Simple Alcohols

I read in an (official!) encyclopedia of drugs that there was a time when some people who had no access to alcohol drank ethyl ether. Apparently it did cause a short-lived, but alcohol-like high; IIRC, most of the substance was eliminated through breathing, because it was so volatile.

If I can find a more specific reference, I will.

For the record, I myself have always wondered if there's some unknown potable alcohol out among the huge number of alcohols out there, or among their isomers.

Bel, I have drunk diethyl ether myself, diluted with vodka, and it definately was active orally, wasn't any hangover to speak of, but it causes the belching of some rather obscene-tasting (and probably highly flammable) flatulence.

I intend on trying that route again though, it was rather intriguing.

How's diethyl ether taste? You can taste it on your tongue while huffing it, and it's fairly nasty, is drinking it even nastier?

Yes, those "V" tabs do contain Et2O & CHCl3 as active ingredients. They are sick though and too expensive to be worthwhile. But if you want to drink ether - be sure to cut it with some soda first. For whatever reason the price of ether has gone up over recent years. I think dichloromethane and toluene have replaced it where possible.

^ They took chloroform out of Victory V's a long time ago because of concernes over its carcinogenic properties. I wasn't advocating them as a way to get 'high', but as an example of the fact that, other than concerns over flammability, ether isn't too bad a compound to consume

quite a time ago i've taken chlorobutanol (111trichloro-2methyl-2propanol).
felt much like flunitrazepam but as i noticed that i really got greedy and ate about 15 grams of it.
as a result of this i had been laying 2 full days in narcosis in my room :).
btw: human ld is ~16grams :o

I was wanting to know, what about benzyl alcohol. Would BA be psychoactive or toxic? I know that they use it frequently as a local anaesthetic.

Taken from an MSDS for Benzyl Alcohol

Ethanol hasn't got a real clean record either though:

Ingestion:
May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause systemic toxicity with acidosis. May cause central nervous system depression, characterized by excitement, followed by headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea. Advanced stages may cause collapse, unconsciousness, coma and possible death due to respiratory failure.

Heh - I don't know why, but, I LOVE 1,4-butanediol, i'd take it over GBL anytime, its more like GHB in that its slow to come on/lasts longer than straight up GBL, but seemed to have a different 'feel' to it. Most don't like this, some that love GBL/GHB don't like 1,4-b at all, strange cause i loved the shit.

Also, and i'm not sure if i'm the only one who noticed this or not.. but I never felt any tolerance build up taking 1,4-b, wierd.. don't really understand how/why.

looks good because its structure is not weird [HOCH2CH2]2 and it does not contain large amounts of sodium.
