Teen sex, drugs link to bedroom TVs
By Cara Jenkin, The Advertiser (AU)
March 28, 2005

TEENAGERS who have a television in their bedroom are more likely to use marijuana, smoke, binge drink and have sex, a study has found.
The increased and unsupervised exposure to risk-taking behaviour shown in the media is blamed for the trend, picked up in the US study by the University of California and published in medical journal Australian Doctor.

The reduced interaction with parents caused when some used the TV as a `baby-sitter' was also found to have contributed.

The survey of more than 1000 adolescents between 12 and 16 years of age revealed half had a TV in their bedroom and watched more hours of TV than those without.

Parents of teenagers with a television in their bedroom were also less likely to know how, where and with whom they spent after-school hours.

Child and Youth Health Youth Help Line and Parent Help Line manager Bernice Gray agreed with researchers that teenagers were more vulnerable to adopting similar behaviour when they had direct access to a television.

She said while all family members need their own space to relax, too much unsupervised television can lead to young people taking part in risky behaviour.

"Often a parent may not be comfortable talking about sexual activity or smoking and it is important for parents to get that conversation going and encourage young people to express their thoughts and concerns," she said.

"It depends on how often they watch private TV and it is a timely reminder for parents, not to monitor what they are watching, but keep a watching brief and ask questions and be involved."

She suggested parents keep an evening free for the whole family to spend time together to talk about issues or just catch up with everyone else's lives.

Hayley Bell, 20, of Surrey Downs in Adeliade, had a TV in her bedroom all through high school and said she does not believe it affected her behaviour.

"I probably watched more TV in the family room with the family than in my room," she said.

"We are a pretty close family and generally had all our meals together, so we interacted with each other in that way and have kept that up."

That's funny. Cuase only the most financially sucessful and social sound people in the drug groups i hang in generally have a TV in their room. I'm not kidding. I've had a tv in my room a couple times for a few months when i was a little kid. This is bullshit.

The article shold've been titled

"Teens with TV's have more fun"
:)

This is total bullshit. If television had any effect what so ever on a childs inclination to do drugs or have sex, then why isnt the massive amount of anti-drug propaganda causing a decrease in drug use? I see way more anti-drug advertisements and anti-drug material in the content of various television programs than that of "pro-drug" content.

My parents NEVER let me have a tv in my room, and I had a ton of sex/binge drinking and drugs in high school. I think it has more to do with the kind of parents that want their kids spending more time with the family than the actual tv and the media.

Yeah I never had a TV in my room and that never stopped me from getting fucked and fucked up.

I was never allowed to have a TV in my room. Or eat sugary cereal.

This did not prevent me from sneaking out on a regular basis and moving my way up the drug ladder until becoming a heroin addict and casual crack smoker.

I also had a ton of sex during high school, as well. Really, at 26, I couldn't even handle getting laid half that much these days.

I had a TV in my room until I was about 15. Though I didnt start fucking til I was 16 or doing drugs until I was 19.

Where are they getting these figures? 8)

All drug users have also consummed milk at one or more times in their life.

This can be statistically proven.

Everyone else naysaying this should pay attention too.

If you read the study closely (which it appears many of you haven't) you'll see that it mentions parenting methods. This is the key. It's not that the TV is having an effect on the kids, but that their complete lack of parental involvement is negatively affecting them. They're learning all their lessons from the TV instead of mom and dad. If your parents never explained to you that using drugs was wrong or that sex at a young age was dangerous etc etc etc, don't you think you'd be more likely to try both without hesitation?

Many parents today use the TV as a babysitter, and even worse, a surrogate parent. Think about what a child will act like when their only social and moral role models come from sitcoms and cartoons. They have no sense of what is right and wrong in the real world. They are bombarded with overly sexualized teenagers, graphic violence, rampant discrimination and stereotypes, and worst of all, no *one* moral compass to help them make better decisions. It's been proven over and over again that kids with under-involved parents have drastically higher rates of drug use, unsafe sex/pregnancy, criminal behavior, and a whole slew of other socially destructive tendencies. This is being compounded by the fact that they are being endlessly manipulated by the messages on television.

The television is not the problem, it's just making the problem worse.

What link!? There is no link besides the statistical data showing positive correlations between TV ownership and, what I call, "Having fun," and the other variables are such an incredibly huge factor that this renders the study completely moot.

Honest to fuck.
