The pits of hell
I want to quit smoking cigarettes. My husband smokes which will make it hard but I am over it, and the money it costs. Problem is I don't want to deal with weight gain or any of that bullshit. What would be a good way to quit? Cold turkey is out of the question, I have tried and gone apeshit the only time cold turkey worked was when I was pregnant. I was thinking of a taper program but I am looking for suggestions. So for those of you who have quit for good how did you do it? I cannot take wellbutrin due to bad reactions in the past but I am open to other options. Thanks in advance!

In my experience the only way to quit is to REALLY want to. I tried all the methods and the only one that eventually worked was cold turkey. I decided I didn't want to die from a smoking related illness, I didn't want to be controlled by cigs and that I was sick of smelling like an ashtray.

Sure the first 3 weeks were hard but you need to replace smoking with healthy things. I went to the gym every day, drank a shitload of water when I was craving and basically just became healthy. Even after the first few days of not smoking and being healthy I felt REALLY good. That made me want to continue and then all of a sudden you've done it.

However no amount of talk from me will help you quit. It didn't help me at all when "helpful" people tried to encourage me. When you are ready you will do it.

Oh, the other thing I still have to remember, if my brain tells me I want a smoke then I tell myself that its the drug talking. I associate it with the devil on your shoulder and basically tell him to fuck up.

^I agree with all of this post.

Cold turkey was the only method that actually worked for me as well. Every time I tried to taper the process just carried on and on until I was smoking regularly again.

I used Zyban. Worked for me. Then I went to Texas for the summer and smoked anywhere from 2 cigarettes to an entire pack a day while I was there. Then when I came home I just gave them up cold turkey, but it wasn't even an issue. Now I can smoke whenever I like (I had a couple with my brother today) and not pick it back up. That's the ultimate goal I think. I enjoy cigarettes. I just use them in moderation (I average maybe 2-3 a month now).

You absolutely have to keep busy, or you will puff away in no time fast.

Not buying, or having an emergency pack is not effective at all. If you are not busy and notice any trigger you will find a way to smoke. Shear will and determination are the only way out of every addiction.

Yes, there is help, but the help is still hitting the same receptors.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. The gum and lozenges, or the patch suck ass compared to a ciggy, but they are meant for those apeshit moments when you feel that there is no such thing as no nicotine in your blood.

I have to say this: Expect to fail an infinite amount of times, and there is always one good try that gets you past the turmoil. The key is to never give up. EVER!

It also helps to be truly committed to quitting. I tried to quit several times prior to finally deciding I NEEDED to quit not just wanted too. Once I gave into my self that I needed to quit it was nearly effortless. The hardest part is to be in situations where you used to smoke previously. If this means you do not go to a bar or stand around in the parking lot with co-workers this is what you need to do.

Re-wiring your mind from habits is the hardest part.

this is what i was saying about being in certain situations. For example I smoked when ever i was in a bar; if I had a drink in my hand I had a smoke in the other. When talking with friends outside at work I had a smoke, especially if I saw a friend light up I had to light up. When ever I was waiting for food at a restaurant I needed a smoke while waiting for food to arrive.

I dealt with these issue by avoiding drinking while i was getting the first few days of smokeless life out of the way, especially in bars. I did my best not to stand around with the smokers or hang out with the smokers cause it is really just torturing yourself. And while waiting for food at a restaurant I would order an appetizer because I do not smoke and eat the same time. It also helps to break the oral addiction. This can be done by eating lollipops. Once I finally was smoke free for a few weeks I noticed I was frequently bring my index and middle finger to my lips and would touch my lips with them. Much like I did with a cigarette while smoking. It would be completely subconscious and I did not always notice I was doing it with out someone pointing it out.

It gets easier, especially about a week after stopping. For me the hardest part was getting over the itchy feeling of my lungs clearing out. Like i so badly wanted to smoke a cig so i could pack that carbon back down into my lungs.

