🌟🌟 Social 🌟🌟 PD Social Thread 2022-2025 v. Year of the Phenethylamine

there must be a very large edge to be gained through trading.
For sure. I think what makes Catan fun IRL is getting drunk with your buddies then trying to haggle for resources yet having to decide is this in my best interest? Will they take that brick I traded them and build a road blocking my port off? I'm gullible so people easily pull one over on my when it comes to trading. Takes a bit of a sociopath to do it well hahah.

I've only played the one with the boats... Its cool for novelty but I prefer the main game.

I dont agree that it's a simple game though, yes there's not too much you can do and it's easy to learn but I'm sure there are a lot of subtleties you don't see after playing a couple times. There's a reason it's played semi competitively.

I played a card game online for a couple years, until the site shut down, and in essence it was an easy game where you could get decent quite quickly. But there are so many spots that aren't as clear as you once thought, so in every one of those you can have an edge against others. And since nobody knows the true solution (not even a computer) you just come up with your own kind of strategy and playing style... By the end I was statistically top 10 out of a couple thousand, but there were still clear gaps in my game, only the ones that I knew off but didn't know how to do better. There was a guy or two that you could feel were just way better and understood things about the game that I was yet to discover.

But you need to just churn out hundreds or thousands of games to understand a game at that level. I get the feeling Catan could be similar for me. There's not too much imperfect information however so developing your own playing style isn't as much of a factor, but I still feel like there are quite a bit of tough spots in a regular game, and there must be a very large edge to be gained through trading.

My favorite game of all time is Magic: The Gathering. The level of complexity and strategy is pretty overwhelming to beginners but it's an amazing game. And actually it's overwhelming to me now, too... I played religiously as a teenager, but there is so much new stuff to the game now, they churn out new sets multiple times a year. My brother keeps up with it, it's his main hobby. Whenever we get together and play it's pretty intense for me. Every other card these days is designed to change the rules of play. Hard to keep track of, but if you're into it and keep up with it, you get into the groove. back in the day I knew every card by heart.

MtG changes too much for my liking. Within a year your deck is always obsolete for the latest rounds of competition. I did some MtG competitions years back now but the yearly turnover with new decks each year was annoying and costly.

Yeah it's pretty intense. I haven't been into it in a very long time. I get fatigued playing with my brother these days. My head hurts after one game and he wants to play like 5 in a row, lol.

Back in the 90s it was much less intense, but still an amazing game. Less new sets, and a smaller set of possible things cards could do.

Anyone here that plays Catan?
I recently lost a game irl, which I dislike, so I bought it and installed it on my phone. Great game man, so many aspects to it, you gotta take a lot of decisions and there's never a clear solution. I don't like the memorization aspect, which is important for trading and your general strategy, though, but that's just because I suck at it.

I need some competition in my life, and I've proven I can't stick to chess. I'd like to play Stratego online as well but I'm scared I'm not good enough since it's not a very popular game, and I have to be honest in that I really don't like losing. Get over it, play the game and enjoy yourself dude
I used to love playing Catan and Stratego as a kid and I’d love to play online with you if you’re interested.

Yeah sure, sounds good! Don't actually know if it's possible to play Stratego anywhere anymore, would be sick if it there were something easy and accessible..

I was reading a Deepmind paper on Stratego earlier today, they managed to develop an AI that's on an "expert" human level very recently. Game has like 10^500 different game states, if you thought a googol was large, try Stratego ;)

Never played it, it's pay to win?? Disappointing...

2 years ago on this date I had one of the most powerful acid trips of my entire existence def top 5. Transcended space time and saw god in infinite dimensions. Been thru quite a bit over the year. That trip changed my life forever. And out of the blue things have changed and im feeling really good today. So many things can come full circle. Sept is a month of trials for me that birth me into a new human every time. These days I do not consume any drugs. I miss acid but ima try stick to been sober
I remember well my friend.

I have spoken about I believe my own virtually transgressional memory to re walk visually, emotionally etc back through ancient psychedellic experiences.

Real thing I swear too!

It enables a guage of things.

But...lol, being a visual operating man I naturally build these mental scenes for other's tales too.

@Buzz Lightbeer lol you made me laugh picturing like a mini movie you scuppering away in unease cross panic that night up on the hill in the park, dude chasing you.

When All he probably saw was a giant syringe sprinting off hehe.

And @TripSitterNZ I recall you walking (your dog?) that night, sketchy chat with older straight local on path, then runawild crackhead car to practically dodge right?

Iirc ofc lol.

700 ug you estimated too right?

That's heavy tripping.

300 is ENOUGH. Twice 350 is beatiful, otherworldly and transcendental as you say.

Glad to see you still here joining in tool don't be too rash mate in life please, calm, patience, peace is the way and they never claimed pen is mightier than sword no reason too!

I am out of this game for now, or innocent self explorative fun, into a v different, quite horrific gruelsome enduring and SO isolating too real battle heavily detoxing AI Nanotech.

Never knew you guys were into Magic, @Xorkoth and @Cream Gravy?. For years I was obsessed and played until my mid twenties. After I got older and didn't have people to play with IRL easily I was really into playing online. But I stopped for similar reasons the game was changing too much and I just had hard time keeping up and honestly I was nostalgic and missed the way it was in the earlier days.

I'd started in the 4th edition era. When I got my first Wrath of God, Serra Angel and Shivan Dragon we're such happy days for me, had a Moss Emerald bunch of the rarer cards. That last one was worth two hundred bucks at the time. Alot of the changes that made it so complicated is why I drifted away as well. Will always have a found place for it in my heart tho, so many good times.

It pays if you’re good lol. My cousin-in-law (wife’s cousin) supports a house and a lush lifestyle in San Francisco off a company he started selling MtG cards. It blows me away how wealthy he is off just trading cards essentially.

But yeah at local competitions there’s usually a small cash prize or an offering of booster packs for the winners. They can go for many, many hours as the group whittles down the brackets to two people eventually.

It was fun while I played. The late hour competitions and the cost of the cards drove me away.

Edit: ohhh “pay” to win, I misread that lol. Yeah MtG is somewhat pay to win. There’s always some OP cards each series that cost a hundred bucks a pop at the outset and become meta game cards. I think that along with it being a cash grab is why MtG changes annually. That way you always need to buy the newest meta cards.

It's changed a lot. In the 90s, you just bought packs, that's how you got cards. And traded them with people. Some were rare, and worth more. It's become a lot different now and changes too quickly for me. I enjoy playing it less and it's way more competitive.

I used to play Magic the gathering too!!

Like @Cosmic Charlie, When I got into it 4th editing was the latest thing. I've got a few expansion set decks, too.

I haven't bought any new cards or played in so freaking long. We should all try to play a game sometime in the discord server on voice chat or something lol.

Oh man, my old group of friends used to play that in the mid-1990's. One time they said, "Just watch us play for a little while and you'll figure it out.". Riiiight. I watched for over an hour and all I saw were a bunch of people throwing cards at each other and yelling out random things!

yeah i walked my dog the next morning. I had dropped acid at around midnight was walking around the streets around 9-10 am. Was fucking wild and do not forget the off duty cop i also had to speak to on the way home because his own dog jumped over his fence to come at me.

All while feeling fried as fuck from the long night on acid and trying to come to terms with been a human after a powerful ego obliterating experience.
