Hello fellow psychonauts!

I have some shrooms in an air tight bag in a dark cool place that are almost 1 year old (assuming they had a couple of months when I bought them). They are very powdery so it's hard to tell if there's a bit of mold that has grown (I personally don't think so). Now, the thing is that it smells like shrooms but REALLY TOO MUCH. If I take out the baggy from my drawer, you can smell it from outside my bedroom.

So here's my question: Does this mean anything? Am I still safe to eat them? I think there's about 2g so there's no big deal, but I was thinking on making a lemon tek soon for a solo trip. :D

Thanks!

Please, I wouldn't eat 1 year old shrooms, not if they hadn't been kept frozen. There are all kinds of bacterial and fungal reasons why they may now be inedible, it's not really worth taking the risk. I'm sure you can find find some more to replace them. When it comes to organic matter like shrooms: if in doubt, sling it out.

Are they dry, like brittle dry? They should snap when you bend them... if they have been like this whilst you've had them stored... they are probably fine...

If they have been in just a plastic bag (no desiccant) then moisture in the air may have gotten into the mushrooms and they might have rotted somewhat. If thats the case I would chuck them out...

Next time store them in an airtight glass jar, with some desiccant (even something like silica gel cat litter will work) and they will be good for ages and ages and ages :D.

They are brittle dry for sure, that's why they are powdery. I didn't grind them, they got ground on their own for being too dry. I'm so hesitant on this one! Gosh! I repeat, they don't smell bad, they just smell like normal shrooms but in a very strong way.

Thanks for the tip about the desiccant, I'm going to do that next time. For the record, the original plastic bag had a little hole in it so the shrooms have been stored for the last 6 months in two ziploc air-tight bags - one over the other one.

As long as they are dry, they should be fine. I don't know why some shrooms smell a lot more than others. If they smell rotten thats a problem but if they just smell like mushrooms it should be fine.

I have eaten 2 year old mushrooms that I had stored in a jar and had a wonderful trip.

I also want to point out that I have some edible mushrooms I use to make pasta sauces. They are probably over a year old now, possibly more and I just made a pasta sauce with them a few days ago. I have them stored in a plastic bag, that's all. I don't see why people are so afraid to eat old shrooms when edible mushrooms get stored for long periods all the time.

Personally I probably wouldn't risk it; rotten shrooms sound like a bad idea, especially if they're still psychoactive; then you'd get a food poisoning in a mushroom trip. I'd not take the risk.

^There are also trip reports of people eating moldy shrooms and still having nice trips (certainly something I wouldn't try), but I am definitely considering all you're saying. Still didn't make up my mind. If I knew they were rotten I would through them away right now, the problem is that I'm not sure.

Does anyone know if it's possible to place them in vodka to kill undesired bacteria?

Ah that doesn't sound bad, from my experience mushrooms always have a mushroomy smell at close distance, and if they're powder dry I assume it'll be ok.

Thank you thank you thank you! I'm a happy little being. I made a thread out of this one because the shrooms smell more than any other shrooms I had before and to reassure myself about taking them. We'll see how it goes!

They should be fine. I recently took some mushrooms that smelled MUCH more than other shrooms and I was nervous about taking them too, but they were fine. Let us know how your trip goes.

I feel the need to reiterate a point of wooger's:

Plastic tends to be somewhat porous, and for this reason is not an effective long-term storage solution for something that is extremely sensitive to air/water vapor. I tend to think that some condensation may have built up in your bag at one point and may or may not have caused some mold to grow before evaporating back off. The harm-reducing suggestion in this scenario is to tell you to chuck 'em and store your mushrooms in glass or in the freezer next time.

Damn... I was almost sure they were just smelly but alright to get you in space. I think I'm gonna follow my most primitive animal instinct. But let me repost a question: would soaking them in vodka reduce any chance of casualties?

LOL. Maybe it sounds dumb but I know that alcohol is an antibacterial and you can use vodka to dilute a lot of substances if you wish to store them for long. I don't know. I don't have any vodka anyways so what the heck.

Mold can produce toxins. Even if you kill any living things that may be growing on your mushrooms, their toxic by-products may still be present. Soaking in vodka won't change that, so I'd be inclined to say it's not worth the trouble.

Yeah, alcohol is included in solutions for the prevention of bacterial growth. But if there has been bacterial and/or fungal activity on your shrooms it's the toxins that you need to avoid. They may be just fine but I wouldn't personally take the risk. I'm sure you can make a more informed decision though, if you're holding them in your hand. Eat shrooms fresh is the best way!
