I don't have a facebook. I just think that I'm addicted to the internet enough as is. But anyways, I'm in my later years of undergrad and trying to get jobs and internships, etc.

So I decided to Google myself to see what was out there. I don't have a common name and never use my real name on the internet. But one of the first (and only) things that comes up when I google my name is a facebook, with my exact name, with a picture of some girl with her pushup bra purposely showing, giving the finger which is, of course, blocking her face.

Her facebook doesn't seem to be active since there are only 4 friends and no wall posts.

Is this stupid or something to worry about?

I feel like if an employer is trying to research me and sees this that they won't give me the benefit of the doubt and think that I am that dumbass girl; that is really just a horrendous first impression.

It could be that your name is/was being used for a spam account.

What do "her" four friends profiles look like? Do they have any similarities such as the same kind of profile pictures and low friend count? If so, it's more than likely a Facebook profile used to advertise spam.

It's beyond me how they got your name though :\ Try contacting Facebook and see what they say. If it is indeed a spamming profile, I'm sure they won't have a problem taking it down.

Easier to set up a legitimate Facebook account of your own so that future employers find this when they do a search. FB can be used wisely so use it in your favour

I agree with what Busty said. Just make your own profile and you don't really have to use it, just so you have your true identity on there if you're that worried about employers searching.

Also, I don't think that many employers really search for you on google or facebook. They may look at your resume and portfolio and from there decide to interview you, and then if they really like you, do some kind of legal background check. These days with almost everyone on the internet having a facebook profile, I think most employers take facebook photos with a grain of salt. It's not like something that completely defines who you are.

^i think it depends on the field you work in. in education, HR departments will do a google search of candidates. and most school districts have some sort of social media policy in place. generally it is that you can't befriend students but some districts tell you shouldn't have a profile at all.

newsflash: out of 6 billion people on the planet, someone else has the same name as the OP. NO WAY! :D

like others have said, just register your own account, and try to setup your own personal FB 'username' if possible, here: https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=account&section=username

i'm sure this whole paranoia over employers checking FB is ridiculously overblown. any HR person making a hiring decision based on the assumption that this person had to be you would have to be a complete fucking idiot.

oh, wait...

^i am pretty sure no one shares my name. i have a fairly bizarrely spelled first name coupled with a very hungarian last name. i can only find 5-6 other people with my first name.

but i really only think people get in trouble when its something huge. like these examples of tweets gone bad.

You are cool, don't worry. ;)

There are millions of facebook pages with the same name. I have a pretty odd name as well, and there are 500 infinity thousands of ppl with that name.

There's a "report/block" link on each profile. Not sure if it's available for non FB users but if not, get one of your friends to report it. My name is unique too (so far no one in the world).

^ what? the OP is not entitled to the sole use of "her" name.

if anyone is worried that their lack of presence on FB may cause confusion, then clearly the only sensible solution is to ESTABLISH a fucking presence and take charge of the situation. you don't even need to be active in the slightest, just set it up, lock it down, and never go back.

There is one other person with my name that I can find, but she passed away in 2000. I love my name.

Don't worry about it, OP. If an employer asks you if that is your facebook account, be sure to make one (like everyone else suggested) and say "no, this is my facebook account" and direct them to it. Or just give out a general warning: let them know ahead of time if they would like to do a search on you that THAT facebook account is not yours and you are not responsible for the upkeep of it. It will let them know that you care enough about yourself to check to make sure you're in the clear.

I would hope any self respecting employer would at least ask you about that shadey account, and cannot see anyone with any internet brains finding that account and assuming its you. But making sure you have a positive internet presence is not something you should take for granted.

Its good that you make sure you dont use your real name for things like bluelight and all. There are plenty of employers that will search for your web pressence and i make sure i have my FB account set to private so only ym friends can see my updates and comments. Nothing public could reflect badly upon me.
