I've read fresh is better than dried. I'm growing some poppies and want to use the seeds for cooking aswell. I know you kind of need to let them dry in the plant to use them. Can you just cut them off at the stem and dry them while green? Are they gonna lose alkaloids drying or is it a biological process that turns the morph to cod, which would be stopped by chopping them? Thanks.

Tldr: can you dry green poppies and they be as potent as before dried? Do you just want to avoid them browning on the stalk?
 
Yeah, do not allow them to dry while on the plant

You want to cut them around a week or two after the petals fall off. Sometimes longer in some cases.

When squeezing the pod between two fingers (gently), it should feel very firm, not springy. The pods should feel hard and solid. Stop watering a few days before finally cutting them. Dry them with a fan (this can take a long time though). I usually dry them with a food dehydrator, on the lowest temp setting (which is like 90 degrees).

Man I should really finish my book on this subject. There really is no book out there that is extremely detailed. And all books on the subject are old, and lack alot of important details

Thank you! So cutting them stops the morphine to codeine conversion and green dry will be as strong/close by volume as fresh?
