Stimulants Started abusing my prescription (methylphenidate) 10 months ago. How can I return to regular use?

I'm 19 years old, and I've been prescribed Ritalin and Concerta for 3+ years. I used it as suggested for 2 years but then started abusing it. I don't snort it or use it for fun I "abuse" it to study and function the dose doesn't feel enough. I get that I overuse it because Ritalin has this awful thing that makes you want to keep popping those pills even if you have already taken them just half an hour ago. Currently used all of my 2 month supply in like 2 weeks and I feel like absolute shit. I want advice on how to return to my regular use.

Do you have someone responsible in your life who could help you take the right dose at the right time?

You might want to talk to your physician about increasing the dose if you feel like you need more to function

What dose are you at now?

daily prescribed dose is 56mg. I tried talking about increasing the dosage, but the doctors don't want the trouble of giving explanations as to why they prescribed that many pills. So convincing a public healthcare worker to prescribe me more is a hard task.

Oh that sucks I'm sorry. I think the max dose of methylphenidate as concerts is 76mg so you've at least got room to move up although I know you said that might be a fight. Maybe try giving it a break on weekends to try and save it for when you really need to focus?

Maybe try looking into "nootropics", aka: smart drugs. You could start with getting some L-Theanine and take it with caffeine each morning. Perhaps also look into modafinil / Provigil, a nootropic alertness aid.

Another possibility is you could try micro-dosing LSD or Shrooms.

Of course there are also street stimulants, like (depending on your country and local drug black market) amphetamine sulfate / speed paste or crystal methamphetamine hydrochloride, but these come with significant risks, particularly for someone having problems with compulsive dosing.

But otherwise the answer is to take tolerance breaks and let the norepinephrine and dopamine downregulation wear off some. When you return to it, the medicine will have its effect once more, but you still have to cycle in downregulation periods if you want it to continue working. Also, I'd advise avoiding cocaine since it works in a similar reuptake inhibiting manner as Ritalin and will lead to continued tolerance. Good luck!

Hi mate, once upon a time I was a certified psychiatric technician, and my advice to you would be to immediately alert your physician to your dilemma, before this thing blows up even more! Be not afraid, just do it, you're just 19 mate, you have many other paths opening up before you in the next few years and it would be in your very best interest to start in ejecting the baggage you need not carry! Just tell him what happened and why, and trust the guy/gal to help you get back on track!

Im pretty sure they would take me off of the meds 100% I don't want to risk that. :/

one of my friends suggested microdosing LSD too I already had 2 tabs in my possesion so I will try that and see how it goes. Trying speed is a last resort for me currently I will try to look into other solutions before it comes to that. Thank you for all of the advice :)

Next month Im planning on talking about upping my dosage again I hope it goes well this time :/

It might help to talk about symptoms that you are still experiencing on your current dose that don't feel well managed enough rather than straight up asking for an increase

Discipline.

For real. You're already taking 400% of your prescribed dose so I don't know why you think increasing your prescription will help.

Meds don't do all the work with ADHD, it's on you too.

Take a proper tolerance break, then start again on your prescribed dose. Eat three meals a day avoid caffeine and drink plenty of water.

Methylphenidate fucking sucks. On the few rare occasions I've gone on a binge with it I never wanted to touch the stuff for weeks or months after. I'd personally recommend you keep the pills in a closet or somewhere where you can't directly see it or very easily get to it. The compulsion to redose when I'm studying hard is always stronger when the pills are in plain sight and on a desk right next to me instead of in a drawer/closet.

I was planning on doing that but the main reason I started taking more and then abusing it is that I built tolerance

If you're having trouble with self control, first get a locked, timed pill dispenser. It will dispense one pill per day, or whatever the case may be:

Then put the key to the pill dispenser in another timed lock box:

This is actually incredibly helpful thank you so much I will buy one of these 100% :)

That's actually good advice all of the times I compulsively redosed are times where I had the pills really close to me
