I was on 20mg of Citalopram daily for about 3 years. Now I'm healthy, and have been off Citalopram for 4 months. I was wondering, could the Citalopram have permanently changed my Serotonin receptors, blocking any future Rolls?!!! If you need any more details, just ask. BTW, I did take 40mg of Fluoxetine about 10 days ago, "stupidity, I wasn't even depressed". Anyway "E" has always been like a religous experience for me. I want to get back into rollin', but I heard SSRI's can permanently block MDMA's effect

Yes there is a very real chance that permanent changes have been made.

I base that on the large number of reports such as yours that we see in here from people having been off SSRIs for longer periods than what you are discussing and still cant roll.

What about SSRI usage as a youth?

Like age.... 8-14ish? I'm not into the double digit rolling category yet, but I'm just curious. It's been over a decade since I've taken an SSRI, but my first roll was probably only 3 or 4 years after my last SSRI.

I have no idea, there are no firm rules in place.

My advice was simply based on listening to years of upset posters who have failed to roll.

Maybe never??

Thanks, MazDan

I think I'm gonna try for a birthday roll (1 month away), and hope for the best. Thanks for the helpful info MazDan.%)

I think SSRI's do more harm(permanent neurological/chemical changes), than benefit, sometimes.

Wish me luck! ;D

Can my neurotransmitters or receptors heal??

Since I will never take an SSRI again, is it possible for my brain to return to the way it functioned before I took anti-depressants? Is there anything I can do to help reverse the damage? Like supplements, or specific diet, or anything? Any advice, or opinion would help.

I dont know that its necessarily damage that has been done.

And if life is good now then why would you want it to go back to how it was when you had a reason to start the anti depressants???

Finally mdma can cause depression so it may cause even more problems.

I think there is a possibility that your brain may return to the way if functioned again, but it may take quite some time. I've read a few studies which explored the brain after toxicity had occurred and done damage to the serotonin axons, and it appeared as though after some time, more serotonin axons would build up further upstream from where the original damaged one was. This was a study relating to neurotoxicity after MDMA use however, but I've read that SSRI's can cause a similar toxicity effect, thus why it causes you to not be able to roll the same way as abusing MDMA can cause you to no longer be able to roll.

I can't say however, after such an extended period of time whether or not your brain may still react to try and make new axons, or repair whatever your SSRI did to your brain.

I was on SSRI's (multiple kinds though, as I was searching for one that would work for me) for about a year or so. Eventually, I gave up, and threw it all out the window. I was sick of trying this crap, and all they seemed to do was either make me angry, or give me sexual problems that SSRI's are known for. I stopped going back to my doctor, and stopped taking them altogether. My first roll ever was about six months after I stopped taking them, and I was able to roll just fine. Now, I didn't take them for as long as you did, but hopefully your situation will be similar. Also, try not to focus on it. You could hinder your roll if you think about how the SSRI's may have messed with your brain, and end up not being able to roll so well based entirely on the fact that you're too focused on the fact that the SSRI's might be preventing you from rolling. Walk into it with a clear head, and no expectations, and hopefully something good will come out of it.

Good luck. :)

Inositol, 8- 15 grams a day

its not damage, its just a change in gene expression that tends to be permanent.
I have taken SSRI's (lexapro) for only 1 month because of anxiety from relationship break-up.
this was last year... i do not feel the xtc buzz anymore, only the speedy part (meditated by dopamine rather that serotonin)

That's a good way to put it, but 'tends to be permanent' might be a bit misleading. Perhaps it's simply years, not months, that one would need to wait after SSRI therapy. For me, Sertraline HCl for 6 months was ceased, and my first MDMA experience (molly too lucky me) followed 4 years after. Full MDMA effects were felt and it was still one of the best rolls of my life.

Perhaps each SSRI's specific mechanism has something to do with it, and perhaps again it's person-specific. I wish the government would let us get some more research done. MDMA in the least should be rescheduled to DEA Schedule II instead of Schedule I. There IS accepted medical use.

Great data! Thanks for sharing!

It could be permanent
it really depends to what extent it has altered the gene expression at these receptor sites and how complete it is.

Though all SSRI's have the same action as being a selective reuptake inhibitor so they should all preform the same task at different strengths

UPDATE!!! I couldn't wait 'til my birthday. So I tried, good pills, I felt everything very strongly, except that empathetic connection to the Universe. :( How long should I wait before I should try again. Let's just say, my source may not be permanent. I Hope that's not against the rules BL.

My experience:
My psych prescribed me 25 my of Zoloft daily (a pediatric dose I know, I'm 5'9 and 200 lbs, not fat Im a personal trainer so it's mostly muscle. Therefore, my doc prescribed a tiny dose because daily weight trainging raises both seratonin and dopamine.) anyhoo, after about a month of taking this ssri I didn't like the effects and stopped taking it. Instead I began taking 5-HTP (200 mgs daily) for depression, after about 3-4 months off zoloft, using 5-HTP instead I dropped 3 tabs. 2 initially, 1 about an hour later. I rolled almost as good as my first time, even got that familar buzz and loved up feeling that I didn't get when I dropped on zoloft (tried it once, I know it wasn't smart). I was on a pediatric dose (I'm an adult) for a short time (1 mo.) so I guess permanent changes had nor occured as I was still able to roll.

I was on Wellbutrin for about 6 months and rolled for my first time while on it. I've only rolled once so I don't know if it was a full roll but I was definitely uncontrollably dancing and felt on top of the world so I have reason to believe I was rolling while still taking SSRI's. I've since been off of them for over 3 weeks now and I'll be rolling this weekend and posting a report on how it goes afterwards to inform everyone on my experience with it.
