Cartesian theater.
For instance, "Mixing uppers and downers confuses your heart." ==> FALSE.

And the like.

This question is mainly for experienced people.

Would be nice to see a bullet point list of the most common myths
or just general drug 'pointers' to keep people informed and healthy.

Thanks.

An amusing one we got told at school during the whole 'trying to scare kids away from pills' saga. When you take ecstacy you drink so much water you can drown yourself. I dont even know what that means!!

It's not that you actually drown, but it is possible to drink too much water. When people are drinking a ton of water and not eating or replenishing their electrolytes you can actually overdose on water. A potentially fatal disturbance in brain function can result when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by overhydration. Under normal circumstances, accidentally consuming too much water is extremely rare, but it is slightly more common for people using drugs such as stimulants, when they may be very thirsty or have it in their head that it's very important to stay well-hydrated but they are not eating and they are dancing etc so they are sweating out their electrolytes. Nearly all deaths related to water intoxication have resulted either from drinking a huge amount of water in a short time or prolonged intensive exercise during which electrolytes are not properly replenished, yet large amounts of water are still consumed. Water intoxication most often occurs when a large quantity of water is consumed without giving the body its proper nutrients it needs. So the way to avoid this is to make sure you replenish your electrolytes and other nutrients when partying :)

There was a tragic news story some years ago (1995) here in the U.K where a girl called Leah Betts drowned after taking Ecstasy and drinking too much water, it was her 18th birthday party and she apparently drank 7 litres of water in 90 minutes.

I was 16 years old at the time and it's something i shall never forget.

It's a myth that mixing uppers and downers confuses that heart. However, opiates block the Vagus nerve which tells the heart to slow down. This can make an arrhythmia called STV(supraventricular tachycardia) commonly caused by uppers worse. SVT is not dangerous but is unpleasant, not sure if opiate make it into a dangerous arrhythmia. Also both opiates and uppers lower the seizure threshold, possibly causing a seizure.

Serotonin syndrome and all the various versions going around of... well, most things about it. I'm constantly reminding people (not as in constantly being a nuisance, but that I find myself having to explain myself further than "serotonin syndrome" after discussing two drugs and their simultaneous use.) about it, and then once in a while some smartass turns around and says "You can't tell anyone that, you like candyflipping." - and no matter of explanation will be satisfactory, because they know a guy who got serotonin syndrome from combining LSD and MDMA. Oh well - I'm not worried in the least.

Also, I'm sure there's a "Dangerous combos FAQ" somewhere, but people still have questions that such a topic - if successfully read by aspiring posters - would answer, every single day. The science-hippies over at the DMT-nexus have a pretty solid list of common drug combinations. Be aware that it is mostly focused on mixing psychedelics with whatever else (duh), and that the top end of their scale essentially indicates individuals' subjective opinion of the combos, but when you see "RED! BAD IDEA!" then there is a scientifically valid health risk.

a few pointers that come to mind

-when you first try any drug don't combine it with another drug

-never share a needle

-never share a straw (or other sniffing device)

-if you're unsure, don't do it

-erowid.com is a good referance for dosing

-goole/wikipeia/erowid research any drug before trying it

-mixing downers exponentially increases CNS depression and risk of respiratory depression

-any drug (apart from phaarmaceuticals that come from legit government aprouved labs) can be cut with anything

-tabs sold as ecstasy contain many other ingrediants (often other drugs that mimic the effects of MDMA) that aren't pure MDMA

-if you go on pillreports and identify your ecstasy tab, be aware there can be copycats

-a testing kit (legally obtainable over the net) will give you a general idea of the tabs ingrediants and make the consumption of xtc tabs much safer

-cannabis impairs your reflexes, you will have a slower reaction time (just one exampe), which can be danerous when driving

-cannabis affects your cognitive function for several hours after the "high" wears off

-if you are dianosed with schizophrenia, bi-polar or depression it is more risky to take psychadelic drugs

- when dosing a drug less than 100mg where the extra mg will make a difference, use a precise 0.001g scale (this applies to a lot of the new RC's)

-most RC's are new, we do not know the long term effects of prolonged use

-when raving/clubbing on ecstasy drink approx 1 pint of water/hour

-mixng alcohol an cocaine creates a new molecule in your body "cocaethylene"

-cocaethylene is 4 times more adictive and in many ways more dangerous than cocaine alone

-just because its prescribed by a doctor does not make it safe (goes especally for benzodiazepines)

- do not base how danerous a drug is on the UK (A, B or C class) drug system

theres a few

YOU DONT DROWN THO!! Drowning is inhaling fluids into your lungs until you die. Ecstacy users that drink too much water usually die from hypnotremia, its not drowning or even similar!

True, it is not drowning :) And it's not that hard to to avoid, just drink things like Gatorade, have some snacks, and make sure you are not over-exerting yourself.

I can think of hundreds of myths about drugs... It's been said that, in war, the first casualty is truth. The War On Drugs has been no exception. I will stick to myths that I have heard perpetuated by experienced drug users, as opposed to the more obvious myths.

- A person who has used LSD more than 7 times is "legally insane".
- Drug flashbacks are caused by the body storing the drug in the spinal fluid or fat cells or scabs on the brain, which at some point dislodges and causes horrific flashbacks, perhaps years later.
- LSD contains strychnine.
- Nicotine causes cancer.
- Cigarette filters are made of or contain fiberglass.
- Drug addiction is voluntary.
- All drug addicts are the same and can never be trusted.
- When someone is dependent on a drug and then quits, after detoxification / acute withdrawal ends, their brain will return to a normal healthy state.
- Cannabis causes cancer; one joint is equivalent to a whole pack of cigarettes.
- Cannabis causes brain damage and long-term memory loss.
- Opioids have no ill health effects other than causing addiction and dependence.
- Ecstasy is supposed to only contain MDMA.
- Crystal meth recrystallizes in your lungs.
- Drug dealers give drugs made to resemble candy to children to get them addicted
- Drug dealers "lace" soft drugs with hard drugs to get kids addicted.
- PCP is embalming fluid.
- Psychedelics make your brain bleed.
- A person who is in pain can't get addicted to opioids.
- If you are going to get addicted to a drug you will get addicted the first time you try it. If you don't get addicted the first time, then it's fine to keep using it and you won't get addicted.
- You can prevent yourself from getting addicted to a drug by only using it on the weekends. (This might prevent you from getting physically dependent, but you can still get addicted and soon find you are not able to stick to your commitment to do it just once a week).
- Prescription drugs are perfectly safe and have no physical or mental health consequences when used as directed.
- A person won't quit an addiction until they hit "rock bottom".
- Most addicts get their first drug from a "pusher".
- If you only buy drugs from friends, you'll get pure stuff.
- The half life of a drug is how long the effects of the drug last.
- 100% pure heroin/cocaine/etc is available on the street, you just have to have a good source.
- Only idiots overdose.
- If something is legal, it must be safe. The FDA approved it after all.
- Psychedelics can cause people to jump off buildings or out windows because they believe they can fly.
- "Research chemicals" or "legal highs" are legal to buy/sell/use for human consumption.

Ok, that's enough for now :)
