Nintendo Wii

^23

When I have more time I will respond appropriately. Your opinions are very well stated and very valid. I think it all comes down to what we like as individuals. The reason the Wii is there, is to fill a spot in the market. There is definately a demand for that product, and there are many people who thoroughly enjoy the titles nintendo offers. Have a great night man. Happy independance day.

srsly, big games like Black, or Halo, or GTA are pretty much the video game equivalent of Jerry Bruckhimer movies. They're massive mining operations targeted to extract the greatest amount of money from the greatest number of people.

I don't want to see sprawling, expertly produced games go away, but I love having the opportunity to play games that take risks, like trauma center, warioware, or feel the magic.

I absolutly disagree. In fact, being the movie snob that I am, I take offense at that comparison. Jerry Brukheimer is the worst thing to happen to film in decades. He makes mindless, unoriginal eyecandy based crap. The games you mentioned in particular were very solid in gameplay, story and graphics. There is a small number of games that are that good, and an even smaller number of them were on any of the recent Nintendo platforms. Sure, Nintendo has those gems that are among the best titles in gaming, but they released even more crap that really was similar to a Brukheimer piece of fluff.

Besides, you say games like Black, Halo and GTA are massive mining operations, then you go on to say that you don't want sprawling, expertly produced games to go away... so which is it? I'd agree with the latter, with a disclaimer that Nintendo rarely ever manages to pull off all those qualities in a single game as producers for the other platforms do.

The bottom line is that all the platforms have to depend on the same basic principles for entertaining games. Some qualities take higher precidence than others... yet they are also interchangable. If a game has lousy graphics but an entertaining story and decent gameplay (as most of Nintendo's best games do) it can still be just as much fun to play as a game with great graphics, great gameplay but an almost incidental story or plot. The best games have great graphics, enthralling gameplay, clever storylines and tight controls... and most of those games tend to be on Sony or Microsoft.

As for how idiotic the Wii is:

Nintendo caught the same shit 2 years ago when they unveiled the DS. The DS is currently outselling the PSP, the 360, the PS2, the GC. The most popular console at the moment is the one that took a big risk with its interface. It reaped the benefits of a whole bunch of new game play dynamics. I hope the same happens for the Wii. Honestly, I'm getting sick of videogames. Ever since the SNES and Genesis were retired, gameing has gotten more esoteric, nerdy, and boreing every year. I'm tired of learning curves for control schemes, and over-produced, one size fits all FPSes.

I don't remember Nintendo catching ANY flack for the DS. In fact, I remember quite a lot of excitment before it's release. The concept behind the DS was to offer a whole new style of gameplay, as is the Wii's concept. It's the execution of those concepts that makes them different. A stylus and touchpad may sound limiting in their capabilities, but they really did offer a whole new level of interactivity with a great amount of ease. The idea of a wireless controller that senses motion etc sounds like it should offer even more depth of play, but if you dislike lerning curves for control scheme on traditional controllers, you are going to freaking hate the Wii controller. Not only will you have to learn button mapping, you'll also have to get good with it's motion control. And if you think the FPS genre has become boring and over-produced, you really need to start looking up some different games. Read the industry magazines, go hang out at the local game store and ask the geeky kid behind the counter to recomend one of the lesser-known titles that deserves more attention. Hell, I could even give you a list of games that would keep you busy for weeks... maybe even months... that would hopefully restore your faith in other platforms, genres.

i never understood why people that seem to think exercise is anathema want to swing a controller through the air to simulate playing tennis or swordfighting* or whatever on a game console. at that point, just do it ffs.

just me, though!

:)

*yeah, you don't get to chop someone of at the knees, but take a freakin' swordfighting class. gah!

Halo > all

You're kidding right?

I mean, even if you aren't a PC gamer, there are many first person shooters on consoles that blow Halo out of the water. Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Black, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark... Then get into PC gaming territory... the Half-Life series, Doom series, Quake series, SWAT 4, Far Cry, F.E.A.R., System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Prey, Battlefield series, just to name a few...

