As I am studying for my boards, I came across an interesting little fact. It states that, "...some studies have shown that St. John's Wort inhibits the re-uptake of Serotonin at the neuronal synapses thereby increasing the levels of serotonin". Has anyone heard of this and ever tried potentiating their experience this way?

I wouldnt do it, St Johns Wort seems to have some weird interactions, because were not really sure how this drugs works yet. It seems to have a slight MAOI, SSRI, and DRI activity, and probably more than that.

I think it just helps your entire brain's blood flow a little better or something, because it doesnt do anythign, but yet it does so much...

St. Johns Wort is actually a mild MAOI,
so combining it with MDMA would pose the risk of Serotonin Syndrome, soooo avoid :)

it upregulates 5HT receptors though so it might help you roll a little harder though
look into it :)

Yeah, from the research I did, it acts as a mild SSRI. Currently in Germany, Doctors use St. John's wort as a treatment for mild depression. Anything that causes extreme levels of serotonin causes serotonin syndrome. I may try St. John's Wort with a smaller X dose to see if I could get the same response.

Anything that causes extreme levels of serotonin causes serotonin syndrome.

No.... Serotonin Syndrome is a possibly life threatening drug interaction caused by the re-uptake and release/down regulation of your brain happening at the same time, your brain doesnt know what to do and it can lead to seizures and Im sure causes brain damage in some way.

^Someone correct me if Im wrong..

Due to the MILD action to St Johns Wort, you will probably be fine, but why risk it?

This is the definition of Serotonin Syndrome from PubMed which is from the US National Library of Medicine...

"Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life threatening drug reaction that causes the body to have too much serotonin, a chemical produced by nerve cells. The drugs cause too much serotonin to be released or to remain in the brain area.

For example, you can develop this syndrome if you take migraine medicines called triptans together with antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and selective serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRIs). Popular SSRI's include Celexa, Zoloft, Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, and Lexapro. SNRI's include Cymbalta and Effexor. Brand names of triptans include Imitrex, Zomig, Frova, Maxalt, Axert, Amerge, and Relpax.

To sum up, it occurs due to very high levels of serotonin in your brain.

St. John's Wart offers very little to you. There have been basically no redeeming qualities reported about this substance. It acts as an SSRI as mentioned previously.

St. John's Wort actually diminishes the effects of MDMA when co-administered. I believe it's because it competes with MDMA for binding with the serotonin reuptake transporter, I may be wrong though. But I'm sure that St. John's Wort induces CYP3A4, an enzyme responsible for breaking down MDMA, therefore speeding up the metabolism of MDMA and diminishing its effects.

However, St. John's Wort can upregulate serotonin receptors and potentiate MDMA when there is a considerable break between the discontinuation of St. John's and the ingestion of MDMA. It's recommended to wait approximately 10 days before trying to roll.
