Survival Horror Games

Manhunt.

Manhunt 2.

:D

Everything good about the Silent Hill series has already been said. The first Silent Hill is my favorite, and it still remains the only game to truly ever give me the creeps with the lights out.

I played the first Manhunt and thought it was awsome. Was disapointed that the sequel did not come out on X-Box

There was a game that came out around the launch of the Gamecube called Eternal Darkness.
I would love to replay that game...it was stellar.
I will never forget the level that you play that you are literally decaying as time progresses.
But the first Resident Evil would have to be my favorite. Nothing like throwing a controller across the room and screaming because a dog jumps through a window on a video game and you were not expecting it...

^ Eternal Darkness was brilliant. I finished it 3 times.

I never played any of the Resident Evil games on playstation but I bought and loved them all on the GameCube.

I've been enjoying a game called Obscure II on Wii. It's not the best game in existence but it's 2 played co-op which makes it fun.

Pretty awkward camera and shit though.

I'm one of those people that buys way more games than I ever have time to play. There's a few of games I bought and sold without ever playing a minute of because they were so far down the "to do" list, I knew I was never going to get to them.
Anyway, I owned Eternal Darkness for a good 5 years before I sat down a few months ago to play it.
Is it a good game? Meh, it's OK.
However, it is very innovative in a lot of ways and will try to fuck with you in ways no other game has ever fucked with you. Like when your screen will go black and display the green "Video" in the corner to make you think your gamecube suddenly malfunctioned.
I didn't get very far into the game. Somewhere in (I think) Karim's mission, I got to a boss I couldn't beat and gave up.

That game is fucking hard!!!! The words that come up on the screen are fucking tiny, the people are dumb as fuck, and I lost my glasses

Well, it IS hard at first. BUT. It's saving grace is that it lets you start over from the beginning while keeping the same level. I played through the first day 3 or four times.
I got up to about level 12 before I decided to play it for real and after that, it's not bad. Once you get the small chainsaws off the clown (don't forget to triple book it), then the game is really a breeze. You can kill bosses with about 3-4 hits with the small chainsaw.
I agree that the AI of the NPC's is pretty low. But saving the survivors is optional. Don't stress out too much with them. If you got the time, get them but don't stress out about getting all of them.

Yeah, the small text is annoying. The game was designed for a widescreen HD. It looks fine on my dad's $4K HDTV but on mine, I had to sit, like, 3 feet from the screen to read it.

why hasn't anyone mentioned Bioshock or its predecessor System Shock 2? They are admittedly a bit RPG-ish, but definitely fit into survival horror in my opinion. theyre all about those two things - surviving and being scared the whole time (of monsters, naturally)

I downloaded the demo for "Siren: Blood Curse" on PSN the other day and it seemed pretty legit. I want the full game, but it's $40.00 and that's a lot for a downloadable game in my opinion. The atmosphere reminds me of the first Resident Evil and kind of Silent Hill too. Seems like a cool game; pity I'll have to wait until I'm drunk enough to think it's a good idea to pony up the cash to really find out.

I agree! I manhunt was the shit. They should have made a 360 version of manhunt II.

I love all the silent hill games. Looking forward to the new one whenever it comes out!

Anyone every play Clive Barker's "Undying"? I thought it was pretty spooky.

Sorry to drag this oldie back from the dead... but whatever, look at the title of the thread it seems so appropriate. Anyhow. I saw someone mention Condemned 2:Bloodshot a few pages back then nothing else, so I thought I'd re mention it. This game was pretty bad-ass. I've not played the original however so I can't make any sort of comparison. It combines survival horror elements w/ some "detective work" type puzzles as well. The plot is as follows,

Condemned 2: Bloodshot takes place 11 months after Condemned: Criminal Origins. The game features a darker, grungier Ethan Thomas, whose life has descended into alcoholism and homelessness following the events of the first game. The game's plot features Ethan being recruited back into the SCU to investigate a call for help from his old mentor Malcolm Vanhorn, and delves more deeply into explaining the mysterious phenomena causing city-wide violence and mass hysteria.

It is definitely not scary in the way that Silent Hill is that is for sure (but really what is, Silent Hill is a masterpiece of it's genre) but I think it finds it's place in the survival horror niche pretty well and is more then entertaining. Plus you get the opportunity to blow up meth labs, and beat people with toilet seats if that's your bag (it certainly was mine). I liked this game just a bit if you couldn't tell, and I actually did find it had replay value on top of it.

you all need to wait till Left 4 Dead!!!

Absolutely amazing! The game changes every time you play it. An enemy won't be in the same place he was before. The game will adjust to how your doing. If bad, it'll give you ammo or health, if good, then it'll throw more enemies at you.

The multiplayer aspect is stressed in this game more than alot of others. You have to stick together and help each other out otherwise it'll fuck you in the end.

just finished Dead Space. that game had its freaky moments. not in a jump-out-and-scare-you way but in a mind-fuck kind of way. i was hesitant at first, it being an EA game and all, but it actually turned out to be a really good game. kinda like bio-shock meets resident evil

Eternal Darkness was great. The way it just fucked with your mind.

Awesome. :)

I think that the Silent Hill series has the greatest games because of their music, poignant
characters, and symbolism. Never knew before that a game could create such strong feelings of despair and dread... The silent hill world is very compelling in a dark way.
