I can't seem to tolerate any opioid stronger than norco. My doctor finally let me try oxycodone and I thought I was dying. I have savage pain from transverse myelitis or inflammation of the spinal cord. The oxy made me nauseous and shaky and stupid. Question...why TF didn't my doctor discuss weaning me off gabapentin, baclofen, and clonazepam?? You can't take all those meds together! No wonder I felt so sick. I'm thinking that he wasn't aware of the dangers of mixing those meds and that's scary too. He should know this, yes? So I went back to norco but it doesn't work anymore. I want to try an oxy again but I don't know how long I should wait after a norco.

You can take the Oxycodone 4 hours after you took the norco, in fact they're so alike you could take them together.

Hey @TessaBella :)

I'm sorry to hear you're dealing with what I assume is a very uncomfortable situation. What would be helpful for me would be a little more information regarding your current intake. You mentioned Gabapentin (Neurontin), Clonazepam (Klonopin) and Baclofen. Are you currently taking these drugs and if so, what are the dosages and how long have you been taking each? Do any of these auxiliary medications have a positive impact on your pain or more generally, your quality of life?

For those who are experiencing pain, I would tend to recommend using something like Gabapentin if it actually helped. The synergy that is created by the combination of these two drugs can lead to lower dosages for each medication respectively. In this world, both from a biological sense (you want to keep your tolerance low) and a political sense (Opioids are not easy to obtain, hence lower dosages directly correlate to an easier time acquiring the medication on a chronic basis).

There are other Opioids that you can try besides Oxycodone. I understand this is an easy jump for prescribers to make, but there is not reason why you couldn't try something like Morphine, Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) or what have you. If you are in need of something stronger than Hydrocodone, you can also just pursue a higher-dose version of Hydrocodone. For instance, they do have extended-release Hydrocodone products that feature higher dosages per unit and cut out the APAP (Paracetamol) - (Tylenol).

As @evo4ever has said, you don't have to wait for any specific reason like, "these drugs are dangerous when combined", just wait the normal amount of time you would wait in between your Hydrocodone dosing and try again with the Oxycodone

Can I please ask, what are the worst symptoms that you experience when you're taking these Opioids? Nausea? If so, there are ways of remediating these symptoms that are not extreme or difficult to acquire. Do you use Cannabis? Are you open to using Cannabis? I throw this at every pain patient I encounter here on the forums. Cannabis is an awesome medication for pain, nausea and frankly, lots of other shit. Cannabis can enable you to use a lower total dose of Opioids and can also help mitigate some of the negative side effects of Opioids like the aforementioned nausea.

Get back to me with a little more information and I will do my best to help you out.

That is quiet the polypharmacy cocktail. Additional sedatives on-top of an opioid like oxycodone absolutely increases the likelihood of encountering opioid specific side effects.

Having said that, some people just don't tolerate potent opioids very well. My wife and some friends find anything stronger then codeine absolutely intolerable. Nausea, dizziness, insomnia, etc.

If it's nausea that's your primary concern, concurrent use of ondanestron is worth a shot. It's a very strong (and extremely well tolerated) anti-nausea drug. It's not psychoactive either which is useful in your case as you won't be adding onto your sedative load.

Usually opioid side effects improve after a week or so, so if you will be in Oxycodone long term it might be worth just waiting it out

Take some ginger tea or candy for the nausea . Pain doctors have been giving that combo for decades. Its safe for most for pain if taken in the correct dosages.
