How much is it normal to pee?

I read an article the other day where a doctor said the average person pees about 6 times a day, passing about 1-2 cups of urine at at time.

I timed myself the other day and it was at least 10 times, I know other days I've gone up to 12 or more times. Sometimes it's just for the tiniest bit (like a dribble). Except for first thing in the morning, it's completely colourless. I feel really, really uncomfortable if I even *slightly* need to go but don't. Some nights I can go to the toilet up to 4 times before I feel ready to go to sleep!

I know I drink a LOT of water (like, 3 litres a day) but maybe this is not normal. Should I be "holding" it, like the article recommended to do, to train my bladder? (they say to avoid going "just in case" or you'll get a 'weak bladder'?) Or is this nothing to worry about? I have been tested for diabetes - negative.

I'm the same and I got myself tested for diabetes because of it. The doctor didn't seem too concerned at all.

I think I've already gone at least 15 times today.

I've read that you should train yourself to hold it longer because women are more susceptible to becoming incontinent with age and also pregnancy, so it's probably a good idea to start holding it in for a bit longer than you normally would.

Have you ever noticed that if you spend the day out doing alot of stuff you go to the toilet less anyway? I find if I'm just relaxing at home I need to pee more often.

^ absolutely! If I'm on an outing or something, or even a long car trip surprisingly, I can hold it in for hours at a time. But just sitting at my desk at work, or at home on the couch meters away from a toilet, as soon as I get the *slightest* urge, I have to go. Up and down, up and down. I went 4 times just during the OC the other night.

(my doctor, too, didn't seem concerned at all.)

Dont worry it's perfectly normal, i'm exactly the same way.

I used to worry about the whole diabetes thing aswell, as frequent urination is one of the major symptoms, but i mean really if your drinking a shitload of water you have to expect a few more toilet stops.

I'm like you, before bed i can go 3-4 times in the space of an hour. And its not alot each time, i just feel the urge and i know that if i get into bed then im just going to have to get up in another half hour to go anyway so i might as well do it before hand.

I think its a good idea to try and train your bladder so it doesnt get lazy and i've often thought of doing it, sometimes when i remember i'll try and hold off on going but most of the time i'd rather go just because i hate that feeling of needing to go, even if it's just the smallest drop, it's an uncomfortable feeling.

Its very much a psychological issue as well, because often if your out all day and your mind is occupied elsewhere you'll forget to go and wont really acknowledge the need unless you really need to go. Also with going so many times before bed, you know you could go, so you tell yourself it's best to go to ensure a good uninterupted sleep, and for biological reasons women naturally need to go more often then men.

The bladder is very much an organ that can be trained and strengthened. It's not the best idea to just start waiting till your wetting your pants, it can be damaging and have the opposite effect, rather just stop going because you could go. Pelvic floor exercises are a good help too!

Slm, dont worry about going so frequently you drink alot of water (I hardly drink 1.5 Ltrs daily) and clear urine means your well hydrated :)

<3

Depends , I drink lots of water ( 1 liter at least a day ) so its normal I pee a lot , but if you dont drink water then its related to stress or emotions.

Hey SLM I pee quite a lot too.....especially when I stopped doing drugs, started exercising, and still continued to drink gallons of liquids. At first I thought it *might* be a symptom of diabetes or something, but when I went to my doctor (I had the fasting-blood glucose test aside from the regular medical checkup and blood test) I came out clear.....so I guess its just a sign of a better functioning and healthier body? =D
I NEVER used to pee at night before (even if I drank roughly the same amount of liquids I do now, I'm not sure if that was related to my drug use) . But now that I am sober i can definitely tell the difference : I get up to pee about 3x a night and I go to the john a lot more (8-10 x more!) than I used to in the past. :)

I am the same, I drink alot of water, but especially at night, ill have to pee 3-4 times after my last drink. I had a test for urinary infection but nothing was wrong. As soon as I feel I have to go I cant ignore it and have to go to the toilet. Its something thats only just started in the last year so at first I thought there was something wrong, but the doctor didnt seem too worried and every test came back fine. Only other thing I think it might be is enlarged prostate, but Im too chicken to ask to have that checked.

Also, I occasionally get a few drops of urine leak after I pee but doctor cant find anything wrong with me, so guess I have to live with it.

I piss much more than six times a day. Of course I drink copious amounts of tea/mate(which contain caffeine, a diuretic), and drink more than the average person due to my exercise habits.

