Teacher stabbed himself to death while high on magic mushrooms

A teacher repeatedly stabbed himself in the neck with a broken bottle while high on magic mushrooms, an inquest heard.

Simon Packham, 27, had taken about 20 of the hallucinogenic mushrooms before disappearing on December 10 last year while living in Colombia.

He returned to the hostel where he was staying and when friends found him at around 9.30pm he became agitated, smashing a bottle and stabbing himself over and over, causing fatal injuries.

Packham, from Hackbridge, south west London, arrived in Bogota on August 10 last year to teach English as a foreign language.

He was a recreational drug user and toxicology reports also later found traces of cocaine and marijuana in his body.

Coroner's officer, Mrs Sharon Marshall, said: "Reports received from Colombian police say that on the 10th December 2007 between 5pm and 6pm Simon Packham was with his friend Katerina Lucia in her flat where she witnessed him consume 20 mushrooms known to have a hallucinogenic affect.

"Mrs Lucia witnessed Simon Packham eat these and remain for a couple of hours before becoming incoherent. He fell asleep for half an hour before he woke up and left."

She continued: "She found Simon Packham at about 9.30pm at his hostel where other residents had noticed a change in his behaviour.

"His friends tried to talk to him but Simon Packham walked to the other end of the building before his friends heard shattering of broken glass. She rushed over and saw Simon Packham brandishing a broken bottle in his hand.

"The friend shouted for him to put the bottle down but Simon Packham started jamming it in his neck."

Packham, who was described as a keen kickboxer and sportsman with many friends, had been due to fly home for Christmas just nine days after he died.

Mrs Marshall added: "Simon Packham has been described as a happy-go-lucky person who liked to travel. Whilst travelling he would teach English as a second language.

"He enjoyed kickboxing, running and sports. It is known he was a recreational user of cannabis, cocaine and ecstasy."

Recording a verdict of death by misadventure, Coroner Dr Paul Knapman, said: "It is perfectly clear he has died from haemorrhagic shock due to inflicted injuries to his neck. It is also perfectly clear that when he did so he was not himself he was under the influence of drugs so it can't be said this is a true suicide.

"He was clearly under the influence of these mushrooms and the problem was made worse by marijuana and cocaine. For that reason I am going to say this is a case of misadventure."

After the hearing at Westminster Coroner's Court, Simon's father, said he lived for travelling and teaching and was close to his family which includes one brother and three sisters.

Robert Packham, 57, a retired electrician, said the tragedy should act as a warning to other young travellers.

he fell asleep first? maybe they are Amanitas? it doesnt really clarify in the text:

was with his friend Katerina Lucia in her flat where she witnessed him consume 20 mushrooms known to have a hallucinogenic affect.

Something fishy here. There's a concoction called Burundanga in Colombia, supposedly a Datura extract. In any event, an atropine/scopolamine-containing mixture that would induce the kind of delirium that might lead to self-harm.

From the report he seemed like an experienced drug user. Something untold definitely happened.

Yeah, my first reaction was this guy had other problems if he decided to do that on psilocybin mushrooms ~ I agree with a possible Datura link, as that wouldn't be looked for in toxicology and has been the most unpredictable hallucinogen I've ever witnessed.
But basically, yeah. What did he ingest exactly and what is his mental health history?

Misadventure?! ...where's that Patrick Stewart pic...

Not experienced with psychedelics though?? Doesn't specify that in the text.

It does seem suspiscious though doesn't it...

Poor guy!! And those poor people who witnessed it! Very disturbing indeed...

ever feel like that when not on mushrooms?

now that I think about it, maybe he was withdrawing from the coke too or something. I have felt like that when coming down off a binge.

Maybe he just killed himself on mushrooms. I've seen all sorts of psychotic reactions from them.

well he was whitnessed for a few hours, then fell asleep. that would be liek a total of 4-6 hours passed the mushrooms wouldnt be anywhere enar peak then. prob clsoer to baseline then intoxicated.

~Maybe he stayed up all night on coke, ate some mushrooms, passed out, woke up feeling the effects of his brain drained of dopamine, and the comedown of an intense shroom trip (which he slept through only because he was freakin' exhausted) and add that to any propensity towards depression/psychosis, and you've got a suicide!
Not to mention being in a country raped by your home country because of the war on drugs, and its general foreign policy, and I cant blame the guy.:\

Yeah, I find it hard to believe that these are mushrooms with psylocibin. That datura llink sounds pretty fascinating though. wish theyd look further int that

I doubt that they will. It kind of seems like they are done with it. Mabye someone should covertly exhume him and run tests...hmm

why does everyone seem to doubt that this is true? dude probably had a bad trip and wigged out. seems possible to me.

because of the holes

eg, at T+4-6 hours you arent really tripping
eg, he fell asleep
eg, other drugs involved, but the article is so vague about them
eg, this doesnt tend to happen on shroomies

^ It works out to be about 3.5 - 4 hours after ingestion.
He coulda just blacked out.
Yeah he had blatently been smokin draw and sniffin coke
High doses of shrooms put alot of people into psychosis. 1 friend tried vforcing herself through a metal fence by repeatedly trying to throw herself threw it. She also tried to jump in front of cars. Another friend was close to throwing herself out of a window onto a glass conservatory on the same night.

Don't underestimate the power of psilocin (nd then add that to a paranoid coke / bud high)..

A toxicology test would look for all chemicals and drugs Atropine would show up

It does seem possible he was unprepared for what he did and killed himself... Psilocybin or not
