They say that we should not mix protein with fruit. What about spaghetti (marinara sauce, tomatoes, basil and mushrooms)?

I guess I should have said corn pasta and tomatoes + tomato sauce + mushrooms (spaghetti)

Hi OP, what I have read is that all high sugar fruits should be eaten separately from proteins or starches, especially if you are looking for a quick energy boost from a fruit.

Tomatoes are considered acidic and are not to be mixed with starchy carbs such as pasta. Food combining theory recommends to avoid mixing carbohydrates with acids. Also, if you are also thinking of adding cheese to this already difficult combo, it may result for digestive problems and after-meal fatigue since your body will require a ton of energy to digest this meal. A better option will be pasta with pesto and grilled veggies.

One caveat is that I've noticed a huge difference between fresh made tomato sauce and the canned stuff. The canned stuff is way, way more acidic and gives me indigestion.

What you can do is boil tomatoes for 1 minute to loosen the peels. Remove from the water and take the peels off, then fry them with onion, garlic, and any other fresh veggies you want. Use a potato masher to mash the tomatoes down. Once it's all mashed, reduced to simmer and then use that as your sauce. I never get indigestion from the fresh stuff.

I've never gotten indigestion from whole wheat spaghetti + tomato sauce, although I only fux with the quality sauce (i.e. the first ingredient does not say 'water' or 'tomato puree').

I don't eat cheese, though, and I have a healthful digestive system to begin with.

I'll be reintroducing this combination into my lifestyle within the next week after abstaining from it the last 12 weeks, so we'll see if that changes things.
