I was a child during the SARS outbreak but I remember it clearly. Toronto was one of the hardest-hit cities outside of China. The Rolling Stones even came and played a benefit concert there. I really hope that this one isn't as bad, or at least that health authorities have a better idea of how to contain it this time around.

Scary stuff.
South Korea, Japan, and the US have cases, amongst other places

So far it looks less lethal than SARS, but the apparent spread, especially close to the Chinese New Year, is troubling.

Tomorrow 01/22 the WHO will decide if it is an emergency

Niiiiiice.

Just found a Reddit link pertaining to the start of the outbreak

The food market at the centre of the outbreak admits to selling live koalas, snakes, rats, and wolves.

Not sure if it pertains to the spread of the virus but I notice it's an absolute shit year for koalas already.

Out of the fires and into the frying pans....

I even have your batsoup recipe!

It'd be funnier if there'd be no deaths, but yeah, what can you do. Sorry, gross.

Listen, there is always a silver lining, to these frightening and tragic stories - consider how now this imbues:

  • Reason for irrational and free-floating anxiety/depression/etc (Check!)
  • Reason to justify dissociation from people, society and anything involving engaging in the public domain (Check!)
  • Reason to neurotically fix on the over-population/breeding/globalization or, any other idea that gives a nice clean solution to blame all the world's problems on (Check!)
  • Reason to quit work and confidently tell your boss that you are protecting yourself from the impending apocalypse/bio wars/anything that validates a paranoid state of mind (Check!)
  • Reason to blame China/the Chinese for EVERYTHING bad that happens! (Check!)
  • Reasons to never again go out in public (Check!)
  • Reasons why never being Batman is a good thing (Check!)
  • Reason for a god that hangs out at farmers' markets and uses vengeful magic, to destroy humanity!
🧐

I read that with my surgical mask on like your typical neurotic, paranoid, depressed individual overly concerned about the overpopulation and resultant rampant running mutating viruses in asian and western countries in particular. I also believe being batman is a state of mind, soup is not worth losing your pinky toe over, it's a valuable appendage.

:D @ BM, for sho. Nothing is worth losing a toe over; be it soup, whiskey, the mafia, the darknet or, indeed gangrene - fuck all those things.

Also, as a proud neurotic, I think all the surgical masks are both produced and stored in Asia - so basically we are screwed - the Chinese will take over and we will all die from respiratory complications and not have the lung capacity to even express our ire; oh wait, sorry! I forgot that that is what most pop social media has done to us already and insidiously, by steering the collective outrage toward distraction, from relevant social issues...my bad! :/

I think Batman has caught on with everyone adopting tight pants, however, the ideology and any motivation for ideas outside of film, has yielded little - maybe I can be proved wrong? Sonic Hedgehog, however. ;)

World Health Organization statement- mixed views, not declared a public emergency but too early to define. They will reconvene in some amount of time.

Story is behind a paywall so I’m posting the link and text.

Coronavirus Death Toll Rises in China as U.S. Reports Second Case

New U.S. case involves a Chicago woman who traveled to China last month and returned on Jan. 13.

The tally of deaths and infections from the spread of the new coronavirus mounted in China on Friday—with authorities canceling large public gatherings and locking down more cities—as the second U.S. case of the virus was confirmed.

The number of infections had risen to at least 881 confirmed cases, China’s state-run broadcaster China Central Television reported Friday evening, adding more than 300 new cases to the previous day’s official count. The official death count ticked higher to 26. Chinese officials have shut down parts of the Great Wall and canceled Lunar New Year events as part of efforts to halt the spread of the respiratory virus.

The U.S. case involves a woman in her 60s from Chicago who had traveled to the Central Chinese city of Wuhan, where the outbreak began, in late December and returned to the U.S. on Jan. 13, said Allison Arwady, Chicago’s health commissioner. The woman has been isolated in a hospital and is doing well, Dr. Arwady said.

A man in his 30s in Washington state, who had traveled to Wuhan, previously was diagnosed with the virus, according to health officials.

Officials at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they expected the virus would spread to more people in the U.S. and elsewhere around the world.

Singapore said it had two new confirmed coronavirus cases, bringing the total number there to three. All are residents of Wuhan. They were on visits to Singapore over the weeklong Lunar New Year holiday. Overall, Singaporean authorities have identified 28 suspected cases of the coronavirus; all but two of them had recently traveled to China.

