Does anyone have experience testing the exact purity of heroin samples? This new friend of mine who majors in some chemistry-related field has access to equipment at his school where he has suppposedly measured the purity level of two different Mexican heroin samples he procurred. The first, traditional black tar type stuff, came back at around 42 % pure, while this newer, "brown powder, but still from Mexico" dope came back at around 62%! I think that can be considered to be relatively good Mexican dope, no?
So does anyone have experience using this type of equipment on their own time, which my friend says involves a laser somehow analyzing the sample for diacetylmorphine aka heroin. Or if anyone has any sort of experience or knowledge regarding any process used to measure the purity of dope?

Good post......who needs microgram now when we have smart users that post purity who I have respect for because they aren't the DEA

And look like the mexicans are stepping into this century in the biological arms race i like to call heroin

I think your friend may use an electron microscope.

The one that I have experience with is the:

•JEOL 7400 High Resolution Field Emission Electron Microscope

I used it for mineral science, but is has applications with analyzing phamaceuticals.

Use the site search engine, I and others have heavily posted on this subject over the years. The simplest method is a Melting Point Assay which will give you the approximate overall purity but not the constiuency breakdown. For that you have to gas it.

I did analyze various drugs purity, well, it's not synthesis directly but definitely quantitative analysis (for testing purity) and qualitative analysis (for testing what's in a sample), those need reagents to carry out characteristic reactions.
