The following article has appeared on the 'in-the-mix' dance music news website:
quote:
After the unfortunate incidents of last weekend @ Happy Valley, there has been some talk of an increased Police presence at dance events for the coming future - and in particular, this weekend.
Some promoters of events for this weekend have been contacted by Police and advised that their events may be visited by plain clothes and uniformed officers. Promoters have been asked to assist Police by taking all possible steps to ensure their events are drug-free. Don't be suprised if you're asked "Do you have any illegal substances" by the friendly door staff over the next couple of weeks.
There has been some talk in the media of legislating responsibility for illegal drug-use in clubs to the promotors of events. With this thought currently being thrown around, it is easy to see a situation where a number of events may finish prematurely due to Police involvement.
For those who can remember the Anna Wood incident, we've seen this type of over-reaction before. Though with the number of incidents lately (Underground, huge ecstasy hauls) ITM thinks "you ain't seen nothin' yet"

Be a bit more careful over the next couple of weeks (especially with Mardi Gras weekend coming up). Don't just pull those baggies out in the middle of the club like a lot of us do now. And don't take too long snorting those lines of speed in the loos either

True, true, but it's also important to rememeber that cops are just normal people trying to do their jobs. And in the case of drug law enforcement, their job must be hugely unsatisfying. No matter what measures they enforce, the problem will not and does not go away. And because of this, your average cop would have to be pretty naive to think he can make a real difference. They might give it their best shot for a while, but the rewards must be so few that only the most dedicated could keep it up for too long.
So when these tragedies (god I HATE that overused word, it's almost as bad as "hero") happen, they tend to um and ah about it for a few weeks, promise that "taskforces" will be created, "new strategies" implemented, "tougher crackdowns" enforced etc etc etc.
But basically it's just a token effort. We know it, and they defintely know it.
So these next few weeks will certainly be a time to exercise maximum caution. The cops will be hunting for scalps and scapegoats. But rest assured that once the media outrage has died down, things will return to normal.

I myself am having a huge weekend and I am glad that you reminded me to watch out for shit like that. I usually get so excited I am like a little kid just wanting to play with a new toy :P
I had forgotten about the police presence that there will be.

Well I can confidently say that 99% of ecstasy related overdoses and illness are due to irresponsible use. There are those who have a "one more is better than one less" attitude. Not only are you fooling with your own life, but you are dragging the reputation of sensible party-goers(some of whom don't use illicits) down the drain. Call me insensitive, but some people deserve all they have coming for them.
Contrary to many people's opinions........we aren't invincible, and the rave community needs no more proof of this.

good call antipodes.
i cannot get over the people who week after week buy ANY sort of pill, from ANYONE in a club, and then drop it without once considering that they have no idea the possible contents of the pill.
why waste ur money and importantly ur life, and with better education hopefully more pillers will begin to realise real MDMA is not a once a week thing, and in the case of some, a 3 day long event.
it is amazing the number of people out there that have no idea what the drug is, how it is different/similar to other drugs and what it is doing to their brain etc etc.

Well I must be in a non-hardcore crowd, because 95% of the poeple I know are fairly responsible, I don't think there are that many people who are really abusing it. All though saying that I have noticed that as people take ecstasy for longer they become desensitized with time and slip into slightly less responsible habits, we need to remind ourselves from time to time it is a privilege we shouldn't abuse. I know I fall into that category a bit.

auswaverider : I TOTALLY agree with your ideas on desentsitising. I somethimes think that we (meaning the people I go out and take pills with) tend to become slightly blase about the whole pill taking thing. I mean, even though we all know what we're taking (well sort of anyway) and we claim to research heaps on the drugs that we do, I KNOW our judgement gets a bit skewed after we've had a few too many.
We all claim to be such responsible drug users, but are we really? Or do we just know how far we ca push our minds and our bodies before it goes too far?
I'm just a bit weary of it all as of late I guess. I'm dsappointed in how enthusiastic I become if I meet someone at uni who likes talking about pills as much as I do. I'm disappointed in how much I miss taking pills when I have a (break) and most of all.... I'm disapointed in how ROUTINE this has all become.
This is the reason why I took my FIRST break from durgs... it became routine. I think it's almost time for another.
Anyway, saying all that. I'm having a semi-big one this weekend. EVERYONE!!!! Be careful, we saw guys getting searched at PALLADIUM last week, and this week is sure to be another 'TARGET BUST WEEK' for cops around Sydney. Be sensible with your drugs, AND don't flaunt the use of them (especially in big clubs like home).
CHEERS,
mona.

