I posted this in the healthy lifestyle but then realized I am in the dark side... Mod, feel free to delete or move if it's in the incorrect place (didn't really know which would be better..)

Hi all

I've been reading Bluelight for years anonymously and have received loads of great feedback from everyone on here. Today, I've reached a point where I needed to join as I'm seeking help. I also plan to participate on other threads here, but first I wanted to see if anyone can provide any insight for me.

I'm in my mid twenties, slim, working in nightlife for almost ten years now. Heavy binge drinker on the weekends for as long as I can remember, and enjoyed Cocaine - sometimes adderall and MDMA. Also drank a lot of Coffee to stay up since I worked long hours.

Long story short, I was getting severe stomach pains post-drinking and partying. Also chest pains. After some time, I went to a GI doctor who did an endoscopy and diagnosed me with a Small Sliding Hiatal Hernia and Mild Chronic Reactive Gastritis. Prescribed me a few different PPI's (Protonix, Dexilant) and told me lay off the bad stuff (Coffee, Alcohol, Drugs, Spicy foods, Tomato's, caffeine - basically everything)

I've now been sober, and following those rules for over a month with no noticeable improvement in pain - but it's a crazy work season for me, 15+ hours per day that are mandatory and I can't stay up or stay focused. Following that, after working incredibly hard for months - I'm planning a vacation to Europe to finally relax. So I have two questions.

1. Does anyone have any experience with this debilitating condition? I made my bed, so now i know I must lay in it but is there any tips you can provide? I've tried DGL Root before meals, Turmeric for anti inflammatory, i've stopped the PPI as I've noticed no difference on or off them, also Pepzin GI and Slippery Elm. How long will it take to heal - any idea?

2. What substances can I use with this condition AND/OR what can I do to reduce the damage? As an example, benzo's are fine and actually help I think. But i'm worried to try dexedrine - would it be better to snort it than swallow it? Is there something you'd recommend to coat my stomach before alcohol or drug consumption? How about Mushrooms or Mushroom Tea?

In either case, this is a total wake up call and I will make long term changes on my drinking/drug use - but in the interm there is a few places where it will be neccessary and i'm trying to reduce the damage to my body.. 8(8(

Let me know, thank you x

Hey BrooklynDirt - I'm really not certain where you'll get the most responses, I'm almost inclined to leave your post here as there are several recovering and active alcoholics who frequent this forum. I'm going to leave it here for now but if you want me to move it let me know and I can.

Regarding your situation - it's going to take more than a month to heal. There are several of us here with severe gastrointestinal issues from booze, myself included. I do know you have to be on point with your diet to facilitate healing, and ideally no alcohol, smoking, certain other drugs, and dip amongst other things. You have to give your stomach enough time to heal, and I'm talking several months if not longer. You can do very real and permenant damage if you don't allow it to fully heal.

I am concerned that you are still trying to figure out how to drink alcohol which lets me know you are not taking this as seriously as you need to be. The gastritis can continue to get worse, you can very easily develope other disorders on top of it. Are you unable to stop drinking on your own to allow this to heal - legitimate question, no judgement, at your age I wouldn't have been able to. If you are in that situation I think you need to define the priorities in your life, and if alcohol remains a top priority over health really analyze what's going on.

Where can alcohol lead you if you don't make lifestyle changes now? I continued to drink well into my 30's and suffer from gastroparesis occasionally, there has been severe damage to the nerves in my gastrointestinal tract so nothing coordinates very well, I struggle to keep weight on and most of what I love to eat is off limits because I can't digest it any more. It's painful, debilitating, depressing, and there is little I can do to fix it now, though I constantly have GI issues. I am 39 now and am two years sober from alcohol. There is another user around my age who frequently discusses his issues, he recently had to have his colon removed and is absolutely miserable.

The best harm reduction advice I can give you is let your stomach heal, I know where you're at and it can get so much worse, more than you can imagine. There is nothing you can take or drink that is going to protect your stomach from binge drinking. If you can function without drugs because you work long days than it may be time to consider a career change. I wish you the best of luck!

I find nothing nice on weed, but some people when I asked them what they like on it they said it calms their stomach.
But my advice wouldn't be "try weed". It would be "see a doctor, ask him what's wrong with your stomach and what to do about it.

I'm in a similar boat, mid 20s, unable to drink alcohol or do (almost all) drugs without getting an intense burning in my stomach and intestines -- anything caustic is a definite no-no. Don't like weed, I don't imagine this is particularly good for your GI tract. Don't take NSAIDs either.

I had to take a PPI for the first 4-5 months but eventually was able to taper off them. Still need to take them on occasion if I've eaten something that has upset my stomach. No spicy / acidic / minty foods, no coffee, the whole GERD protocol I'm sure you're aware of.

Definitely do not do any psychs, these are hard on your stomach... shroom tea I would shudder at the thought. Codeine also bothers my stomach now.

I was hospitalized last November with an intense burning in my stomach (8/10 pain) after drinking 2 nights in a row. The first night was about 10 drinks, the second night was 1 drink. Was prescribed a PPI, and took about a week before my stomach settled down to a 2/10 pain.

The first few months I would have constant pain (2/10) in my stomach / intestines, which got exacerbated by the above triggers. Had an endoscopy done months later but due to the amount of time since I had started the PPI, there was no ulcer showing. There might have been one there initially though.

It's been about 9-10 months now for me, and while my condition has improved, I still have diet restrictions. The GI doctor thinks this may be for life. I definitely missed alcohol a lot when all this first started; going from having drinks after work every day for years to having nothing was a big shock. Now I can walk by the liquor store and just occasionally sigh. The cravings are still there but definitely diminished.

It does get better, but oh so slowly... hang in there
