Well picture addiction as, well yeah, a road to be traveled--with all your environmental influences like peers, teachers, the media, goofy D.A.R.E programs, etc.

Then the stinky, top-heavy, rusted, stained-carpeted, ashtray-full-of-cigarette-butts car with the Todd Rundgren 8-tracks in the backseat is your genetic makeup.

And curiosity is the ignition key.

Naw I know curiosity doesn't get people addicted. But it sure as hell is what gets 'em started on their path to addiction.
Plus the study never said anything about addiction, just about avoiding drugs and alcohol altogether. :)
