Oxy and hydro tolerance

Hi,
I was on hydrocodone earlier for chronic pain and recently was switched to oxycodone and taken off the hydro. The oxy was a bit too much for me the 3 weeks I was on it. I had a moderate tolerance to the hydro as it took about 20mgs for relief. After I switched back to the hydro I took, per usual, 20mgs. Well, not only did it mess me up (got high duh) but it made me super nauseous. Sooo my question is, can being on a stronger opiate lower your tolerance for the weaker one? Is that even possible? I'm not complaining just didn't know it could happen...?

Thanks all

Due to absorption issues, tachyphylaxis, etc., you can sporadically get higher than expected from typical opioid doses. Also, this doesn't fit ADD; please read our discussion guidelines before posting again.

ebola

OP is on them for chronic pain so getting off them might not be an option right now.

Am also a chronic pain person and have had similar things happen going from oxy to hydro though it goes away fast. Not sure if the unexpected buzz (as well as nausea) from the weaker drug is necessarily a tolerance thing, at least in the very short term. As ebola mentioned there are a lot of factors involved in how a drug hits you in a given dose, and the change in meds can make even a weaker opioid feel stronger at least in certain ways, in my case making me feel higher for a day or so if only out of less body/mental familiarity but not helping the pain as much either
