I am writing a paper for school about the effects of drugs on the body. I was looking on the internet for statistics on the annual deaths attributed to drugs (this includes alcohol and tobacco) but so far I haven't found anything sufficient. I swear that someone gave a link to a chart of the pertinent info however my searches on this site have turned up nothing. Could someone please help me find that link?!

I am sure someone will have something.. all these are a little skewed toward the certin organization that took them...
Post yer report, it should be good to read!

I will try to post it after it is finalized. I am trying not to seem too pro-drug but it is hard not to when the books I check out at school say how while opiates can cause overdose but alcohol withdrawal can kill and 150,000 people a year die from alcohol poisoning! Before I new it I wrote a half a page on MDMA. I wrote about recent evidence points to brain damage, then In parenthesis I wrote how fenfluramine and prozac cause the same damage at therapeutic doses. Anyway, thanks ahead for any help on this chart thing.

I believe if you allow yourself to puke after you may have had to much to drink, their is no such thing as alcohol poisonning.

Thanks for that, I'll be sure to put that in my paper! [kinetic makes farting sound with mouth]

Of course it must be noted the only proof I have of this is every time I get pretty drunk I puke, then I drink more, possibly puke one more time before bed.

Joseph, you're kinda dumb. The reason you puke is because you're poisoning yourself. It's your bodies way to tell you to stop putting poison in your body.
But hey, no offense or anything.

"their is no such thing as alcohol poisoning."
Umm up in flames with you...
Ethanol it self, and it s metabolite acetaldehyde, are both neurotoxic and "poisonous".
From Erowid…. ( great place to check out by the way…..)
“Drinking heavily over a short period of time usually results in a "hangover" - headache, nausea, shakiness, and sometimes vomiting, beginning from 8 to 12 hours later. A hangover is due partly to poisoning by alcohol and other components of the drink, and partly to the body's reaction to withdrawal from alcohol”
another blurb…..
“Alcohol can cause death directly by acting on those brain areas that control consciousness, respiration and heart rate. As a central nervous system depressant, alcohol can "turn off" these vital brain areas, resulting first in coma and then death.
In many cases, drinking too much alcohol will make you sick and you will stop drinking. Contrary to folk tales, getting sick is not from mixing drinks or drinking on an empty stomach, it is because specialized poison control cells in your brain detect danger -- too much alcohol -- and send a signal to your stomach to vomit. This is the brain's way of dealing with poisoning. Vomiting is an attempt to eliminate any unabsorbed alcohol. The logic is, if you can prevent any alcohol that's still in the stomach from getting into the blood supply, it may save your life. Eating before you drink will slow down the speed of intoxication but it is no guarantee that you won't get sick or die if you consume enough alcohol.
Whereas some people only vomit when they have consumed too much alcohol, other people just fall asleep (with or without vomiting) after they have consumed too much alcohol. In these people, death can follow in one of two ways: you may fall into a deep sleep and vomit while sleeping. What's the result? You choke on your own vomit because you are too intoxicated to wake up and clear out your airway. In other instances, you simply fall asleep and never wake up, because the concentration of alcohol is so high that the areas of your brain controlling life functions are so depressed that they stop functioning and so do you. “

Alcohol is one of the most popular drugs to overdose on.
Go to the Poison Control web site for the stats…..
Where in God's name did you read that there is no such thing as alcohol poisoning, and why on earth did you believe it? Use your head dude…..

BUMP!
I seriously need this info guys. I didn't mean to say overdose stats just deaths, because something like tobacco doesn't kill half a million a year by OD!

I didnt read it anywhere Quack, I thought it up on my own. Every time I feel ive drank too much I puke, then BAM I feel fine. If my stomach hurts from drinking and I cant puke, I just pull the Ol bulemia trick and make myself puke, then again, Im fine. All they do when you go to the hospital for it is pump your stomach which is just a fancy way of puking. I know their is alcohol poisoning, but if you are smart, you can take care of it yourself without making a big scene of having to go to the hospital...

Vomiting ain't gunna do dick except rid your body of it's stomache contents.. the alcohol that is affecting you is in your bloodstreem, and no amount of iced-tea or vomiting will do anything about it..+

Check out http://www.google.com. Do a search
on "drug overdose statistics". That should
give you a good starting point. Even if
you've already seen a site, check it again
for useful links. I've found a few real gems
while writing papers for school.

I think you're going to have to search anti-drug sites for stats... NIDA and the other government health / anti-drug groups...

Learn to use a search engine. For instance, do a google search on:
drug related hospital admission statistics 2000 deaths
That alone will brovide you with a good starting point.

These things change SO MUCH from year to year, you really need to be current...

Lots of informed opinions on this thread, sheesh. Alcohol doesn't make you puke because your body thinks it is poisonous. If you drink enough to puke, the vomiting usually happens because the cerebellum (balance) is depressed to the point that you can't walk straight, the room starts spinning, etc. and you puke. Some people never get sick and puke. My roommate for example drank a fifth (750ml) of Bacardi Limon in 3 hours. That is about 15 shots. But he didn't get sick, bastard. Other people can have just a drink and get sick.
Also, opiates stimulate one of the vomiting centers of your brain and can make you puke. But it isn't an indication that you are poisoning yourself.
And to answer the original question, try www.emedicine.com. Search for a particular drug, it will give you toxicity treatment info and last years statistics of how many trips to the ER it caused and how many of those resulted in death.

No, Abra, you're dumb. You don't puke because you get dizzy, although that can be a contributing factor. You puke because your body is trying to react to the poison you have consumed. Stop trying to act smart with fancy words like cerebellum and get your fucking facts straight.
