Substrates and concentration/metabolism

This might belong in the ADD forms, but I have a question about substrates. If two substrates of the same enzyme are coadministered, (regardless of whether either inhibits or induces that enzyme), what is the effect on the rate of metabolism of those two substrates (substances)? I would assume they would "compete" for the enzyme's attention -- thus possibly causing an overdose or some sort of harm, but I am not sure if I got the mechanism reversed. Could someone help out? I was prescribed new meds and just want to be extra cautious.

If the total amount of drugs administered does not exceed the maximum load that the enzyme can convert then the metabolism of neither substance will increase or decrease to an appreciable extent. If the drugs to "overload" the enzyme then the metabolism of the drugs would be slowed, but this rarely happens in real world scenarios as the amount of substrate required to do so is quite high. However, if one of these drugs does inhibit/induce a enzyme that either drug is dependent on it could lead to an overdose.

It depends on the drugs in question and the doses. With some drugs there is no interaction, with others they might compate for metabolism but only at very high doses, with other compounds one may inhibit the other's metabolism, and so on... In most situations you should discuss any drug interactions with your doctor, or more preferably a pharmacist - that's what they are there for and are more than happy to help.