Firstly, the Anna Wood incident was a media feeding frenzy. I knew Anna personally and watched the media jump on the school and dance scene as if they were to blame. Nobody is to blame in these circumstances. Since Annas death, there have been further drug related deaths (Sublime, Happy Valley). However I feel that on the east coast of Oz, drug related deaths have been no more that you are able to count on one hand.
When comparing these stats with that of gambling related suicides, alcohol related abuse etc, the drug scene rates quite meekly.
I for one am an individual who firmly believes in the legalisation of currently illegal substances in the not so distant future.
A recent report on national expenditure on Marijuana for personal use saw pushes for legalisation for one reason and one reason only. So that our Government can slap a tax on it.
Once the tripe has been filtered from the drug scene, XTC will be the next to passed across the counter at your tobacconist or pharmacist.
What people have to realise is that drugs are not immune to the thumb rule when buying any product out there. Shop around and when you find a good thing, stick to it. Legalisation of XTC will also promote standardisation of the drug which will ensure it's consistency. A green mitsi will give the same effect each and every time.
Legislation will crush the black market as mass production will bring pricing right down (however taxes will offset any price reduction).
Your backyard manufacturers using stolen tableting machines will be run out of business and the problem we face today will be eradicated.
It's a simple solution with a lot of loopholes that must be tied prior to taking each step.
The reason for the crackdown on drugs at this point is this. Drugs and Death are two topics focused upon by the media and public fury is driven by the media. Who answers to the public? The Government, and what is their prime function? Giving the voters everything they want.
Whether we like it or not, the scene is here and it's not about to disappear, so rather than trying to kill it, a task to big for any man and his army, lets try to control it and add legislation into the mix. Less deaths and dilemmas, better times and better drugs for everybody!

I have to ask...
I wasnt really into pills when Anna died, and I have done my research and such on the case but why was it such a big deal? It just strikes me as being a little over the top: girl takes E, dies from water overdose (I know its more complicated, but more or less) could anyone shed some light on the topic?!?!?

i think the fact that she was so young had a bit to do with it... plus not much was known about ecstasy at that time by the general public, so the media jumped onto that idea...
plus that picture of her looks so innocent..
with her school uniform on and stuff... thats what i think.
but i dont really know...

On the subject of being careful around sydney - I just got back from some road testing in Oxford St, and there were quite a lot of blues around. We were sitting in the lizzard lounge at about 10PM and 2 walked in, had a walk around and chatted to the barstaff for a few minutes. First time I've seen uniforms in an Oxford St club (usually always a few undercover d's). They didn't seem to interested in bothering anyone, but they are still around.
Stupid thing is there were only about 20 in the lounge at that time, and this idiot was cruising from table to table trying to sells pills and acid, bloody 50 bucks for something called pink eyes, and 20 bucks for acid - no thanks...
I'm getting kinda nervous about carying large amounts around on Sat night/Sun morning, we have a whole crew up from Melbourne for the weekend...shit.
hux.

Orange Juice - good, good, good call. I guess people will one day realise that while legalisation will not SOLVE all drug-related problems, it will solve a hell of a lot of them. Peeps seem to think that if it's legalised, it will be totally unrestricted, that every 5 year old and his granny will start scarfing them by the handful, and the entire world will be dead within a week.
It's good to see people thinking a little between the lines, rather than firmly, steadfastly, unmovingly WITHIN the square.
Cheers

The goverment drain the people us every day of our lives they are not really trying to help us, just control us take our money in taxes ,gambling, fines, rates, fees and who knows what else and use it against us to take away more of our feedom they like to keep drugs illegal not to protect us but so they can point the finger and say theres the bad guy! you need protection from him ...really people that take e are not violent in any way not like i have seen with alchahol at some local clubs. Heard the other day on the radio that more than 40 000 australians die each year from smoking tabacco products how many e related deaths a year? I find this very unconsitent to if they "The Authorities" really want to save lives what the hell are they doing NOT banning tobaco products they are do gooders all corupt working in hand with the media frightening the public into thinking we need there help or protection and we dont..
what right do they have to tell us what we can do with OUR OWN bodies they are OURS arnt they. If i pop a pill who am i hurting if anyone? Thats it only myself an why am i not aloud to do that?
We are all slaves to the authorities they get there power from us they are parisites they live off others.
No one or no government has the right to force or threaten force against any individual who is not hurting the individual or property rights of others. Individuals have the basic right to do anything with their lives they choose, including damaging themselves by using alcohol and drugs, just as they have the right to damage themselves with sugar, tobacco and suicide...so long as they do not hurt, make threats, force, or fraud against any other individual. Moreover, those who use or condone such force dont really have honest or innocent intentions, no matter what they appear. And in using force to prohibit drugs, the enforcers are not only morally wrong, but their policies of force drive drug prices far above their free-market values. Those artificially high prices, in turn, allow organized crime to flourish through the extremely high-profit margins guaranteed by the government enforcers.

call me stupid call me naive (sp?) but i dont think legalistaion is the answer......decriminalisation and education(public/media/medical and most importantly user) maybe as this would leave us to not be worried about carrying a personal qty, but i dont know if i would like a substance as powerful as mdma out for all and sundry to use. how many peeps do we all know that have done the major stop. drop off the face of the earth for a while while they rebuild their brain , and self-confidence. how many times have we all been mid converstaion wondering what the fuck we were rambling on about. do not think i do not believe that mdma is good for people to find out more about themselves and it enables the ties that hold us back normally or pre-pill taking to be removed , but i think if everybody could try it we could see some of the things we take for granted becoming a social problem for the dance community / pill scence as a whole.......
yes i do realise that this would require more people to start taking the drug , but at present the scare tactics for usage and harsh penalties for carrying are keeping some people away.
enable testing for free with a publication of results.
enable users to carry their own substances , but a total legalisation could ruin what is at present a failrly good arrangement.
educate the media as to what it is that we all enjoy doing.
90% of users (blatant guess) seem safe and responsible and they (the media) would have the public believe that we all take drugs and do whatever till we either pass out or end up in hospital.
