Opiate Addiction Stupid Questions... (But SWIM really needs advice).

So, this is John's issue.

John has been using either codeine or hydrocodone about once every 5-10 days (averaging once a week) for a few months. Each time John will do 60mg codeine or 7.5-10mg hydrocodone and realizes that this isn't a large dose in any way. John only does it ONCE in that day and waits another 5-10 days before doing the same thing again.

John is concerned about addiction though. John is definitely psychologically addicted but has good self control and never increases the dosage, even though it sounds nice.

John is able to completely forget about opiates when John doesn't have them, but so long as they are around (about 5 more codeine doses and 2 more hydrocodone doses are left now), it's difficult to not do them.

THE QUESTION: Is John going to experience physical withdrawals when stopping this habit when those pills run out? AND, can John do them any closer together without getting addicted?

Any thoughts are appreciated. And even though this IS a drug forum, please, no I-told-you-sos or other moralistic high on your fucking horse bullshit.

I very much doubt you'll go through WD if your only doing it every 5-10 days. Nothing to worry about, but if your addicted mentally then you'll become addicted physically soon enough.

Better to nip this shit in the bud, mate.

Read the forum guidelines and it will advise you that the term 'swim' is not accepted at BL...

That being said you are not going to experience physical withdrawals from that low of a dose in that time frame. However you may be more psychologically addicted than you think and may try to score more after your supply runs out.
I had almost the same scenario and ended up being a full blown oxy addict.

Best of luck to you buddy,

You're in dangerous territory here man. Doubt you'll get any physical withdrawals, but I also doubt you're not gonna go buy more soon enough. You may think you have a handle on this situation, but soon enough you may not. Just found out one of my closest friends has been pissing away a lot of money on a well-hidden opiate addiction that led him to a very bad place. Good luck and I hope you can find the strength to keep your wits about where this could be heading.

Hey guys. Thanks all for the SWIM notices. Didn't know so revised that.

Also, John can't buy more. There is no way this can happen (at least right now). He doesn't know where to get them. The only reason he has them is he had a prescription and didn't really need them for that so he decides to indulge here and there. Also, it should be mentioned that he has a ton of Darvocets and has had them for months and never uses them because they suck, even when there was nothing better. Does this speak to his mental control over the issue?

The other main concern is this: John originally felt this way about cigarettes, but now (after quitting after smoking 5 years) even not as a smoker, thinks about cigarettes ALL the time, but this could be because they are so available. Who knows?

Obviously you're not going to be physically addicted at your current pace, but the fact that you're concerned about addiction and even posting about it means you're thinking about opiates more than you may be admitting too.

Anyway, I started out like you and took about ten years for me to get a real opiate habit, your story is so typical it's practically cliche'. The only variation is time in most cases, some people will try vicodin, love it and devote their life to it within months. Usually it's more gradual though.

Basically I think if you don't stop you'll end up with a habit eventually but I can only speculate. Like I said before if you keep on going as you are it's only a matter of time until you find a more steady source, once that happens you'll be hooked unless you have an iron will.

I was only able to locate opiates sporadically for about seven years, then I found a steady source and eventually tried Heroin and got a habit and I'm now on subs. My story is very typical, opiates will own you without you even realizing it. Be careful. Because once they get you it's a lifetime battle to stay away from them.

And by the way, you don't even have to hit bottom to be ruined by opiates, you can have a job, family and what looks like a normal happy life but be absolutely ruled by opiates, spending unfathomable amounts of money just to keep from being sick, it's truly hell by this point. The only way you can avoid this is to stop using them completely. You may be the exception to the rule but I doubt it. Watch yourself, it's a slippery slope.