During the work week, I drink at least 2.9 L per day. 5 bottles @ 591 ml.

I must pee at work at least once every 1.5 hours. I have to remember not to hold it during a busy work day otherwise i would be every hour. Are they going to pay for my bladder suspension when I am older? Nope. Note: take the time to pee when I have to.

I drink less water at home so I won't have to get up during the night.

Weekends I drink less water and I pee less. My urine is not colourless so I know I am not properly hydrated. I am more regimented in most areas Mon-Friday.

My fiance's mom's rule is that if you are not urinating every hour, you are not getting enough fluids.

I drink about 6 litres a day, yet only go about 3 times. But it takes me ages to piss.

god ive never timed it but im sure i pee maybe 8-10 times a day (and i know i dont drink enough - i have to force myself to drink anything other than coke or energy drinks), and its sometimes a bit dark-yellow
naturally if ive bn drinking alot of coke, coffee or im on stimulants
i pee alot more wen im trying to get to sleep as well, cos i guess im more conscious of bodily sensations wen i dont have anything else to concentrate on

What goes in, must come out. If you drink 3 litres a day you will sweat a little out, and urinate the remaining. If you are dehydrated or ill, you will naturally retain water. Everyone is different and no one is normal. Normal only really means that things haven't changed considerably ...for you specifically.

Unexplained changes in function warrant investiagtion by a medical professional.

Drinking when you feel thirsty (*IMHO) will sufficiently provide your body with enough hydration. Increase your intake of fluids during physical exertion and warm climate to replace any sweat loss. You should attempt to relieve yourself when you feel the urge. Going to the toilet later ...or earlier all the time, may cause undesirable alterations in your elimination systems. Yes you can train your bladder and yes you can develop a weak bladder.

If you think there is a medical issue with your intake or output ...do some monitoring and recording of your symptoms and outcomes ...then present this information to a medical professional you trust.

Your personal situation sounds like it needs medical evaluation Strawberry Lovemuffin. "Frequency" and urges to void without a full bladder (approx 350ml) indicates an issue. There could be many causes and a variety of treatment options.

Personally I suffer from an "anxious bladder" and feel the urge to purge the pee especially at night time ..."just in case".
I have since learned to retrain my bladder, and my mind to an extent. ...hey no one is anxiety free!
I still occassionally find that I have no control over the anxiousness of the entire situation. I give in every now and again and submit to the feelings of "pressure". Episodes seem to come and go, ...depending on my level of stress.

Good luck ...happy trails :D

Thank you all for the information and personal experiences in this thread. Its nice to know I'm not the only one suffering from these issues. I would not be surprised if generalized anxiety disorder plays a role in my urinary issues, as well as possibly needing to retrain my bladder. It may seem odd, but this thread sort of made my day. :) BTW, I am seeing a doctor about this.

You know, I have noticed I have been generally more anxious lately. Sleeping problems where I *never* normally have sleeping problems; over-thinking things, catastrophising small events, obsessively dwelling on things. I wonder whether it's linked, as you say. Food for thought.

ps. I have been planning a wedding, which is enough to send anyone around the bend, IMO ;)

Please don't attempt to gain better bladder control by resisting the urge to urinate. This is utterly stupid as it will eventually lead to a weakening of the bladder wall, and ultimately cause incontinence - the very thing you're hoping to avoid.

I've personally known 4 ladies who were all "holders"; reluctant either to go to the toilet while away from home, or simply amongst strangers. All of these women became incontinent by their late 40's/ early 50's. One lady- a friend of my mother - had serious complications (likely from this practice) during her late 30's; bladder infections, cystitis and renal problems. Her urologist claimed her series of disorders was often associated with a history of holding on for long periods - which she had done since her teen years.

Spesh says to learn pelvic floor exercises as that will help with toning, and added that you shouldn't even contemplate having a baby until you've mastered these exercises. There is also a series of taoist exercises where a cone or egg is placed in the vagina with attached weights, and the muscles are then exercised in different ways. An excellent book on the subject is "Cultivating Female Sexual Energy" By Mantak and Maneewan Chia.

I would also suggest that -as men (should) do to exercise the prostrate - women should also apply the stop/start routine several times while peeing. This should be done so the stream is completely stopped (no dribbling) each time.

I had the same problem I did however drink alot of water. I think it was mainly in my head as I trained myself to just hold it in and the feeling would go away after a while. Eventually I just start peeing less regularly but larger amounts.
