Actually, the message isn't from me, per se, seeing as I have yet to be introduced to the world of pharms (although I'm sure it would be great fun).
My mother suffers from a disease known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. If you know about it, I'm extremely sorry -- it probably means you know someone with the disease. For our intents and purposes for this post, however, all you *really* need to know is that she's a chronic pain sufferer.
She gets raspberry-flavored Actiq (brand name for fentanyl) intra-mucosal suckers for her breakthrough pain -- 800mcg. Question 1, I suppose, is whether or not they *do* have recreational value -- I assume they do, she has to fill out triplicate forms.
Now, my father is an avid backpacker, and is getting to that point in his life where he needs to take solo trips to get to where he's going (no one keeps up anymore). He asked me at a dinner recently what I thought would happen if he stuck one of the suckers in his bag lest he break a leg on the trail or some such.
The labels clearly state: "for people already under opiate prescription" or some such. He's worried about possibly overdosing and/or whether or not the sucker would hold him through until rescue arrived. He weighs 200lbs. Has an average to slow metabolism, but the hiking helps. For all intents and purposes, were he to break his leg, it would probably be on a mostly empty stomach (he doesn't eat much for breakfast -- just some instant mix).
So, anyone have any suggestions other than grabbing the box and hoarding them for myself?
