So recently I have had cause to wonder if there is any benifit that benzos provide that is not provided by opiates? Opiates have damn good anxiolytic properties, sedative properties etc.. They are ranked by experts as less reinforcing (heroin vs. valium specifically Franklin, D. "Hooked: Not everyone becomes addicted. How come?" Health 1990, 4, 3 8) . Benzos induce long term and acute memoery imparment and cognitive deficits. Acute benzo withdrawal can be fatal and brain damaging, acute opiate withdrawal doesn't in general seem to be either...or at least to a much lesser extent.
Most importantly opiates simply feel better to be on while at the same time letting people operate more effectively than if they had been on benzos.
Personally I have found codeine to be much more effective at releiving anxiety than 2mg alprazolam and yet it is much easier to stop a daily 400mg codeine for about a month habit than it is to stop my alprazolam.
Damn laws suck.
 
sleeeeeeeeeeeep, really, opiates are fun drugs, benzos are considered more of a tool for me. I use them on comedowns, when i can't sleep, etc. I don't find the high that spectacular. Opiates on the other hands, are beautiful, just can't go to sleep on them, can nod off etc, just can't actually sleep.
 
Can't sleep or don't want to try? I find that if I decide to go lie down on opiates I fall asleep as easily as I do on benzos. When I am high though I don't feel I need sleep no matter how sleepy I feel (sleepiness just isn't bad).
 
I don't know, I'm not a very experienced opiate or benzo individual in general, but I've prefered the benzos that I've had in the past.
I think this is possibly because there is a period of 'getting used to opiates' that I rarely have gotten past. It took me a while to take to percocet. but now I'm completely a fan. Probably mostly the naseua, I guess. But I guess, also in general, I don't like downers.
klonopin is probably the weakest benzo, but I like it's subtleness. I'm a huge fan.
You know, but again, I've not had any REAL experience with either of the classes. I would like to. We'll see...
I've recently started to get klonopin for anxiety that I don't have. I'll work my way up, but it won't be for a while.
and i really should get into opiates. I usually opt for something speedy, however. and I don't have a cheap direct connection thus far. I've snorted heroin on occasion but am waiting for the day that I can shoot it.
But if about 10mgs of oxycodone get me a bit queasy...
well, you know, I'll just have to get used to it.
 
Nausea? That could be one (small-ish) issue.
Also, the sleeping issue. I can't sleep on opiates normally, at least not at therapeutic doses (though they make me drowsy).
Personally, I find that benzos are more effective for anxiety than opiates, however I realize that many would disagree.
All in all, it's a good question...unfortunately many of this country's laws and practices are rather arbitrary.
Btw, this thread would probably be better suited to Health...

Can't sleep at all on opiates. Nada. I may nod off occasionally, and have fucked up wake-dreams, but no sleep. Gets old after a while. In fact, I'm trying to taper now, and I've found that when I don't get enough, I'm dead tired- run-down tired. I have to do some just as a pick me up...

i also though i couldnt sleep on opiates but then i just tried lying in the bed a bit longer all relaxed, feeling great and sleep always came. but i admit it takes longer..
 
BENZos are better for anxiety i believe...the BENZos make me too relaxed and i dont like that too much...
i have a hard time a very hard, if not impossible time sleeping while under INFL of OPIATES..there are times im tired as hell trying to take a nap and its impossible cuz of the Opiates that are in my system...i do get very odd dreamlike states which i dont care for more anymore..
OPIATES are worlds beyind Benzos as far as REC purposes go./.i dont see how people can like Benzos for getting "high" because they dont really produce much of a high IMO...they make u really drowsy and relaxed..
 
I use benzos EXCLUSIVELY for all drug comedowns/binges. There's nothing better than popping some valium, halcion, pins whatever when withdrawing from opiates and amps especially.
Sometimes a little benzo is good with shrooms or amphetamines.
Opiates, for some, are not pleasant the first few times they do them. Once you get past that beginning phase, there's no turning back. Opiates are a way of life. I don't know where I'd be without them.

You're absolutely right on that. I have never had a problem quitting cold-turkey from codeine. Never an ache or pain(4 months straight of 300-400mg/day). Other opiates are a diff story!!! I abused halcion(triazolam) very badly and that was the worst period of my life. Amnesia and insomnia suck!

I have the same viewpoint with benzos as well. The high just isn't that fun to me if it isn't with alcohol. I prefer xanax for speed adn coke comedowns.
Opiates however are my favorite drugs. They aren't harsh on the body, and feel absolutley wonderful.
 
I feel they go hand in hand... Opiates do produce a much better "buzz". But the most I can do with a high dose of opiates is either type messages on this damn forum or get the high score on Tony Hawk.....
However, I like to start the day off with a low dose of benzos, usually 0.5mgs of klonopin and progress through my day eating 1 -2 more mgs....but as night falls the opiates begin to be ingested..... damn, its 11pm now - I got 2 mgs of benzos in me and I'm working on my second bag of dope....."god I love Chems"!!!!
 
Benzos are great for relieving anxiety or taking the edge off of a psychedelic expereince. They are great for coming down, hangovers, etc... But, I agree they are more of a tool than a rec. drug. Nothing beats a nice opiate high! The best!!
 
I think they're both great but it mainly depends on what I'm using them for. If Im just bumming around my apartment with a few friends than Id go with a good dose of benzos. Also great for long flights or anything where you just want to pass time.
Opiates however can make almost anything fun and I don't get that "What the fuck did I do last night?" feeling.
Running errands(sp?) Long road trip? Family reunion? Always twice the fun on a good 40mg oxy.
While I love the high (high, for lack of a better term) on benzos it seems the only thing I can do is embarass myself and have my friends peel me off the couch to tell me what I did the next morning. On the other hand, opiates make me much more sociable and motivated.
note: I just realized this post was concerning the effects of benzos and opiates on anxiety. I am prescribed xanax (.5mg) and taking it regularly does help a lot. However when I am the most stressed out after work or classes I find a good dose of oxy or hydrocodone to be the most effective. Opiates put me in a positive frame of mind and give me the ability to work through my problems and solve them in a productive manner.
Edit: I just started my summer vacation by slapping on a fentanyl patch so please excuse my bad grammar and sentence structure.

Eh... opiates make you feel much better than benzos. Benzos can't even compare in that aspect.
Maybe benzos provide some "benefits" that opiates do not possess, but who cares? Who the hell would say benzos are more fun? Only a fucking pinko commie bastard, that's who.

um, no comparison, why is this even a topic??? hands down BENZOS, no really opiates are king. Opiates cure my anxiety better than most benzos!

I like to take both. But to be perfectly honest with you opiates are way better then benzo's. But there two entirely different highs. Benzo's are best for comming down off of some wicked shit that's tweeking you into the early hours of the next morning. When I wanna chill it's always opiates. No matter what form I can get them in there the way to go...

I have to agree with most people in that I find it really hard to sleep with i'm high on them.
If I want to sleep then benzos are great.I do like benzos for fun, but i think they actually make me a little crazy, my personality is altered in a way that i dont really like so I should probably just be alone while i'm on them. Also I get severe memory loss from benzos.
