Trigger Warning Night of LSD tripping went horribly wrong

Hello Bluelighters, hope everyone is happy and healthy this new year! I have a bit of a question. It was a regular Friday night and spouse decided he wanted to drop some LSD. We had bought this LSD on many occasions. Now keep in mind, it was just him dropping. I took a xanax and was about to go to bed. He was acting normal for the first half hour or and then something snapped. He pulled me out of bed on to the floor and started smashing my head on the ground, over and over. I screamed for him to stop but I swear it wasn't him. His eyes were completely black and there was no soul. This went on for about 5-10 min while I was screaming for my son to call the cops. The cops got here, pulled him off of me, (there were about 6 units- sp 12 cops in my house. They tasted him twice, did nothing. So they basically doggy piled him and arrested him. This happened months ago now, we've already taken care of the legal side of things but what would cause something like this to happen? Shit gives me nightmares, still. Note we've been together for 14 years. Very much in love. Anmy advice? Or insight into what could have happened? He dropped at least 20x prior to this and has even done DMT.

after blackout level doses (excessively large doses - which could accidentally occur on blotter but not commonly) a sleep walking stage can occur
some people have sleep driving experiences and there are reported instances of sleep sex occurring as well.

sleep walking can occur without psychedelics, during dreamless NREM sleep. during NREM there is hardly any alpha or theta rhythm brain waves, which means there is no new memory formation and no awareness of events - unlike REM sleep which has theta rhythm and we can be aware of dream contents and they go into memory.

your guy had a rare NREM event occur. this is not often repeated. if he doses again he should dose after testing the material and keep the dose modest.

Hello @Internecion, welcome to Bluelight.
I'm terribly sorry to hear about the incident.
From what you have said, nothing that could be of help to you comes to mind, but perhaps you could give us some more information?

Does your husband or anyone in his family have any history of mental illness, do you know how much LSD he took, does he take or did he take other recreational or psychiatric drugs, was he sleep deprived, did he have any memory of the incident, did he keep being hostile for the whole trip, how did he snap out of it?
I understand some of this this can be painful to think about and put into words, so I am sorry for any discomfort I may cause by asking, but I feel you may get more insight if you can answer.

Definitely going to look into this more, thanks for the information. Is it common for them to get violent during these episodes though?

I do know his mother has schizophrenia, but other then that no mental illness in the family. He wasn't on any other drugs and dropped 6 tabs

I'm very sorry to hear about what happened with you, in my experience LSD often makes people less violent than normal but these blackout states are quite wild. I've used LSD probably hundreds of times at this point, often in enormous amounts, and have only blacked out like this a single time when consuming ~600 standard doses at once by drinking a full vial of liquid LSD at once. My memory shut off for ~4 hours, I was apparently tearing my clothes off, saying shit like "If I could cum PCP, would you suck it out of me?" to my now fiancee (at the time boyfriend), but I wasn't being violent at all, just mad cryptic.

It's funny too because there's a ton of violence in my past and I'm kind of notorious for being a fucking menace with it, I guess it just reflected my set and setting maybe? I've also never had a bad trip or any sort of fear/anxiety while tripping in my entire life, which may have contributed to the peaceful state I was in during that experience. Definitely try therapy for getting over this trauma, and in the future keep a taser handy if he's tripping on a high dose of anything, or have him mix benzos with it, they're often referred to as tripkillers but they aren't, they just make the trip more calm. When I've been around people who are tripping and acting a fool I've usually been able to get them to take benzos, and worst case they didn't want heat when I'd offer to escalate, but you probably don't have the capacity to just beat the shit out of your husband I'm assuming (assuming heteronormativity here, as most people are straight).

If 6 tabs got him like this, it could've been anywhere from the equivalent of 2-3 normal tabs if they're weak, or closer to 50-60 normal tabs if they were insanely highly dosed. Given that the taser didn't work on him, I'm assuming they were some insanely heady tabs though. His past use of DMT means very little here as DMT tends to physically knock people out in a way that LSD doesn't. It may be wise to keep a combat-ready man around when your husband uses LSD in the future just in case he needs to get his ass beaten, frankly.

YES.
since the middle of the 20th century the advice is not to tr to wake sleep walkers as they do become violent.
it appears that the fight or flight center (amygdala) is the only thing operating "normally".

It is clear this person did not have control of his actions. We see that sometimes with extremely drunk people, they all channel the same asshole, drunk spirit. They are no longer captain of their own ship.

And if there is schizophrenia in the family, then it could be like a car with keys in and running, door open some asshole spirit jumps in place. (IMO) If a person is fully present, this type of thing will not happen. But they have to have that control over their mind and body. Full and confident control, and then the ability to be humble.

This person has some redeeming to do so I would not take any more LSD. I would talk about the event and try and make peace with it. Then for a spiritual practice, I would try meditation over LSD. I would not trust this person taking it again.

Saying that I have had a few friends that went off the deep end, processed it, and was still able to take psychedelics in the future in a good way. I’m not sure this is that situation yet.

Thanks for your reply. I get what you're saying. He was there but... wasn't..he couldn't talk. He has absolutely no recollection of the event. He actually came to as soon as they brought him into the police station. Fucked up situation to say the least just glad I'm here to tell the story. Would you say 🍄 s are off the table for him then too?

Oh he definitely hasn't. And has no plans to. We really did enjoy our LSD nights though!!

I honestly don't want to re write it all no- offence. All the information you're looking for I've replied to in other comments - cheers mate.

Proper set and setting? lol Actually if that is needed then abort trip. (also I am staying away from your refrigerator Esper!)

I did have two friend lose the plot. In a peaceful way though. And they did go on to trip successfully again. In a situation like this I would talk about it and integrate it. Like why the lack of control. Obviously the poor guy did not want to do that. Talking can bring people closer. But there is for sure redeeming to do.

It has been said in the past that no matter how high on LSD or mushrooms a person is they should be able to state their zip code if asked. That would be a person fully present. (I understand with things like DMT and Salvia that does not apply)

there's definitely some loose nuts in somebody's head if they start bashing somebody else's head that they supposedly love while on acid

you can blame the LSD all you want but "real good acid" should never do that to somebody

I agree with this, I took a double digit milligram (not microgram) dose of LSD once and the loose nuts in my head were just me asking my fiancee for head (by saying "if I could cum PCP, would you suck it out of me?"), nothing even remotely close to violence, and that's despite living a life that's conditioned me to be the type of person who doesn't hesitate in violent situations.

Proper set and setting is whatever's safe, and if safety involves a couple dudes with tasers or telescoping batons in their pockets chilling on the couch doing bong rips watching TV or whatever, then sure, I'd honestly consider that the safest set and setting. And yeah my old roommates asked me to get a minifridge bc they were sick of accidentally tripping because they would pull things out, not read the clearly written label, consume it, and then end up on LSA, or harmaline, or any of a variety of random drugs I was storing. I also had ~2 gallons of ayahuasca in the fridge which was taking up more space than it needed to.

I do want to mention that tripkillers are oftentimes ineffective with super high doses of things, they'll dull the trip and calm people down but sometimes a trip just has to ride itself out. I've found this to be the case moreso with cannabinoids that people try to drown out with benzos/antipsychotics than with serotonergics, serotonergics seem much more vulnerable to tripkillers.