Sorry for the rant, i tend to do that when I'm high.

my best choice for a nicotine taper product would prob be the nicatrol inhalor. it worked for my mom and i bought it "though have yet to try it". its kinda pricey though at $200.00 and im not sure if they still make it. check your pharmacy because u need a script fore it.

Thanks guys. If I can kick xanax and klonopin.. I can quit smoking. I got some of the gum. I have one last pack. I decided to take the money I save from smoking and put half to bills and the other half to skin care and make up I want.. I am a makeup artist/photographer. but since smoking is so bad for your skin why not reward myself after a month of being cigarette free with the best skin care line I can find? I do really want this, I am just gonna need all the support I can get. Especially since my husband still smokes. Basically I would like to have it so maybe a year down the road I can enjoy one cigarette after a nice meal and have it just be that.. one cigarette. I enjoy tobacco I just don't want to be a daily, weekly, or even monthly smoker. But in order to get there, I have to completely quit and be cigarette free for atleast 6 months or more. Maybe by then the entire idea of a cigarette will disgust me. Who knows.. lol Thanks all.

I highly recommend not smoking ever in the future if you do manage to quit.
It will not go so well when your brain catches on to the fact that you are smoking again.
Then, you might slip back into old habits.

Didn't bother me. In fact I knew I had finally kicked the habit once and for all when I was able to smoke when I wanted and not crave cigarettes in the days and weeks afterwards.

The BEST way for me was, is to go online and read about lung cancer. Look at the images of the lungs.
This made me quit smoking as I was indeed very very scared after looking at those pictures of tumors growing on the lungs.

Setting negative thoughts on what smoking can do to you like the chance of getting lung cancer really made me think hard about quitting smoking.

I really wish that the Government would be more proactive and less censored regarding putting graphical images on what smoking can do to you.

So, setting a negative image on what smoking can do to you would really make one stop.....Before its too late....

I was not into the effects of the Nicotine, rather the hand to mouth motions....
If thats the case, then get one of those water-vapor based E-Cigarettes....

Money......... NUFF SAID.
How do you think they keep this up? They are eating spaghetti and shitting money.

I did it cold turkey. I still have cravings for cigs/cigars when I drink booze or when I'm bored and it's been well over a decade since I've smoked a cigarette.

Even when I'm with friends that smoke cigs and we're out drinking and I'll get very drunk and want a cig I make them promise to never give me one. I have slipped up and puffed on a cigar while drunk but I didn't inhale and I didn't smoke the full cigar like my friend did.

I also don't bum them from people at all ever.

I've dated and had long term relationships with cigarette, cigar, and pipe smokers and it's not a problem for me I just tell them to not to ever give me any tobacco or let me smoke it. I dated a man with a big tobacco pipe fetish and I didn't smoke his pipe but he just wanted to see a pipe clenched in my mouth/jaw and it didn't have to be lit so I did that for him and I thought it tasted nasty.

I found that eating candy helped with the oral fixation and so did chewing lots of gum for hours did until my jaw ached. I didn't gain weight from quitting but I did do lots of exercise while quitting such as cardio exercise and lifting.

I also remember looking at pictures of diseased lungs and seeing very old people who had lung cancer, COPD, or horrible emphysema who would never quit while they were alive and I told myself I did not want to become like them.

I'm not sure if you smoke herb but when I was quitting and I was REALLY craving nicotine I'd just smoke some herb instead.

I also liked the ritual of smoking and I found that just tapping my fingers, drawing, or doing something other than actually smoking worked.

drfeelgood1 and Psychedelic Jay-how'd you both get past the whole ritual of smoking thing or the hand to mouth motion?

LOL... I can't look at the pics It will start my panic attacks back up again and I just went off my xanax. However I do agree with you the govt should be more proactive and less censored about that. I have seen them.. But yea, I am getting one of those E-Cigarettes. It is the hand to mouth thing for me too, as well as nicotine so I am gonna do that E-cigarette thing and see how it goes.
