EDIT: THE STUDY IS NO LONGER RECRUITING - THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST

Kia ora koutou!

Thanks for your interest in this study. See the study information below, and please don't hesitate to contact the researchers if you have any questions. Survey link is at the bottom of the post.

What is the Aim of the Project?

The aims of the research project are to describe MDMA/Ecstasy use behaviour in NZ, including use motivation, subjective experiences, harm reduction practices and other drug use. We also aim to link this information with individual factors, including but not limited to personality, mental health, risk taking behaviour, and quality of life. This project is being undertaken as part of the requirements for Jai Whelan’s Doctor of Philosophy degree.

What Type of Participants are being sought?

We are seeking participants who are aged 18 years or older and speak English, who have previously consumed what you presumed to be MDMA/Ecstasy within NZ and have lived in NZ for at least 1 year.

We are aiming to recruit at least 300 participants. To recognize the actual or reasonable costs involved with participating in this project, all participants who complete the survey will be put into the draw to win 1 of 20, $100 vouchers (if you are participating for University of Otago psychology credits, you will not be entered into this draw). Participation in this research will contribute to a larger body of work that looks to reduce stigma and drug harm generally within Aotearoa.

What will Participants be Asked to Do?

Should you agree to take part in this project, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey. The survey should take approximately 30-40 minutes to complete. If you need to stop before you have completed the survey, you can do so and come back to complete the survey at another time.

Please be aware that you may decide not to take part in the project without any disadvantage to yourself of any kind.

What Data or Information will be Collected and What Use will be Made of it?

We will collect demographic information (e.g. age, sex, education level, etc.) and data pertaining to your drug use behaviours and personal characteristics. An email address will be collected for the purposes of contacting winners of the voucher draw only. This email will not be linked to any survey responses.

The data collected will be securely stored in such a way that only those mentioned below will be able to gain access to it. Data obtained as a result of the research will be retained for at least 5 years in secure storage. The results of the project may be published and will be available in the University of Otago Library (Dunedin, New Zealand) but every attempt will be made to ensure that you will not be identified.

The response options in this survey are in no way indicative of use that is considered safe. The researchers advise that you read the best harm reduction information available for guidance on how to be safe when deciding to use MDMA (or other drugs), after completing this survey.

In the event that questions make you feel hesitant or uncomfortable you are reminded of your right to withdraw from the project at any stage without any disadvantage to yourself of any kind.

Can Participants Change their Mind and Withdraw from the Project?

Once started, you can withdraw from the survey at any stage, but please note the data you have entered up until that point will be saved and used.

What if Participants have any Questions?

If you have any questions about our project, either now or in the future, please feel free to contact either:-
