I'd like to know if anyone has any good information for someone who has a prescription for strong pain killers & has trouble with self control, in that it's very difficult to take them as directed without running out soon & compulsively acquiring more medication (bypassing the pharmacy & doctor, if you will), causing relationship stress due to the financial strain it tends to cause.

I'd like to know what methods can help someone to be able to reign in their abuse of the prescribed medication in an effort to reach a goal of being able to take what's prescribed since there is a true need (if you want to call treating pain a need) for the pain killers without having to stop taking anything for relief at all. Some people tend to chatter off the whole “just stop” line of advice which I view as more damaging than helpful, & obviously doesn't help since we know that millions of people make up the population of those with this type of problem in their lives. After all, if it were that easy the discussion wouldn't even be taking place.

In summation, has anyone found a helpful way to keep from abusing what is prescribed to prevent the problems that arise from the compulsion of getting more medication that can prevail for some people with the goal of not having to quit taking anything at all. I hope that I've made my question clear enough without being too cryptic.

Based upon what you have described with you compulsive behavior towards pain meds, i dont see a good positive answer to the question that is gonna help you. Maybe that is why you get the response to just stop. Take care....:-)

All I can recommend is to get someone else you trust to dispense the medication to you when needed, but there is nothing stopping you acquiring them on the side so maybe giving up the opiates would be the best thing to do.

A hole in the ground. Dig deep and far away. The whole point is it has to be a goddamn hassle to get to it. All excess pills goes in there.

Usually the urge to take more pills is overcome by the unwillingness to drive 2 hours and dig.

Like mentioned above, have a trusted family member dispense your pills for you. This is a tried and true method that is very successful.
