I've been growing for a few years now, and I've heard some wild tricks and tips. Some are far fetched yet work, while others seem reasonable yet don't work period.

I was recently introduced to another one of these tips that I just can't wrap my head around. I have never heard of it, and all the other growers that I know have never heard of it or tried it.

My girlfriend was saving a few old birth control pills she had, when I asked why she told me that her friend asked her to keep them because he grinds them up and puts them into the soil before he plants a germinated seed. When I asked "Why the hell would you do that?" she said it was because he thought it improved the chances of producing a female plant.

I instantly dismissed the idea as purley absured and even somewhat dangerous. I mean honestly who's going to add the wild hormones that are in birth control pills into their plants medium???

I know that when the tail sprouts out of the side of a seed then 90%+ of the time it will be a male (100% from my exp) so it seems to me that the gender of a plan is determined before it has even sprouted.

Regardless, have any of you heard this or tried it before? What are your results if so?

I'm not 100% on this one but I'd bet it was false, I had 50/50 male female ratio just by controlling the heat and stress factor of seedlings. Ususaly a supplement of pro-tekt silicon solution helped out too. :)

sounds retarded to me. making feminized seeds is done by very experienced breeders who probably have degrees in botany and what not. not by soaking their seeeds in birth control pills. lol

feminised seeds come from hermaphrodised female plants (most of the time).

birth control pills in soil? There is absolutely NO scientific reason for this to work.
your girl's homeboy is retarded. the hormones in the pills are for HUMANS.
plant hormones are different, my friend.

and the little "tail" is called the taproot. it is the first part of the plant that grows/roots into the soil.
it has no determination on sex at all, and the plant is undecided on its sex until about the 1 month mark.

this is CD, definetely not a place for good info on cultivation.
no offense to anyone, (nobody in this thread) but this board (Cannabis Discussion) is chock-full
of idiots.

check out International Cannagraphic or UK420, they are pretty good grower's sites if you're interested in the art of cultivation.

peace

dont think estrogen effects plants the same way as animals, though many plants produces estrogen or estrogen-like compounds (which is where birth control pills are derived from).

id run a google on "genetic sex determination in plants" should get ya started
