Covid-19 Outbreak of new SARS-like coronavirus (Covid-19)

PS: Me being someone who could honestly be accused of "running a script when prompted" would have anyone who knows me asking about the accuser's mental health.
Some of my most intelligent friends act in the same fashion. It almost seems that people who are educated are more susceptible to this kind of behavior.
I think it's because they think that they're so much smarter than most other people so they're willing to put their trust and faith into others who they perceive as much more intelligent than themselves.

Alot of my friends and co-workers are determined that this all started by eating bats at a Chinese wet-market. I don't really believe this theory.
I am almost certain that it originated from the virus lab in Wuhan.

^So what?

sunrise, you might want to look who funds the Atlantic Council and perhaps look at their track record before getting to far along the bash RT path. Neither supporting or criticising RT, but sometimes RT are the only ones telling the other side of a story. Atlantic alliance is a propaganda mouthpeice for whom?

Coronavirus testing needs to triple before the U.S. can reopen, experts say

By Keith Collins | New York Times | 17 April 2020

As some governors consider easing social distancing restrictions, new estimates by researchers at Harvard University suggest that the United States cannot safely reopen unless it conducts more than three times the number of coronavirus tests it is currently administering over the next month.

An average of 146,000 people per day have been tested for the coronavirus nationally so far this month, according to the COVID Tracking Project, which on Friday reported 3.6 million total tests across the country. To reopen the United States by mid-May, the number of daily tests performed between now and then should be 500,000 to 700,000, according to the Harvard estimates.

That level of testing is necessary to identify the majority of people who are infected and isolate them from people who are healthy, according to the researchers. About 20 percent of those tested so far were positive for the virus, a rate that the researchers say is too high.

“If you have a very high positive rate, it means that there are probably a good number of people out there who have the disease who you haven’t tested,” said Ashish Jha, the director of the Harvard Global Health Institute. “You want to drive the positive rate down, because the fundamental element of keeping our economy open is making sure you’re identifying as many infected people as possible and isolating them.”

The researchers said that expanded testing could reduce the rate to 10 percent, which is the maximum rate recommended by the World Health Organization. In Germany, that number is 7 percent, and in South Korea, it is closer to 3 percent.

There is variation in the rate of testing among states, but most need to administer more tests to get to the level the researchers suggest — a minimum of about 152 tests per 100,000 people.

Testing levels shown are a 7-day moving average. Among states, reporting methods and regularity can vary. Some decreases in testing can be because of a gap in reporting. Only places with consistent and reliable data from the COVID Tracking Project are included. The District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are among them.

In most states, people who had severe symptoms, worked in health facilities or were otherwise hospitalized were given priority for testing. The goal of the testing level recommended by the researchers would be to test nearly everyone who has mild or severe flulike symptoms, and an average of 10 contacts for each person who tests positive for the virus.

A shortage of test kits and technical flaws in the United States significantly delayed more widespread testing of the virus, letting it spread undetected for weeks. With more than 695,000 cases as of Friday, the country has the highest number of known cases in the world.

Health experts said that if the U.S. had tested earlier and more, the outbreak would have been better contained. Caitlin Rivers, an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said that since that did not happen and the virus spread rapidly, it has made sense to prioritize testing for those in hospitals in recent weeks.

“It does make sense, given constraints, to focus on people with severe illness, because you need that information to guide their care,” Dr. Rivers said.

In mid-May, however, when the researchers estimate infections will have subsided somewhat and states are looking to reopen their economies, Dr. Jha believes vastly expanded testing will be crucial.

“I want to be able to identify everybody who is even mildly symptomatic,” he said. “So when I wake up one morning and have a sore throat and a fever, I should be able to go get tested. And then I want to be able to test all of my contacts if I turn out to be positive, so that I can do the test, trace and isolate strategy that’s so critical to allowing us to open up and stay open.”

New Jersey currently has the highest positive rate among all states — about half of the 157,000 coronavirus tests that it has conducted so far have come back positive. That suggests that many of the people in the state who have the coronavirus have not been tested.

The state’s testing progress has been hindered by setbacks, including long lines at testing facilities and a shortage of health care workers and testing swabs.

Christopher Neuwirth, an assistant commissioner at New Jersey’s Health Department, said the state’s lag in testing could also indicate that fewer people are trying to get tested.

“In the days and weeks up until testing was available, there was a huge pent-up demand,” Mr. Neuwirth said. After that, he said, the public became more aware of the criteria for testing. “People really paid attention and really heard the messaging that you have to be symptomatic.”

