Obama signs one-year extension of Patriot Act

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama has signed a one-year extension of several provisions in the nation's main counterterrorism law, the Patriot Act.

Provisions in the measure would have expired on Sunday without Obama's signature Saturday.

The act, which was adopted in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, expands the government's ability to monitor Americans in the name of national security.

Three sections of the Patriot Act that stay in force will:

_Authorize court-approved roving wiretaps that permit surveillance on multiple phones.

_Allow court-approved seizure of records and property in anti-terrorism operations.

_Permit surveillance against a so-called lone wolf, a non-U.S. citizen engaged in terrorism who may not be part of a recognized terrorist group.

Obama's signature comes after the House voted 315 to 97 Thursday to extend the measure.

The Senate also approved the measure, with privacy protections cast aside when Senate Democrats lacked the necessary 60-vote supermajority to pass them. Thrown away were restrictions and greater scrutiny on the government's authority to spy on Americans and seize their records.

yea no shit. i voted for him... not that it matters... but because he said he was going to "keep wall street seperate from main street"(subsequently bailing out the banks 4 months later), said he was going to pull out of the middle east in 6 months, looks like we're going to be in iraq ANOTHER 18 months on top of the 8 months past the original 6, spoke against NAFTA but later admitted to canada it was "campaign rhetoric". The list of broken promises runs DEEP! I kinda knew he was going to be a crook the way the corporate media was behind him, even having a movement by RUSH LIMBAUGH to have his supporters vote for obama in the primary and mccain in the general election. I forgot what the movement was called. I never really believed in obama, I wanted to vote for ron paul but I was 2 months shy of voting age when the primaries came around, and I just voted in the general election for the fuck of it honestly. I kinda knew it didnt 'really matter though.

This is unfortunate. For the most part I have been happy with Obama and feel like he is doing a much better job than any of the other candidates would have

Crying wolf works sometimes only because there really are wolves.

In this case, the issue isn't whether there is a a threat, but whether the measures taken are worth whatever they accomplish in reducing that threat.

The sections I see referenced in the original article are pretty uncontroversial, imho.

Roving wiretaps simply enables a warrant to stay with the person targeted, rather than a particular phone. In a time of multiple prepaid cell-phones, this is just common sense. It doesn't weaken the threshold for obtaining a warrant in the first place.

Court-approved seizure of records and property in anti-terrorism investigations: key word is court-approved.

"Lone wolf" terrorist simply recognizes that an individual need not be part of a terrorist organization to be planning, and intent on executing, terrorist acts. Example of such an act: the anthrax mailings.
 
Terrorists can go fuck themselves with a knife. I hope they all die in a fire. That being said, the majority patriot act uses have come in domestic drug cases.....

I don't think those three provisions are bad at all....in terms of combating true terrorists.

btw, we all need to look in a mirror when we talk about causing terror to others.

Less than 1% of all information gathered under the patriot act has anything to do with terrorism. Evidence gathered against drug dealers outnumbers evidence gathered against terrorists exponentially.

Its a front and was initially put into place during a time of fear and vulnerability.

So, because less than 1% of what is mined in the name of gold, isnt gold, we shouldnt mine for gold.

And because less than 1% of people are murderers, we shouldnt bother looking for them, or even making murder laws.

And because less than 1% of the world has HIV, we shouldnt bother looking for a cure.

IT ONLY TAKES 1 PERSON, LET ALONE 1% OF PEOPLE, TO KILL MANY MILLIONS.

If in that 'less than 1%' of people is a terrorist who was going to release anthrax all over a heavily populated area, and he is foiled because of this act existing, im pretty sure YOU arent going to be complaining, are you.

The process of finding and catching terrorists, criminals, gold, anything.. means that youve gotta look through people that arent terrorists. Of course we'd all love it if that wasnt the case, but terrorists arent walking aruond with 'im a terrorist' picket signs in there hand, now are they.

Thats not even mentioning, the fact that neither you or i know how many % of the information gathered has anything to do with terrorism, they wouldnt release that information, and no doubt you got it out of some conspiracy magazine.
