Hi, I've just recently found out I'm pregnant. I had 2 implants back in April put in by George O'Neil in Australia. I've tried asking Dr.Coleman in Richmond to remove these implants since I'm not cool at all with the idea of carrying a child with these unnatural things. Seems Dr.Coleman and Dr. O'Neil don't want me to have them removed. :/
What are my rights in this country? Is there anywhere I can go? :?

while i'm sure you have the right to have them removed (just find a doctor that'll do it) I think the reason the other two doctors want them not removed is for the sake of your child. I'm sure you don't want to relapse and harm your baby either.

That's not the point.. I'm not going to relapse, I have a child growing inside me. I'm not prepared to be another statistic for these doctors annual papers. Apparently Naltrexone is a class C drug meaning there could be harmful effects to the unborn child. My question is does anyone know of any doctor I can see who will stop railroading me? I'm Australian, living in Richmond, Virginia. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ^_^

See other doctors, the two you named are not the only doctors licensed to practice medicine in the state of Virginia.

I would not want the mother of my child taking any drugs especially ones considered unnecessary, including naltrexone.

IIRC, naltrexone can be court-ordered, your implants weren't involuntary were they?

I would be curious whether you would need to be treated by an OBgyn or an addiction specialist? I think any good doc would want to have an in depth conversation about everything involved in the removal of the implant, and what your risks are, any sort of follow ups etc... I get why you want it out, but I would want to get as much importation as possible before making any moves- if for no other reason than to know what to expect. I've lived in Richmond for a long time. If you want to PM me I can give you names for addiction doc, OB or both if you like. And for what it's worth I have little use for Coleman.

I'm not going to comment on your right to remove the naltrexone implants, but I do think that you would benefit from a better understanding of the risks associated with naltrexone use during pregnancy.

First off, FDA Category C doesn't mean it will cause harm to your baby. What it means is that doctors don't conclusively know if the drug is harmful or safe because not enough research has been done. Also, it is important to understand what the word harmful means. It doesn't have to be birth defects - it includes anything considered outside the range of normal, like low birth weight, high birth weight, or born prematurely (even 1 week premature would be considered a "harmful effect"), etc. Many OTC drugs are category C (advil/ibuprofen, aleve/naproxen, etc).

I also thought I'd research what medical information there is on naltrexone in pregnancy for you:
- There are no clinical trials proving its safe, but there are at least 25 published cases of women with implants becoming pregnant. In all 25 cases, the babies had normal birth outcomes.
- When rats are given 50x the normal human naltrexone dose, their babies are born fine. When given 200x the normal dose, there is a small increase in miscarriages
- According to a 2012 opinion statement published by addiction specialists and obstetricians, "While potential confounding factors were not controlled, the results suggest no evidence
of an increased risk for poor neonatal outcomes with prenatal naltrexone exposure" (reference here)

Disadvantages:
- The biggest concern about being on naltrexone is to you, the mom, is that naltrexone will block the effects of pain killers used during childbirth (epidural fentanyl) or in a worst case scenario, c-section.
Advantages: (assumes that you relapse)
- You don't want your baby born addicted to opiates
- Opiates have been proven to increase risk of birth defects. No such "hard evidence" exists for naltrexone.
- Opiate withdrawal can kill your fetus (spontaneous abortion), or induce labour causing the baby to be born prematurely.

**This is general information and is not my medical advice to you**. I agree with others in thinking you should see obstetrics and addiction physicians, and have a long, open, and honest conversation about the benefits and risks specific to you.

I can't comment on whether or not it's dangerous to your baby because I don't know. No one knows.

BUT- I will say this:

You have every right to have them removed. You don't need a reason unless they were placed in you by the court system. You need to call the doctors and tell them you want the "FUCKIN STICKS OUT OF MY ARM" - they have no right to tell you that they won't remove them. They put them in there, they are 100% responsible for the maintenance of your implants.

Also, worst case scenario is that you go to the hospital. The doctors may be able to get them out. How deep are they, and where are they at exactly? If the doctors cannot have them removed I can promise you that a surgeon will be able to take them out for sure. I don't think you'll make it past the doctor though, they should be able to cut them out (I've had doctors alone do some pretty gruesome procedures with cutting tools and my body...)

This is what you should do-
1) Make sure that you are 100% that you want them removed, and that you are again 100% that you will NOT be using drugs.
2) Call the doctor(s) who put it in. Yell at them, tell them you want it out of your arm or they face legal action. You are pregnant and it's for the safety of your baby.
3) If nothing comes of that you can decide to do 1 of the following:
---a) Call around and find other doctors that do naltrexone implants, there will be one willing to help remove them I'm sure.
---b) Call the hospital and see if you can set up an appointment (You don't have to go to the emergency room) to see a doctor or a surgeon about having them removed.
4) Decide based on price, wait time, and your comfortability with each individual doctor as to which your best option is best for you and your baby.

Good Luck!

^THIS

If it was not involuntarily administered and YOU ARE CONFIDENT THAT YOU WILL NOT RELAPSE which im not saying you will.
I can tell you are taking this VERY seriously and dont want any harm done to your child, and i applaud this, i truely do, you are making a WONDERFUL choice and you should be very proud of yourself for not taking an easy way out or wanting to harm him/her for your own needs and being a confident and serious enough adult to control your urges ect.
You have a right to have any (non court mandated ect ect lol) procedure or whatever done, undone, redone, ect.
Take charge, your just being cautious because of the risks it could present to your child and they can get over themselves, be assertive and dont take no for an answer, explain that it was YOUR choice YOU have the right to undo it or do whatever its your child its your body they need to respect that or you can figure out a way to make them or just find someone who WILL respect your rights and decisions.
Hope this helped somehow, call around to some doctors and do some research online; youll find someone/something that will answer your questions and respect your decisions and rights.
Your making a fantastic decision to keep your baby and keep them from any potential harm(s). Children are wonderful (most of the time ;P but you get my point).
You know your rights, just assert yourself and youll get what you need (i hope)
Best of luck and i hope that this helps in at least some sort of way.
Once again congratulations and i wish you and your family all the best :D
Oh, you might try contacting some sort of legal service. Not really saying a lawyer but theres probably somewhere you can consult someone 2 find out your EXACT rights.