"That messaging will have to be reversed,"
Dr. Jha said, "once testing is expanded."

We need to switch from saying to people, "if you’re not feeling super sick, don’t come and stay at home," to "if you have any symptoms, you need to come in to get tested right away,” he said.

Brazilians are fortunate people, our president, for instance, it is one of the leaders in the world who is denying the pandemic "it is a flu". It is hard to believe but yesterday the health minister was substituted on account of his support of the lockdown measures, the economy is more important than lives, that's what capitalism means.

We have here states having 5 millions of residents and 50 ICUs, cities with 200 000 people without ICUs...

In order to save us, a $ 120 stimulus check has been sent to a restrict parcel of the population (informal workers, unemployed, and so on)

At least, and pay attention to this fact ladies and gentlemen, AT LEAST, we have sunny beaches and naked women everywhere (suck this masturbation lovers from the US/Europe)

Wait

Shit, the beaches are closed and the women have corona

HELP ME PLEASE

@JGrimezHonestly. Who the fuck is talking about "western media"? I sure as hell wasn't.

I simply said that RT is Russian state propaganda. Which is a fact. I provided sources for this assertion. All you're doing is misrepresenting what I said and assigning me assumed beliefs.

You straight away assumed that I get my information from US sources. I'm not sure where you got this idea. I don't.

If you must know, I get most of my news from the following, most of which are state-funded: CBC, BBC, DW, CT24, Channel 4, CTV.
For clarity: the CBC is only partially state-funded as they get a significant portion of their income from selling ads on their TV channels. The radio stations are ad-free though.
If you want to claim that any of the state-funded ones I mentioned above are state propaganda, then go ahead. Even if that were the case it doesn't negate the fact that RT is Russian state propaganda.

You can't refute an assertion by not addressing it and instead deflecting onto someone else, with assumed positions no less!

Where the fuck did you get this idea that you are the fount of wisdom and knowledge when you can't even refute an assertion properly?

Your insinuation about me being a Russophobe is insulting. One of my best mates is a Russian immigrant to Canada. He'd laugh in your face with your denials about RT being state propaganda.

Then you continue with your assumption that I'm in any way "educated". Yeah, sure, I graduated secondary, with French honours, but I dropped out of university....twice....and college another time.

I did pick up some skills in my short-lived university attempt though: critical thinking skills. Something you sorely lack. Maybe there's a course on Critical Thinking and Logic on Coursera.

Please don't bother responding to this. I've wasted enough time talking to a wall.

...in fact, my Russian mate wouldn't stop at laughing in your face....he'd then go on at length about why you're a fool for refusing to believe that RT is state propaganda. He'd then inform you about how things in Russia actually work.

Anyway, seriously, go learn how to refute an assertion and how to make one backed up by relevant sources; stop making assumptions and insinuations based in ignorance; and go teach yourself how to think critically, because right now you're just pretending.

One key thing to understand about the deadliness of the coronavirus is how it infects
the body and how our body responds to fight it.

Experts warn covid-19 attacks much more than the lungs

By Adam Miller | CBC Health | 17 April 2020

Understanding how COVID-19 attacks the human body is essential to developing an effective treatment or vaccine to stop the global pandemic — but there's still so much we don't know about how it can kill us.

As researchers around the world race to understand the illness, they are compiling and sharing their early observations of patients hit by a virus that has sickened more than two million people. The findings are preliminary, but they can help point researchers in the right directions.

They have seen that in severe cases, COVID-19 invades our respiratory cells and triggers an immune system response that targets those infected cells, destroys lung tissue and ultimately clogs our airways, cutting off our oxygen supply.

That's when organ failure can also occur, causing severe damage to the kidneys, liver and heart, similar to other infections like sepsis.

But they will look to determine whether the virus is targeting and shutting down organs in a new way or just behaving like other infections that cause such common complications.

Why COVID-19 can be so deadly

One key thing to understand about the deadliness of the coronavirus is how it infects the body and how our body responds to fight it.

Cytokines are small molecules released by the immune system that travel throughout the body to co-ordinate an immune response against an infection or injury — even with something as mild as a common fever.

But if the immune system overproduces them in response to the infection, they can cause "cytokine storms" that can rampage through the bloodstream and severely damage the body.

Dr. Douglas Fraser, an ICU doctor at London Health Sciences Centre and a researcher at Western University in London, Ont., has been studying that exaggerated immune response by collecting blood from critically ill COVID-19 patients in an effort to find new ways to treat the disease.

