Japan's Nintendo Co Ltd on Tuesday took the wraps off a new version of its DS handheld device that can play games and show movies in 3D without glasses, in an effort to revitalize demand.

The device, introduced at the E3 video game conference in Los Angeles, comes with two screens -- one a touch screen -- and three built-in cameras that enable the machine to snap digital photos in 3D.

The company did not say when sales would begin, or give a retail price. It had previously suggested such a device would go on sale by March 2011.

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime sought to refute the perception that sales of the Wii console are softening, and that the Wii -- which pioneered motion-sensing gaming via an all-purpose controller -- has lost its luster as rival platforms gain momentum.

Finally. I'm sure the first couple of editions without the glasses will not look great. But it's a step in the right direction. 3D games and television will not mainstream until they cut the need for glasses out completely.

personally I think it's just too gimicky. It will sell well as it's Nintendo but I can't see the 3D itself playing a part.

I disagree with the 3d not playing a part, it may be gimmicky but none thing nintendo are great at is incorporating these gimmicks into games. I think it's got every chance of being really quite good, the DS was an amazing piece of kit.

Not really into these things but when I found out starfox64 was being made in 3D I almost came!

Skippy, watch out! Do a barrell roll!

At any rate, I'm sure it will be more successful than Virtual Boy. Anyone remember this garbage?

What were they thinking?

I remember when Nintendo used to be all about the games. It's been downhill since the N64.

i disagree, nintendo has always been about innovation. theyve been trying to move away from the standard controller forever. they had a robot that carried spinning tops at the very beginning, the power glove very early on and then the wii (much more successful than the first two examples). im glad theyre doing a 3d device that doesnt require glasses, because once oone of them gets out there, everyone else will have to live up to that standard and release their own glasses free 3d whatever. ive been waiting for the 3d/hologram tv thing since i was a kid and its about damn time.

Skippy was an SOB in Starfox64. I had to pause the game and jerk off when I was on the desert planet of Titania. Skippy almost got owned but Fox saved him in the end.

Just tell them it's a calculator, or better yet glue pages inside the DS so it looks like a book.

I hate all these touch screens and motion controllers, what the fuck is wrong with using a joypad?