Anyway, with my PC elitism out of the way.

I can't wait for the Wii. I've owned most Nintendo consoles and I will be first in line for this. I played it for a bit at E3, and it really adds a whole new dimension to the games. I got to play the golf and the tennis game, and I watched someone play the Zelda demo, and they were all running excellent, they looked great, and the sensor is very accurate.

Can't wait!

^all completely different than the freehand controller. The power glove was 3rd party. The zapper was great, I love light gun games. SER.

^Don't forget Metroid!!

Metroid Prime was one of the last games I actually bothered to finish.
"Metroid Prime" was the best game of 2002.
The story, the music, the gameplay, EVERYTHING about was perfect.
It was the reason I bought a Gamecube.

It's too bad so many PS2 fan boys and morons that wallow in pointless violence had their dicks wrapped around "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" in 2002.
Otherwise, "Metroid Prime" would have received the recognition it deserved.

I'm definitely getting a Wii. Mainly for "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess."

I never picked that one up. In fact, I haven't finished a video game since Prime. Worth buying used?

"Echoes" is definitely fun.
if you're a "Prime" fan, you'll like "Echoes."

but it hasn't grabbed ahold of me like "Prime" did.
that's probably because I got "Echoes" only a week before i got "World of Warcrack."

needless to say, "Warcrack" took over my interests.

Buy Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem second hand. It's probably my favourite cube game. I've finished it 4 times. And there is only 3 different endings - it's just fun to play.

I'm playing metroid prime hunters on the ds lite right now. Yesterday I was scouting around for an unsecured wireless network and found one right across the street. I played a round online under a tree in somebody's front yard. Yay DS!

You've got a somewhat skewed idea of what a console maker is responsible for on the software side. Most of the games you listed were made by Namco, Capcom, or Square. Sony had absolutely nothing to do with those titles, other than (these days) strong-arming developers into exclusive contracts.

Now, you listen to me here. Did you really think I was completely under the impression that Nintendo is solely responsible for the games that are released on it's console? I know that there are software developers such as Capcom, square/EA, Tecmo, Midway, etc... but I wasn't going to get into the technical details about producers and such. After-all Nintendo, or any other console has the right to test, review and market these games before they are put out onto the market. And, all I was trying to say is that Nintendo, in the past, haven't really been aiming for games that are targetted towards the best-selling audience. Not these days, anyways. Habing said that, I love their unique games. But, that just doesn't seem to be what the majority of the gamer's of these days are into.

GTA, blood guts and gore seems to be a best-seller these days.

Ohh and by the way, I am deeply disappointed in the path the new metroid games have gone down. I think it was fucking awesome when it was a side-scroll, platformish, shoot-em-up.

i'm only buying the new nintendo from this next gen of systems. i love their core titles (marios, zeldas, smash bros., etc.) and they always get the basic franchises that i play like madden, EA, major league baseball, etc. the only thing i will really feel missed out on is the metal gear solid series.

but, the gamecube was/is a great system with mario baseball and soccer, smash brothers, zelda: windwaker, and metroid titles that were completely dope. add that to the fact that the system is dirt cheap and you've got a winner.

the wii will have zelda: twilight princess at launch along with wii sports which will keep me busy until mario galaxy comes out. its also going to be priced $200 - $250 as opposed to ~$400 for xbox 360 or ~$600 for ps3.

oh and to add a little extra thought... if/when the new super mario kart comes out it will be the ultimate. that game is SOOOO fun to play with three other friends... if they make it internet compatible for big 16 player races it could be the greatest game of all time.

^there are still 2d metroid games for the game boy advance, at least 2; Nintendo did not abandon the 2d metroid universe, they are exploring both directions.

So 2d metroid games are still being made. Buy them and stop whining. AHAHAH jk.
