Is smoking pot then taking protein shakes bad for you? Whenever I take a protein shake while high I get an intense stomach ache that lasts for like an hour. Is this normal? Anyone with similar experiences?

high amounts of protein give you wicked gas and nasty shits so im thinking the weed is not effecting it at all. is it just when youre high?

as far as i know this is completely harmless

Check the ingredients in your protein powder--

If it contains an ingredient called acesulfame potassium (sometimes written as acesulfame K), or if it contains another ingredient called aspartame, these ingredients are probably the cause of your stomach discomfort.

Most protein powders contain one of these two (somewhat toxic) ingredients, which should be avoided-- get an unflavored whey protein isolate in order to steer clear of them.

most protein is toxic in large amounts, your kidneys just can't process all of it, I'd stay away from shakes if its giving you stomach discomfort, or eat more fiber

dude, it's not the pot. I noticed the same thing. I use protein shakes all day, especially after the gym, along with plenty of other supps like creatine. If I smoke weed, I gotta shit... and if I don't smoke weed, I gotta shit.

If you use tobacco when you smoke weed.... that's another story.

^That's a myth actually. The kidneys of a healthy individual can process excess protein quite efficiently.

hmmm, I'm pretty sure that they can't, it leads to a loss of calcium and dehydration, also, there is evidence to support the fact that long term protein rich diets can lead to kidney malfunction

still, feel free to prove me wrong

drink them slowly, I BET THIS IS THE PROBLEM your soo stoned yo gulp it down!

"The blood markers for kidney function of 77 men who participated in an average of 6 hours of weight training per week (average age of 26), and ate a diet consisting of 19% protein were analyzed. Their protein intake came out to be about 0.76 grams of protein per pound bodyweight, which is very close to the 1 gram per pound minimum that is typically recommended for bodybuilders. Primary blood tests for kidney function were ran in which blood urea nitrogen, uric acid and creatinine levels were monitored. The measurements showed that all of these items were within normal parameters in all participating men. Therefore, one can conclude that a high protein diet does not apply stress on healthy kidneys."

intake of resistance trained males. Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition. 2:5 (December 2005 issue).

As an individual with kidney problems excess protein is something my urologist has urged me to avoid. I'm supposed to keep my intake down to 10 grams per day. However I drink those shakes everyday and haven't had complications as of yet.

^Yeah, that's why I specified -- I'm only talking about healthy individuals. People with renal disease obviously aren't going to have the same capacity for protein intake as someone with healthy kidneys. But for properly functioning kidneys, filtering excess protein is a very natural and efficient process.

Oh I don't have any kidney disease. I'm just having some problems with some stones at the moment. My doc told me that because you can't process excess protein that it will contribute to the stones. Whether or not excess protein is "bad" for your kidneys I can't say, but they definitely can't process the excess protein.

3 shakes of 28g of protein is not excessive protein. A slab of good chicken has 30g+ in it. If you are working out your body will benefit from the extra protein, if you are not, there isn't much reason to be taking them.

Well to the people who have said that excess protein causes you kidney problems, im pretty sure that isnt true and there have been many cases to prove that theory wrong...

^In fact, I can't really think of a more natural thing for a human to do than eat excess protein...

We didn't always have salad bars and shit, back in the day you had to kill animals and eat them to survive, and there was no refrigeration so if you killed a big animal you were damn-well gunna eat that sucker-- excess protein be damned.