"The immune response to this particular disease is very different than what we've seen in other infected patients that end up in the ICU," he said. "It's a unique response and it's going to require unique therapies."

Fraser said his research shows there are different types of cytokines released in the body at unusual times and levels in response to COVID-19 compared with those that are typically found in critically ill patients from more common diseases.

"What we're seeing seems to be occurring in all of the very sick patients: those who are requiring the ICU admissions, those who are requiring assistance with their breathing and those that are ultimately dying," he said.

Kidneys tied to severe complications

Kidney infection was an "important complication" in a preliminary publication of a recent observational study of 287 COVID-19 patients in China, which found almost one in five had some stage of sudden or "acute" kidney infection — putting them at "substantially higher" risk of death.

While it's not yet known what rate of Canadian COVID-19 patients have acute kidney infections, the majority occur in severely ill patients, said Dr. Jeffrey Perl, a nephrologist at St Michael's Hospital in Toronto and an assistant medical professor at the University of Toronto.

"As people's blood pressure gets very low from a very massive, overwhelming inflammatory immune response, the kidneys are starved of blood," he said, adding that "it can often lead to the need for a dialysis machine to clean the patient's blood."

To give an idea of how serious a complication it can be, Perl said "the mortality rate for patients who had developed acute kidney injury from SARS in 2003 was 92 per cent, compared to just eight per cent in those who didn't."

Maria Tanta, left has her temperature checked by nurse Callie Dunne.

"Chronic kidney patients are also at higher risk of death with COVID-19 compared to those without pre-existing conditions who are otherwise well,"
he added.

"We're very worried about those patients getting a COVID-19 infection," he said. "Similar to the elderly population that we're very concerned about, I would consider these patients another high-risk group."

Virus may 'directly' target the heart

One essential organ that may be at direct risk from the virus is the heart.

A cohort study published in JAMA found almost 20 per cent of 416 hospitalized COVID-19 patients in China had heart damage during hospitalization, putting them at a higher risk for death.

While recent research from the American College of Cardiology found arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, in 16 per cent of patients and acute cardiac injury in 7.2 per cent.

"There's the possibility and the likelihood that some of the virus might actually get taken directly up into the heart muscle cells and cause that heart injury," said Dr. Patrick Lawler, a cardiologist and clinician scientist at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre in Toronto.

"We hear anecdotes from other people that have had a little bit more experience, unfortunately, with this that really are consistent with the heart suddenly starting to become weak."

An observational study of 187 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 published in the New England Journal of Medicine last month found high levels of troponin, which can indicate problems with the heart, in 28 per cent of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Wuhan, China, which concluded they were at risk of "much higher mortality."

wuhan.png

Emerging research shows the heart may be at direct risk from the virus. One study
found almost 20 per cent of 416 patients had cardiac issues.

Lawler said the outcomes for COVID-19 patients with cardiac issues are "dramatically worse," and even though the virus enters through the respiratory system, it can take root in other areas of the body.

"The heart is really a critical, critical part of what determines whether or not patients are going to recover from this or not," he said.

Can it help us find a cure?

Lawler is currently looking at the use of blood thinners as a possible treatment for COVID-19 patients, which may prevent the virus from binding to ACE2 receptors — enzymes found in cells throughout the human body that can act as an entryway for coronaviruses.

He said research suggests blood clots may play a role in organ failure in critically ill patients, so different doses of anticoagulants may prevent that from happening.

Fraser is also using his research on the "cytokine storm" immune response to COVID-19 to find "targets" to further efforts toward an effective treatment.

He said there could be multiple components to why different people are susceptible to the virus that range from genetics, to pre-existing conditions to age.

"Once we have an understanding of what's going on, we can develop therapies, we can develop vaccines," he said.

"Then we can get back to a normal life."

Corona virus vaccine might be impossible some people have now been reinfected 3 times and its showing no signs of giving them immunity. the immunity fades within a week this virus is going to get really bad. Is it possible we might see a repeat of the mass scale deaths of the spanish flu when the second wave comes?

Are you on the same defunct thought track as our friend JGrimez, by chance?

I wasn't defending any organisation, I was pointing out a fact.

I don't see what the Atlantic Council have to do with whether or not RT is Russian state propaganda.

Right, nothing at all.

No, for real...where did the Atlantic Council even come from?

All I said is that RT is Russian state propaganda.

Nobody was talking about the Atlantic Council.

