Raw Opium

My wife started growing poppies around the place, I didn't think much about it till I noticed that they were somniferous ...the real deal. Now they self seed and come up all over the place. It is legal here as long as you don't try to make opium. So each year i collect about 10 grams of latex. Scrape the semi-dried juice onto my pocket knife and scrape that onto the rim of a plastic jar and leave it lid off for the duration of "harvest season". as it drys it gets darker and denser. by about mid summer it turns into something like hard plastic...you what bakelite is? its very brittle and hard.

I cut off and weigh out 200 to 300 mg bits and pack into gelatine caps and take for arthritis pain. No more that twice a week. Its very effective and usually lasts for 2 or even 3 days relief. I get about 30 doses each year and that seems to be about what i need to take the edge off bad days.

I don't smoke anything and i like the control of oral ingestion. the caps keep the horrible taste under control.

My question is why does this raw latex go so hard/brittle? I thought opium was soft and gooey. it starts out that way but goes very solid. is there another step i should take to make a better quality product? sometimes this stuff causes my stomach to get strange feeling, not nausea and much as like a mild cramp that doesnt want to let up for hours. still worth the pain relief but would be great to purify to the next level.

WDream, the flowers start in spring and are gone by mid summer... During that time there is lots of goo. But I need to get enough stored for the rest of the year. So it sounds like i need to seal it off from the air...maybe even store in the freezer.

I dont know for sure but i don't think oxidation/polymerization is a good thing.

I have tried the teas and other ways of eating but to me the whole sensory experience is revolting. no offence but how could anyone think of this as a plus?? Maybe its my particular strain of plant...its white with purple center...the flower that is ... hey thanks for the tip off

they seem to be very seasonal, so try to sync with fall planting and look for them in spring. They seem to take neglegct but do better in good soil than spent soil. We don't get hard freezes so if you do, you might be better to wait until spring to sow. I've seen some threads on this. I'm not the best gardener
