Teen Angst Poetry

Usually teens start writing poetry (usually girls) around the age of 13-15. They discover poetry can be an outlet for those inner most emotions of pain they attain from parents, boyfriends, and social conflicts in their lives. It usually starts with fixed rhyme emotional speeches to the person they hate, then it moves to free verse poetry about anything and everything they feel a horrible dread, or "angst" about.

Why is it bad?

It's not bad. It's good for teens to have an outlet or coping device for their depressions and anxieties. The problem comes in that they write so much and want to share it. They usually have quite an ego about their ability to reflect their "powerful" emotions through their writings. Any recommendations for improvements are taken with emotion and usually they are very very reluctant to read classic poetry or the poetry of other amateurs.

Publication

Teen angst poetry is not publication quality. It is a horribly common venting tool. If you want publication, you have to stand out from the depressed sulking majority. That's not to say anything with a depressed theme is bad. See the characteristics to compare with your own work.

There is no point in having a dog and blowing your own trumpet, but I think this should be a sticky, easpecially since 90%+ of the stuff in Words falls into this trap. Are we just throwing prose about, or do we want to improve our art?

There is nothing wrong with posting anything here, despite the quality. The majority of writers do it for themselves and never get published. It depends on the reason a person writes... I write not only for its cathartic properties, but I also am inclined toward it as a high art. Improvement, pushing my mind to do its best in form and in content is one of my personal goals. But not everyone has the same reasons.

I post my writing at a few forums just to get it out there because it is something I love doing. I consider myself to be a pretty good writer, but I'm not at the level where I could be published I don't think.. but that's not ever been my goal. You can try to hone your craft without any other motivations like publication.

Well, since the the mods agree that it's just a place to throw prose, I will stop.

you as well as others have the right to post what you will within the guidelines. It is one thing to preach or write to gain a perspective on the subtle levels of language and another to emotively express oneselves through words. there is room enough for both. words forum on bl has never pretended to be anything other than what it was. If you are searching for serious literary critic perhaps join a forum of poets instead of expressive individuals

Is throwing prose any worse than throwing poems?

Wow.

You make 19 posts in a week and suddenly think you have the right to make posts like this? Bluelight is a harm minimisation site. This is not a site for professional writers looking to improve their craft. This is for anyone and everyone to post whatever they feel like, whether it be good or not so good. People write for many different reasons and they deserve to have somewhere to post their words.

I just hope that noone reads your extremely condescending post and is then hesitant to post their own work.
