HOTEL and motel owners will have the power to evict sex workers from their rooms under new Queensland laws.

The move, effective immediately, comes after the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled Moranbah hotel owners had breached the Anti-Discrimination Act when it denied a legal sex worker a room.

Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie introduced the changes to the Act in Queensland Parliament yesterday, noting the "ramifications" that decision had on the accommodation industry.

"This decision is being appealed by the Moranbah motel but it is necessary in the interim to change the law to give businesses certainty in controlling the use of their premises," he said.

"The changes will mean business owners can refuse a sex worker accommodation or evict them if they have reason to believe they are operating a business from their premises.

What's your thoughts? I think this is fucked. Prostitution is legal in Aus (as it should be IMO), and I do think allowing discrimination against them opens us up to a slipperly slope. 'Morals' shouldn't come into play when it comes to discrimination laws. Would they feel the same way if a 'psychic' or what have you was operating from their rooms? If so, the laws should define the breach as being operating any sort of business out of the rooms, not just sex workers.

It's the same as any other job IMO. I know some nice girls who are sex workers, they don't deserve people giving them shit for what they do. People have sex at work all the time, how is that different?

Yeah it should be broad and cover any sort of business I guess. Aren't there certain restrictions on prostitution? Are pros allowed to solicit sex work from people in the street? I don't think you can just set up a brothel from a private house either without council approval. But are those hotels also going to kick out or evict men who order escorts to their rooms? Or is that ok? It would suck if you are a nympho chick and living or staying in a hotel for a while and just like to have different men over to have sex with several times a week, it might get tricky as they will probably think that she's a pro.

ps) read the comments on the link.

Unless she is getting paid then the law is not applicable

These workers are usually not solo self employed prostitutes, but rather working for pimps in a non regulated pseudo-brothel situation. There is plenty of scope for women to work as prostitutes in Qld in legal brothels or from home under the current laws. We are talking about basic motels in mining towns being turned into a multi prostitute dwelling which is illegal. The nature of the towns means that these motels are filled with usually overseas women who are often employed as sex slaves in any normal definition to feed the transient mining population and it is perfectly acceptable that the locals would be pissed off. This isn't the case of Julia Roberts being snubbed on Rodeo Drive.

Prostitution is heavily regulated and I think there is plenty of options available without turning someone elses business into a brothel. The motel owners rights should out weigh that of the prostitute.

This comes as the Prostitution Licensing Authority released its annual report, noting there were 24 brothels in Queensland in the past financial year and 197 compliance orders issued.

Does that mean there are 24 brothels in QLD? Surely there must be alot more than that. Or am I just sunburnt and tipsy.

That sounds about right. There are only around 10 in Brisbane and at least one has gone broke in the past year. The number of solo prostitutes though seems to be unlimited. As long as it is just you and no obvious pimp you can still work from home.

Wow, i've been to brissie before a few times, but didn't really know it was that much smaller than Syd for that industry, I think there's over 10 in some certain streets in the city in Syd. and then all the outer suburbs there must be hundreds just about.

I guess brissy has half the population of syd, but still.

There are a number of areas of concern not the least being OH&S implications. What if a client is injured during sex on the premises? Who is liable as public liability insurance is not very high on street prostitutes priorities?

Massive differences between prostitutes working in a legal establishment with the proper permits gained at considerable expense to the operator & a streetwalker using a motel as a cheap knock shop.

If it was my place I would refuse anyone that even looked at me cross eyed, smelled funky, I think I would even do some random evictions for a laugh, penny pinchers, cost savers and coupon holders, banned banned banned!
