the idea of ghost in the shell is a bit of the opposite

the interesting part is about consciousness appearing in complex non-organic systems

and the less interesting part is about adding mechanical systems to organic ones in order to boost them, not the other way around

EVENTUALLY it will be plug n play. and when discussing these sorts of technologies, life extension is old news so it's not a prob to wait for the awesomest forms of entertainment ever :)
 
i really don't think it is possible for the transfer to be so easy, but anyway, entertain the notion for a second, and say the cost is five years of complete reliance on others. would you still do it at that cost?

hdd's are pretty fragile. I wouldn't want to slip on a banana, hit my head and forget how to live.
 
solid state drive capacity is getting up there these days. no reason to have plates spinning around in your head.

also, i'm sure organic computers will pop up eventually, so you might not even have to have a solid state drive either.
 
Think of all the weird sensations that would be possible if there were computer programs that could interact with your brain. Virtual drugs.
 
^ indeed, that is very fun to think about

the brain is a bunch of systems sustaining these bags of skin we have. messing around with them, right now, is only possible by filling ourselves with chemicals that are just the right shape that they screw up certain systems

imagine the future possibilities, sending electrical impulses to whatever area we want (talk about exploration of qualia and consciousness and their relationship)

Yeah, I imagine torture will be very unpleasant when the torturers can interface with your brain; fear and intense pain abounds. I imagine they use some drugs to achieve similar effects now but this would be so much more controllable.

A lot of technologies have dark sides though; usually the benefits are worth it.

this could be an intentional outcome in terms of torture and punishment, or it could be an accident. the complex systems get, the more prone they are to failure.

not worth the risks. not for an infinitely long shot.

Nah, without going too much into the details quantum computers work on probabilities. A qubit (quantum bit) is in a superposition of 0 and 1 (it's 0 and 1 at the same time) which, for reasons I don't fully understand, means that it can calculate both at once. A regular bit can only calculate the 0 or 1 in a single cycle, but the quantum computer calculates all possible calculations in a single cycle.

Probably doesn't sound that amazing but with each additional qubit the number of possible combination doubles; their power increases exponentially. So let n be the number of qubits and the number of calculations it can perform in a single cycle is 2^n. Put another way, a quantum computer with 300 qubits could perform more calculations in a single processing cycle than there are atoms in the universe.

it's possible that this could happen. but this sort of technology could alleviate even more suffering and improve the quality of life drastically for all human beings, ending more pain than it creates. plus, this is true of any technology, do you want to go back to the stone age?