Singapore’s Ministry of Health said it believes more imported cases of the disease will emerge, given its high volume of overseas travelers. Thailand, another popular destination for Chinese tourists, also has three confirmed cases.

The coronavirus has already spread to several other countries, including South Korea and Japan. Taiwan’s health ministry confirmed two more cases on Friday, bringing the separately governed island’s tally to three.

The U.S., Hong Kong and Macau, special regions of China, have each confirmed two cases. Vietnam also reported its first two cases Thursday evening, according to the country’s health ministry.

The Wuhan virus belongs to a family of respiratory viruses that can be spread by coughing, kissing or making contact with saliva. Often, these coronaviruses simply cause common colds. But others have been more serious, even deadly.

Health officials believe that the incubation period for the virus is around 14 days, meaning it could take roughly two weeks for someone infected with the virus to develop symptoms. People are most likely not contagious before symptoms develop, health officials said.

In the U.S., the CDC said it has been investigating whether 63 patients from 22 states have been infected with the virus. Only the two have tested positive so far, while eleven were negative.

U.S. authorities have been screening international travelers arriving at five major airports for fevers and other symptoms of an infection, while alerting hospitals to take measures to screen people who have traveled to Wuhan.

The CDC said that it is currently re-evaluating the screening process. So far, over 2,000 people coming into the U.S. have been screened from roughly 200 flights.

The Chicago woman who was infected didn’t show symptoms until a few days after returning to the U.S., Dr. Arwady said. After learning about the woman’s trip, her doctor took steps to prevent further spread, including sending the woman to a hospital with infection control.

Health authorities are monitoring the woman’s close contacts, who haven’t shown any signs of infections, Dr. Arwady said.

Dr. Arwady expressed doubt the woman transmitted the virus since she didn’t have symptoms while flying—and after returning to the U.S., didn’t take public transportation or attend any large gatherings, In addition, she didn’t have long, close contact with anyone outside her home, Dr. Arwady added.

In China’s response to the rapid spread of the disease, authorities have halted public transportation out of several cities in Hubei province, which is where the city of Wuhan is located and where the vast majority of the cases have been identified. On Thursday morning, local officials locked down Wuhan, the provincial capital and major transportation hub that is home to 11 million people. Outbound flights and trains were canceled and roads leading out of the city were blocked.

Within a day, at least 10 other cities in Hubei had said they would also suspend public transportation, according to the Communist Party’s flagship newspaper, People’s Daily. Several more cities imposed restrictions Friday on human movement, including Jingzhou—a city of 6.6 million people—which banned buses, cars and ferries from leaving. It set up body temperature checkpoints at stations and highways around the city.

2 confirmed cases in the USA now, Chicago is next, put it on lockdown like they tried to do in Wuhan and the rest of China. It just seems like the flu really, not even an agressive strain? So far anyways, ~4000 infected and 26 dead atm. Heard on the news 2 confirmed cases in France as well, great.

@Asclepius I don't trust hedgehogs either, look at this one I caught chomping on a sick bird that dropped dead out of the tree. That thing is harboring some serious diseases.

I am in Toronto and never panicked through sars so won't now
After Chinese new year and all the students coming back will not be good
Canada won't stop flights though, our government doesn't protect it's citizens

lol lockdown time:

4 confirmed in Australia:

And this was the funniest I saw yesterday, could go in the conspiracy thread because it's just an internet anon post, but it still was worth mentioning here really, for the lulz:
The virus that is currently spreading only has similarities with the Betacoronaviruses that affect bats and other mammals only help in identifying the virus. It is a seperate strain not found before, a likely contender to originate from laboratories.
lol 😦

i know wtf's going on !
i'm trying to ignore it so it will go away.

like every five years they start this stuff.

viruses doom . shortages of vaccinations.

the only real bad one was the swine flu.

and then it was over too.

Everyone's so freaking out AGAIN.

haven't run across anyone with it YET.
and hopefully won't.

prayers and positive outcomes to All.

ickyness yuk.

everyone isn't sure wether or not to be hysterical YET.

The fatality rate (it varies a lot, particularly with age and possibly strain) for SARS (another coronavirus) was about 10%, which is quite high.
This coronavirus seems to be more contagious but less severe, but it’s early days.

Here are some opinions from public health experts;
