(AXcess News) Chicago - Illinois police arrested a Catholic priest Wednesday, charging him with dealing cocaine on the campus of the University of Illinois from the church rectory.
The Reverand Christopher Layden appeared in Court the following day with his attorney, entering a not guilty plea.
Layden,33, was charged with two counts of delivery of less than 1 gram of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a church and one count of possession with intent to deliver 1 to 15 grams of cocaine near a church.
The Catholic Diocese of Peoria has suspended Layden from his priestly duties pending an outcome at his trial.
A search of Reverand Layden's home turned up 3 grams of coke and drug paraphernalia, court records indicate.
When the Catholic priest was arrested, Illinois police picked him up at St. John's Catholic Newman Center following the search of his home and office.
No information was released as to how police caught onto the alleged coke dealing member of the Catholic clergy. The Catholic Diocese in Peoria has not commented on the case.