This weird deflection displayed by yourself and JGrimez is quite telling.

You quoted Ben Nimmo as proof, Ben nimmo works for the Atlantic Council. Clearly you didn't even look at the so called proof you posted. ergo you are a moron, End of discussion.
From Wikipedia: "RT (formerly Russia Today) is a Russian government-funded international television network.[5] [6]".

Sources for the above being:

Terrible! That’s why I was warning @Painful One not to go out into a crowd trying to protest. This thing is serious. Doctors haven’t figured out how long immunity lasts or if there’s really any immunity at all.

Fuck protesting and endangering your life and others. People need to listen to the “stay home” order until they can come up with a cure for this shitshow of a virus.

reinfected 3 times,That's quite a claim to make, is this cutting edge antipodean science or Kiwi that is being kept from the rest of the world?

World is still waiting for NZ to nuke China as you were calling for earlier, the world could do with some entertainment and distraction for a few hours, because that is how long NZ would last.
I am sick and tired of people beating on China, there are greater numbers of good people in China than there are in NZ. Simple math tells you that. The corollary is that there are also more bad people in China than NZ. Logically therefore NZ should be nuked before China because that would result in the loss of the fewest good people.

nCoV seems to be capable of causing people to lose their minds before they even contact the virus.

if there is no immunity how do people not just die everytime? does the virus get bored and decide not to do its thing any more? engage brains people. Blood borne antibodies, humoral immunity is not the only thing that gives immunity, more importantly antibodies really really struggle to clear or destroy infected cells, almost like there is some other part of the adaptive immune system (let's call this cell mediated immunity)

This coronavirus is nothing special, it is not a weapon, it is not virus X. If the immune sytem was as weak and maladaptive as some of the deranged thought processes I have seen here recently, humans and most likely all mammals would have been wiped out long ago.

Never claimed I wasn't. In fact......I think I'd be the first to agree with that assessment. I have a lifetime of proof in that regard. Anecdotal, of course. ;)

so you now understand why I was talking about the Atlantic Council? now answer me this, who funds the Atlantic Council? who pays the piper in Ben Nimmos case?

WHO warning: No evidence that antibody tests can show coronavirus immunity

"Nobody is sure whether someone with antibodies is fully protected against having the disease or being exposed again," he said.

"Plus some of the tests have issues with sensitivity," he added. "They may give a false negative result."

Earlier this week, WHO officials said not all people who recover from the coronavirus have the antibodies to fight a second infection, raising concern that patients may not develop immunity after surviving Covid-19.

"With regards to recovery and then reinfection, I believe we do not have the answers to that. That is an unknown," Ryan said Monday.

Saying “the Coronavirus is nothing special” is not being realistic at all. Doctors haven’t figured it out yet. Immunity is not guaranteed.

The rest of the article is here:

From RT:
RT is an autonomous, non-profit organization that is publicly financed from the budget of the Russian Federation.

From The Atlantic Council:
The Atlantic Council enjoys a diversified donor base helping to ensure our credibility, integrity and sustainability. To protect our independence and reputation and to ensure we are in compliance with the Foreign Agents Registration Act, we have established a process, approved by the Nominating and Governance Committee of the board of directors, to review any potential government funding and to obtain authorization to negotiate financing with a government or state-controlled entity.

A bit murkier. Thanks for calling that out. I should have just used RT as the source for who funds the RT from the beginning. Fucking amateur mistake. ;)

RT is Russian state propaganda, @JGrimez....it's about as trustworthy as my ex. ;)

Right up his alley. As if everybody doesn't already know. Everything he posts is aimed at subverting, sabotaging and misinforming Americans on this site. Anybody that has watched his posting for any significant time would be blind not to see the truth. I'm not the only one on this site that thinks so... Now CEPS is just his blizzard of bizzare conspiracy rants, defense of Trump, vitrol towards America's former policies and tumbleweeds.

Every now and again newer and less time suavy members come along to debate him but all of the more astute members have gotten tired of the charade. I warn everyone to pay close attention to everything he says and closely examine the messages. His intentions and cover are not all they appear to be.

Do not be led by fear, anger, discord. or disharmony during these trying times my friends. Important days are ahead. United we stand; divided we fall. The American government though imperfect has not been our enemy. Time and time again his posts are aimed at causing mistrust and discord amongst Americans, while defending long standing adversarial countries. I plead for everyone to wake up because the enemy is not liberal media but the misinformation and rebel rousing that has infiltrated our social media....
