celebrity weddings.

I posted the article about sedation because we were speaking about it. Its relevant here. :\

I think people are interested in these things for a number of reasons, with vicarious thrill being a part. . . The odds were against them and humans love an underdog, and this is probably why there is still attention being paid to this.

Humans love a "disaster averted" story and this definitely falls into that category. No different than the way Americans cheered when rescue workers were pulling people alive out from their cars under the collapsed section of the Interstate 880 viaduct after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake (and I do remember the TV movies about that). Or when actor Edward James Olmos started pushing a broom down the streets of South Central Los Angeles to get people to stop the looting and arson and start cleaning up the streets after the 1992 Rodney King trial riots. Or when heroic cops and firefighters managed to get the World Trade Center nearly cleared (still about 2,000 people died at the WTC but that number is low compared to the daytime population of the WTC would have been). Or how a plane full of ordinary people fought back and prevented a plane from crashing into the US Capitol or White House.

I hated musk before, but he's really showing the world what an absolute cunt he is.
What a fucking prick, that is so irresponsibly defamatory.

The Aussie diver is indeed a legend and his dads death at the same time is huge blow, they delayed telling him and thats prob for the best really.

I'm disappointed. I'm kind of hoping that's just someone other than Musk trolling his account. Anyone with the least understanding of cave diving would understand why that sub wouldn't work. And even if he did believe it would work, I'm disappointed anyone would take such a low road and use such language. Musk is such a visionary in other ways, particularly with what he's doing with SpaceX.

Elon Musk apologises for calling Thai cave rescuer a 'pedo'

Yeah yeah, I know everyone is sick of those fucking kids, but this story is just sort of weird :?

Elon Musk apologises for calling Thai cave rescuer a 'pedo'

Tesla billionaire says his remarks about Briton Vernon Unsworth were unjustified

The tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has apologised to a Briton who helped to rescue a group of boys and their football coach from a cave in Thailand last week, after calling him a ?pedo? on Twitter.

Vernon Unsworth had said he was considering legal action and was ?astonished and very angry? about the slur.

Musk this week deleted the offending tweet, which was made after Unsworth questioned the usefulness of a mini-submarine Musk was offering to help the rescue. He also deleted a subsequent comment in which he said: ?Bet ya a signed dollar it?s true.?

On Wednesday, Musk issued an apology to Unsworth in a reply to another Twitter user. He said: ?My words were spoken in anger after Mr Unsworth said several untruths & suggested I engage in a sexual act with the mini-sub, which had been built as an act of kindness & according to specifications from the dive team leader.?

He added: ?Nonetheless, his actions against me do not justify my actions against him, and for that I apologize to Mr Unsworth and to the companies I represent as leader. The fault is mine and mine alone.?

Unsworth told Reuters he was aware of Musk?s apology but refused to comment about a possible settlement or legal action.

-Read on.

So the guy questioned the usefulness of a mini-sub Musk created, and for some reason he was so offended that he publicly called the guy a pedophile? Jesus. Short fuse much?

Unsworth's exact words were (I told him to) "stick his sub where it hurts".

I hope Unsworth sues Musk for millions.

Musk only offered this incredibly half-assed apology after investors told him to on pain of withdrawal of investment.

Musk is a first grade cunt.

Incidentally, why is this a separate thread when it is continuing a point made in the Thai cave boys thread?

It's sad that despite all the effort and genius Elon Musk has brought to humanity he will be remembered for this angry moment and poor reaction. It's the hard part of being wealthy, things poor people can do all day long, like call you a cunt, you can never stoop too or your a piece of shit.

We expect such perfect public polished images from leaders yet when I look at Americas leader I see Donald. In truth people are not polished and some of the greatest men of history were horrible as humans. Over the last 100 years we invented better recording of history. The result is we are far harder on our leadership's personal lives, don't be a politician or public figure unless you are as calm as Budda and loving as Jesus. Sanitized back stories are more common then people who admit they are human and have done truly shitty things. Even more important is they will still do shitty things in their future, sometimes I think we expect all leadership to be godlike and perfect and as a result the best leaders never step up to the plate because they see they are not.

I don't know Elon Musk and have rarely defended a wealthy person, but I don't believe wealth makes you more accountable, I often just look at what people are doing with their wealth and most important to me is why did they accumulate it to begin with. We all play this monopoly game in our lives and it seems when some are winning others just hate them more and expect them to be better humans when the truth is to win at this game financially others must lose and the very act of being wealthy causes poverty elsewhere. Honestly I feel sorry for wealthy people, they spend half their lives defending their right to have what they do.

I think his genius is wildly overstated (because of his wealth, perhaps?)

He strikes me as an egotist, more than a visionary. Much of what he does seems to be "greenwashing" - selling an idea or a product as "sustainable"....then burning up obscene amounts of rocket fuel for his vanity project.
Granted, i'm cynical as fuck, but a friend of mine worked for tesla for a year or so, and quit in disgust last week.
I don't think musk is really worthy of carrying the tesla name - to me he seems more like an aggressive capitalist more than a visionary.
Undortunately in our culture, success is often judged by wealth - rather than anything that affects true positive change in the world.

Admittedly though, i do just hate rich assholes :)

It's a sad fact of life that being an 'asshole' is a prerequisite for being rich. No-one gets rich (from business) without being an asshole. Some people such as musicians or sportspersons can get very rich before they have chance to become assholes, but it never takes them long to catch up...

I disagree. I mean, I certainly agree that being an asshole helps with getting rich. And there's probably a disproportionate number of assholes among the wealthy. But there are non asshole rich people too.

Just like there are a lot of assholes in total poverty. :) Humans are pretty diverse.

Agreed. There are lots of shitty people in any socioeconomic strata. Perhaps a higher per capita in the wealthy, but I have known plenty of wealthy people who are great people, too. Sometimes you either are given opportunity or you make opportunity for yourself, pursue higher education with the goal of getting a high-paying job to have a more comfortable life for yourself and your family, and you get that, make a hefty salary, do your thing, and have wealth, too.
