Nicotine and depression - looking for evidence?

Sorry for the formatting, line breaks aren't working for some reason. -- I've been reading about nicotine addiction and it's associated with lower levels of MAOA and MAOB. This caught my eye for a couple reasons. -- Firstly, my mother used to be a heavy smoker so I breathed that shit in growing up. -- And secondly, I'm depressed and currently trying to convince my doc to prescribe me an MAOI. They're very hesitant to prescribe those in my country, even the safer ones, but it's the only significant class of AD I haven't tried (TCAs, SSRIs, SNRIs, mirtazapine, reboxetine) and I haven't responded to anything. -- So I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a link between nicotine intake/dependence and depression - particularly early exposure and depression developing later on.

I think the lower levels of MAO in tobacco smokers arent related to nicotine but the harmala alkaloids (e.g. harmane) in the tobacco.
