Hey,

I know I just made another thread but this is a sort of un-related topic. Has anyone here tried St.John's Wort as an herbal remedy for depression and anxiety? I have been hearing alot of about it, and am rather reluctant to go on prescription anti-depressants.

Thoughts?

Hi CaliBoy, here's another thread I found about St John's Wort which you might want to have a read of:
http://www.bluelight.ru/vb/showthread.php?t=35859&highlight=johns+wort

But that was quite a long time ago so we can continue the discussion in here.

I tried St John's Wort many years ago and to be perfectly honest with you, there have been so many drugs and so much alcohol abuse in the time since then that I can't actually recall if it helped me or not. But it must not have had that good an effect because I went on SSRIs some time afterwards.

My best friend's fiance has tried it for his anger problems and he reckoned it helped him to a certain extent, but he was only on it for about 6 months.

What you need to remember though, is that just because it's herbal does NOT mean that it's necessarily safe. St John's Wort is a potent herbal remedy which should not be taken lightly. If you want to try it, I highly suggest you tell your doctor that you're trying it just so they can have it on your file, so that if you want/need to try something else then they will know that you've been on SJW.

Good luck, and let us know how you go <3

OP you should check out 5HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) which you can buy over the counter as well. I have found it to be as effective as citalopram and other ssri's.

^^ Yep you're spot-on, good point! Like I said before, just because it's "herbal" doesn't mean it's safe. You still have to do your research and make sure that you know what you can and can't combine it with safely.

Never had any success with it. I know its supposed to be like an SSRI and needs long term use to work, but doesn't do anything for me.

Other herbals mentioned like 5-HTP (serotonin precursor) could help but a lot of these herbal remedies are quite shit to be honest, as they're not very bioavailable. They don't cross the blood/brain barrier (like all the GABA supplements).

Other "legals" like Phenibut and Phenazapam (if its still legal were u are) are grey areas and I'd say avoid like the plague.

If you suffer from real depression see a proper doc. It will probably involve councilling and maybe CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) (at least in the UK) but you'll prob get prescribed a SSRI of some sort.

As for anxiety, benzos used to be the answer, but docs dont like prescribing them cause of abuse. Xanax is the #1 for real anxiety, but again it could hook you. Honestly, see a doc if u can. Most herbals are crap, and most semi-legals or unscheduled stuff can be dangerous. There's also a lot of "nootropics" like Piracetam that *could* help, but don't count on it.

Then again a little weed is magic for some ppl... and a good diet and maybe vits (esp B vits) and sleep could be all u need? Take a look at ur lifestyle first, and avoid using drugs as a crutch.
