Street Junkies/ Drinkers tell yeer story

Charlie clean w.r.t. satellite estates vs the vagabond existence-

Dalrymple knew about that. Free to Choose, mid 1990s. He explains why offering people a place to stay won't work and "furnishing" grants are more likely to be spent on street corners and in 24/7 off licenses with the three-litre bottles than in Homebase or Currys. Bureaucrats as usual don't listen.

Everyday i see friends that i used to get about with begging on a certain pitch .

One of these is a female n she is pretty n intelligent .
She wasn't on the pitch today but another friend of mine was.
I stopped for a chat with the nagging thought that i was taking up some peek begging time this was made better when he got a £2 drop whist i was their.

Anyway this is not the point here.
The point of this post for me is
How the fuk do you start to integrate yer self back in to society when you have been so far removed from it for such along time ?
About 14 months ago i made a decision that i wasn't going to live the same lifestyle that i had been for the past 15 years .
I don't feel much happier than i did when i was out their. If at all .

They may seem like silly questions but:

How prevalent is violence when living on the streets? Were you not scared about the prospect of violence?

How on earth did you cope with the cold temperatures?

Only spent mercifully brief periods actually sleeping rough stylee properly homeless and never did the Big Issue thing. Mucho time spent outstaying my welcome on various folks' sofas, dodgy bedsits, even dodgier shared houses before abruptly being no longer welcome and off a-wandering again and the like. Other than that I suspect I may be Brimz in a past life...

Becoming properly, mid-winter freezing, park bench dwelling for the first time was wot got the ball rolling. As it were. The really big, really hard to shake off ball anyway. Fuckin' freezin' out there sometimes - how's a boy to kip sans scag? :\

I haven t read the whole thread so apologies if e are covering old ground but what are peoples opinion on giving to the homeless, I so often see in London sitting or wrapped up in a blanket. I always try and drop them a couple of quid on thew basis that of they are clucking on a bag the its what they really need or do others think that's just enabling and I should offer to go buy them food.

I thing the latter is a little condescending, if they want to use the cash to but food or a hot drink they can if they need drugs then I don't have a problem with that at all.

Views ?

I've always felt that too. Would be pretty hypocritical of most people (inc "non-drug takers" who like to get blind drunk of a weekend) to get judgemental about it. Withholding a few quid isn't going to help someone come off the gear either..

Thanks all, I usually give to at least 1 everytime I travel to London, which is only a couple of times a month its small change to me, I mean I spend over £2 on a coffee at St Pancras FFS.

I just happened to have mentioned the issue, not my giving to someone else who said that if they gave at all they would offer to but them food or a drink. In many ways its still a kindness and done with the best of intentions so I'm no looking to knock people for doing that, just cash seems a better option.

I'll carry on as I already thought best, I don't give to professional beggars though, I had a friend of a friend who used to take her ill treated toddlers up to Victiroria and set the begging, she had a house and money already and didn't even have a habit to feed, was just a greedy heartless cow. She doesn't have th kids anymore they got taken into car poor little'uns. You can spot those ones a mile off

^^^

Cheap publicity stunt IMO, most would just head straight for the nearest Maccy d's than deal with a homeless person

Remember years back you used to get the juicers standing outside offys tapping. Seems to be a dying art these days. Always gave them my change or a can or two. Done a fair bit of street drinking myself (still do) and it surprises me how clued up some down and outs are. Had a few cracking times yarning away with some. About politics of all things! Think the whole DLA/Benefits thing has changed things some what. Over here anyway for sure. Not as much need to tap any more.

I got asked for a fag & 40p (by separate people) during a 5 minute walk in Glasgow city centre the other day. It's definitely not a dying art round here lol.

Similar round here at the city centre, when mephedrone was legal it was just full of wiped out people trying to tap up money for more haha.

Its all changed now. Don't think your even allowed to stand out side the offy now never mind sleep there. Every offy had a character or two. Used to be one called crazy horse that stood at the top of Castle St in Belfast. Long gone now though... mad bastard. Falls road/Belfast was an experience getting out of town seeing as the road consisted of bar/offy/chemist/chippy/bar/offy etc etc.

Just the Romany now beggin. They even sell the papers now ffs.

Haven't been asked for change in years. Would have rather bought the geezer a can or two.

I always tend to go for the bag of chips/pie/sarnie route when it comes to giving a homeless person anything. Not sure why, maybe I'm a feeder at heart.

Offered a homeless guy a full pack of twenty once one payday when he asked for a fag. He took one look, clocked they were menthol and said "no ta mate, fuckin bingo cigs them" and handed them back.
