Post Cigarette Addiction Exercise

~from my roomate~ I recently quit smoking cigarettes and marijuana. Actually I did "poppers" where you load the bowl of a bong half way with tobacco and half weed. And I smoked cigarettes on the side. Well I quit these habits, and I feel a lot better. Great actually.

Trouble began today when I went for a jog. 2 miles. I finished, came home, showered and got to work at the computer. Then I started coughing like I usully do, but this time I tasted blood. wtf?

Anyone get this after quitting cigarettes?

I sometimes get that after vigorous exercise, but usually RIGHT afterward, and there never is any blood, I just get a slightly metallic taste in my mouth. Did you do this kind of exercise and never get this before? Was there actually any blood?

Never hurts to visit a doc about these kind of things

I used to get a metallic taste in my mouth after cardio aswell when I used to smoke.

Could just be something to do with his sense of taste improving and noticing things he hasn't in a while. When he gets the taste get him to spit in a sink or something just to make sure there isn't actually any blood?

I recently quit smoking and have been getting vigorous cardiovascular exercise every other day since, I still am coughing up a ton of shit, but the chest pains are starting to go away.

It's highly unlikely that there was blood in your sputum; I know that metallic taste (it does taste a lot like blood, though maybe less salty and less coppery), I think it's associated with tiny amounts of particular matter that come up once you recover normal, healthy lung function.

In your case, this might go on for a while. Smoking tobacco using the method you described feels like it gives a thicker smoke with more particulate matter, all of which has to be inhaled much more deeply than with cigarettes.

That's normal. I get that too. Running stresses the lungs, but in the end they will be stronger for it.

Breathing problems from smoking cigs

Last month I started smoking and roughly have about 2-3 a day, but recently I have had some quite bad breathing problems, I have now given up as I guess it does not suit me but it seems to be getting worse. Would it be best if I went to a doctor?

That's great you've given up already, cigarettes can cause more problems than it's worth.
I definitely think you should see a doctor if your breathing problems are getting worse.

I'm going to move this over to the Healthy Living forum.

Good luck! <3

^^ I think you're right dude. The more likely scenario is that the breathing problems were underlying and the cigarettes brought it out.
A trip to the doctor is definitely in order nonetheless.

I feel stupid putting this post up now but I told my mum and she said it might be alergic to something, so I had a Piriton and the problem seems to have gone. I've got two cats but they have been round for ten years so I don't think it is that, it could be a dust alergy or something.

Thanks for the supportive comments. :)

It could be any number of things causing it though man, it's still best to get it checked out as soon as you can.

Smoker's cough and chest tightness/pains *months* after quitting smoking?

Wasn't sure where to put this... (Sorry if it's kind of obvious where it belongs--I am quite out of it today and have been all week... Which, now that I think of it may have something to do with this issue--Could abnormal sleep effect this?):

This past week, I've started having sharp pains near the top of my chest that span the entire width of it. They only last for a few seconds and have only occurred a few times after sitting for an extended period of time and then sitting/standing up quickly.

Today, I feel quite congested, yet when I cough it's a very dry cough--Not unlike I used to get when I smoked. Once earlier, when I coughed, mucus came up and when I spat it into a napkin, it was grey in color--Similar to what I used to get when I smoked.

I quit in March. Here it is, five months later. Is this normal lung-cleaning activity? Should I go see a doctor if it persists?

I did just think of something... I quit smoking pot almost two weeks ago (it'll be two weeks on Sunday). I was smoking a bowl each night for months (since about March).

yeah, cardio workouts, see your doctor, honestly it just sounds like you're body is trying to repair itself and you are receiving that as pain, if you were a chronic smoker before it could very well take months to recover, but whatever you do, DON'T start smoking again, especially if you are planning on staying clean from now on.

Drink water, jog, Vitamins D+E+C, meh, that's my 2cents

After a year of quitting cigs, I could not pass the spirometer test as a required immigration physical. The doc suggested I see a specialist. I was diagnosed with asthma. The working diagnosis was that vs Stage 1 COPD. I'll take asthma.

Thanks all. Unfortunately I can't go see a doctor (don't have a primary care physician atm... Need to get on that). I also can't start running (me? run? Hah!). Push-ups are also out (don't think I can do one).

The pains have died down a bit--No longer daily. And I haven't coughed up anything else... Maybe it has passed? :-/ I'd hate to have gotten COPD (even Stage 1) from smoking just for a couple years...
