Question about the long-term cognitive effects of cannabis.

Cannabis won't have a negative affect on the mind when it is kept to being smoked at the correct times. ie, times of relaxation with little to no responsibilities. in other words don't smoke before you go to work, school, interview, and whatever else deemed as important. You say you smoke on occasion and i would think that smoking say like on the weekends only would have virtually no affect on your mind's ability to process anything

I believe that smoking at the correct times will mostly have a beneficial effect on the mind. Unfortunately, I got addicted and smoked all the time. If I had known about the harmful effects of cannabis back when I started using it, I think I might have used it more responsibly.

^-- 3 to 6 joints a day is a pretty hefty dose. i have heard of problems with anxiety with heavy users, especially those who stop smoking. i don't disagree that people who abuse cannabis can experience negative effects. i would also like to hypothesize that people who consume medicinal amounts of cannabis (especially edibles) are far less likely to experience those things.

Q. What's the difference between medicinal and recreational use of cannabis?

A. The ability to accomplish complex tasks.

I think you feel clear after quitting because you are coming back to baseline. As the cannabis is still in your system right after you quit, and that will ( i believe) make it a bit foggy.

The reason I do not mind however is because it seems in day to day life I over-think things, over-analyze and approach topics more actively than some of my peers. The fog just puts me a bit down closer to their level. As conceited as that sounds I'm pretty sure it is kinda true. Even if it is not I am very happy with my intellectual level in every way.

A. The ability to accomplish complex tasks.

I'm not sure if that was cited from somewhere, but that has to be one of the poorest working definitions I've seen. This would differ greatly from person to person, with veteran smokers being able to complete tasks no matter how much they've smoked. Also what would you define as a complex task? I am not a medical user (though it does alleviate headaches and stress), but I never feel like I am so high that I simply could not complete a task given to me while I was sober, at worst I would have to wait 30 minutes or so to get past the peak.

People, please realize that cannabis is still a drug. Reasonable use only means you are minimizing risk factors and possibility of psychological addiction, not that you *remove* all risk factors. Being a rationalist (some sarcasm intended):

Q: What is the difference between medical and recreational use?
A: One is legal in some states, and the user may have more legitimate reasons for consumption.

meh. all cannabis use is inherently medicinal because the endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating many of the body's functions. some people just use an abusive quantity.

therefore, by my standards, if you're too stoned to do the things that you're supposed to do, that's recreational use. everything else is medicinal.

i find smoking constantly (3x daily) for long zaps my motivation to do much besides sit around and be worthless. smoking less frequently, besides making being stoned that much more special, makes me more creative & euphoric & functional. i don't think i am affected by it as much as others though, i.e. i don't get nearly as fucked up off weed. or a lot of times i feel like i appear more affected than i feel. i definitely notice myself becoming apathetic & amotivated as well as antisocial when i make it a habit. i'm pretty lazy anyway, so decreasing my motivation is not beneficial. i'm also pretty introverted so getting so "in my own head" is also pretty detrimental.

This reason is why I suggest recreational use of marijuana only at times when relaxation is wanted and responsibilities for the moment are low. treat it like alcohol you know?

There is no amount of cannabis which can interfere with my ability to solve problems. All it does is slow me down.

^ Hate to call you on it, but doesn't a slowing of thought = an effect on your ability to solve it, IE: makes your ability to solve slower?

Just sayin' :)

If you're consistently too stoned to have any desire to do anything useful, you need to:

A. Smoke less weed, or
B. Get a fucking hobby.

Cannabis shouldn't make you want to do nothing, it should make you want to do the things that you really want to do even more. All you really need is a hit or two periodically throughout the day, maybe a little more. Smoking yourself to oblivion isn't conducive to being a productive member of society. Personally, I built a website from scratch in 9 days and I did it on a gram of hash. Why? Because it was what I wanted to do.

If you choose to be lazy, then that's your choice. Don't you dare blame it on the weed - you're the one who's smoking it. Smoke less (more often!)

Good point. I'm relatively new to smoking, but one of the big changes is that I've started focusing more on what I REALLY want to do. Lots times when I worry I'm being lazy from being stoned, it's just that the things I'm "supposed to" be doing are things I don't want to do. Being stoned helps me to recognize how much of the crap I spend my day on isn't worth doing---and I can start looking around for things to do I genuinely enjoy.
