recently i've noticed that if i'm struggling to sleep, giving myself a few painful, slightly deep cuts will always help me to nod off.

I'm not particularly depressed or anything, I don't even know why I first tried it, there was one night when I just couldn't get to sleep no matter what I tried, and after cutting myself I nodded straight off.

Has anyone ever had any experience with this before? quite interested as to why cutting helps me go to sleep. I don't cut at any other time, I don't cut cause i'm unhappy, it's not like that at all, I literally just do it to help me go to sleep.

I'm sorry to hear that you feel like you need to hurt/cut yourself in order to fall asleep at night. Maybe a talk with your doc and get on some sleeping aids may help.

*edit* Maybe trying a therapist, it cant hurt to try but cutting is not the answer man.<3

Cutting, and any self-harm, is a very mysterious act. There are multiple theories about the origins and functions of self-harm in the psyche (I just went to a talk on it and there really is no consensus) but one of the things that is agreed upon is that it is a form of control that is a reaction to underlying anxiety or a chaos within. The best thing for anxiety in my experience is a combination of exercise (earlier in the day obviously) and meditation or mindfulness techniques just before bed. Have you ever done breathing awareness of any kind? Maybe this could become a replacement ritual at bedtime and speak to some of the more serious issues of generalized anxiety overall. <3

I'd suggest seeing someone to talk to. Cutting yourself isn't healthy and it's underscoring something else that's going on that consciously you are not aware of. Our subconscious is a powerful thing that affects our lives in ways that I certainly can't explain.

There are some folks that are pretty heavy into buddism and stuff like that on BL. Herbavore gives some really great advice here too with the excercise and meditation. I don't know how to meditate, but hit up herbavore for some suggestions or hit up the philosophy and spirituality page on BL.

I hope you get some rest soon, a peaceful rest that doesn't include methods that you're using today. Peace be with you.

probably a release of endorphins?

Wouldn't that be more of a rush than something that helps you sleep? I remember a friend talking about being on crank and really enjoying day 7 of a run. Day 7ish was when he was running on nothing but endorphins and a cheese sandwich.

He found sobriety some time ago, but for some reason that story has stuck with me. I have no idea to the truth of it as cr was something I tried in my youth and didn't really like. Made me feel all dirty for some reason and I'm a person that really likes my sleep which is why I'm going to follow this thread.

Well crank is a dirtier version of meth/crystal. The reason you feel dirty on amps is because it starts to come out of your pores and makes your skin all oily and gross. After my one and only 2 day binge on crystal i had to take a shower right after cause i just felt so gross. Sorry this is off topic lol.
