President Obama granted clemency to a record 214 inmates on Wednesday, far surpassing his previous single-day record, as part of an ongoing effort to release federal inmates serving prison terms deemed to be unduly harsh.

To date, Obama has commuted the sentences of 562 federal inmates, more than the previous nine presidents combined. The White House said in a statement that the president will continue commuting the sentences of inmates through his remaining months in office.

“Today began like any other for 214 federal inmates across the country, but ultimately became a day I am confident they will never forget,” said Neil Eggleston, the White House counsel. The 214 inmates freed represent the most commutations in a single day since at least 1900, Eggleston said.

Typically, Obama has granted clemency to 40 or 50 inmates a month. In this case, 67 of the 214 inmates had been sentenced to life in prison. Almost all of those released from their sentences on Wednesday had been convicted of nonviolent drug crimes, according to the White House.

made pounds of lsd. stay for life. I know Pickering was big time.....but there is no way in fuck that his lsd caused as much damage to society as crack cocaine
 
Good stuff! Imagine how much brighter they will all so will their families and friends etc.

Reading some of those crimes and the sentences is so depressing and distressing. It's so wrong to jail someone for life for drugs imo. Life should be for mass murderers, serial rapists and pedos etc dont you think?
 
In the states we jail the most people worldwide. Commuting sentences is all well and good and should be done, but actually changing the draconian laws that put non violent citizens away for a very long time, and then cause them to not be able to vote or get sustainable work would be much better.
 
Good deal, we let out our nonviolent offenders to make room for more of them. Until the drug war ends there will always be prisons built, sentence commuted, so there is plenty of room to incarcerate more non violent drug offenders and dealers.
